Materials Needed IPhone

Introduction of the Lesson Katie, I know that you told me that you did have an IPhone and that you dont know how to use one either. You also mentioned that you might ask for one for your birthday. Since IPhones and Ipads are so common, I thought that it would be kind of fun for us to learn how to use voice over on the iPhone! How does that sound? I have my IPhone today- but next week I am going to get a hold of an IPad, so you can review using one of them too! I am going to teach you some of the basic function and features of the IPhone; we will go more in depth at a later date. Since you already know mostly how to use an IPad, I know that youll catch on quick Lets go ahead and get started!

Description

What I will say/ do go ahead and look the phone over, get used to the buttons and screen

1. 1 Hand Katie the IPhone with voiceover activated. Let her explore it. 2. Tell Katie about basic buttons- home button, lock

screen, volume, and silent. Tell her the function and how to find them 3. Quiz Katie on the locations and functions of the buttons briefly. Instruct Katie on taping to read the app and double tapping to open. Show Katie how to scroll to browse apps by sliding finger. If you hear the name of an app and you dont want that one, you can slide your finger to the left and it will read the next app. Keep doing this and it will eventually read all of the phone apps. When you hear the one you are looking for, double tap! Go over each button and key and make sure she is familiar with them.

Have Katie Practice find an app and opening it. (Repeat 3X)

Go ahead and find for me my camera. Now find the dictionary. Now find the texts. Now find Pandora If you want to know the time, you click the top center of the screen and it will tell you the time Go ahead and practice that. Why do you think that you be useful? To find the battery level, you just click the top right of the screen. Why do you think this is important? Use the scrolling to find the weather, double tap to open. And listen to the weather for today. Why would this be important? You can also see some details by double tapping. This will tell you the chance of rain- and how windy and humid it is.

10. Show Katie how to find the weather

11. Have Katie find the weather.

Go ahead and practice. Find the weather for today. Tell me the high and the low and tell me the chance of rain! You are doing so great! The last thing I want to show you is how to send a text message! Find and open text messages. Swipe until you hear compose click on that, and send a text to a Fake contact I created, TSB You need to start by typing a T Find where you think it would be on the keyboard. Remember the keys are set up just like they are on a computer keyboard. If you dont find it- you can always swipe until it says T then double tap. Do this until you have the whole word out. OR you can swipe to see if it popped up in the suggestions. When it does, double tap the name. Okay- now you have selected the person to send a text to. Swipe until you hear that the cursor is in the text field box. This is where you will compose the message. We are going to send this message using speech to text. That means you need to find the key that dictates. It is near the bottom right, try to find it- and if you cant use swipe until you hear it get selected. When it is selected you can go ahead and speak. Speak clearly and when you are done double tap. It will tell you thinking and then the phone will tell you what was inserted. If it was what you intended, go ahead and push send.

12. Have Katie find texts messages and find a person to send a text to.

13. Have Katie Compose a text.

14. Review the phone skills we learned about today.

Go over all of the points that we learned about today. Give Katie a quick verbal quiz if there is enough time.

Practice and Feedback Katie is highly motivated by specific praise, so when she does something right, or learns a concept specific praise will be given. If she needs additional practice with a concept- the instruction will be repeated until she gains the understanding. Additional practice will be presented to Katie as she learns to use and navigate an IPad- which is functionally similar and she has used before. Katie mentioned that she may be getting an IPhone for her birthday, and if she does we will practice using it together. Summary of the Lesson Today we learned some of the basic functions of the IPhone and how to use voiceover to navigate to these functions. This is important because if you are getting one, you should know how to use it! Many different accessibility apps are available on the IPhone and IPad and knowing how to use one and how to navigate it are important skills.

Reflection on Lesson Katie did not quite make her objective on typing- and I think that was because we ran out of time towards the end and that part of the lesson was a bit rushed. Next time we work on IPhones, I am going to focus more heavily on that skill in order to help her become more proficient in it. Overall though, I feel like this lesson was successful in that it helped Katie become comfortable with using a smartphone. If she were to get one, more emphasis would be placed on other skills such as dialing, adding contacts, and using various apps. I think that Katie has gained the beginning level skills that she needs in order to use a smartphone. Additional practice will be given to her by means of an IPad or my IPhone again when there is available time. She has had experience with an IPad before, but she claimed she wasnt sure if she remembered many of the basic functions. I think that by reviewing the same functions she grew a little bit more confident in using Apple devices.
