Math 4 Sundial Project

Name(s)________________________________ Date____________

Follow the directions below and fill out the appropriate information. The Compass app on your phone will help you with the first part of this activity. Look up the latitude for Covington, Georgia. After you have constructed your sundial, follow the steps: 1. Go outside and identify due north. 2. Point the tip of the pencil and due north. 3. Mark where the shadow falls on the face of your sundial. For the ACADEX reading, mark it with an A. For the CLASS reading, mark it with a C. For the HOME READING 1, mark it with a 1. For the HOME READING 2, mark it with a 2. If you have a HOME READING 3, mark it with a 3.
Utilize the Sol: Sun Clock app to determine the best time to take your readings from home. It will also let you know how much daylight you have left so you can know if you can wait until after work or practice. When you do a reading, you must take a picture of you with your sundial. The shadow must be visible on the face of your sundial.

4. Using a protractor, identify the angle of the mark. 5. Divide the angle by 180. 6. Multiply that answer by 12. 7. Add 6. The number in front of you decimal is the hour. Note that this will give military time, so adjust accordingly.

8. Subtract the hour from the answer. You should now have only a decimal. If you dont have a decimal, then you are directly on the hour. 9. Multiply the decimal by 60. This answer is the minutes. 10. Record your results in the appropriate location of the chart.

Write a brief explanation to the following questions. Submit your responses via the appropriate discussion post on My Big Campus app. If you think about it, most of the numbers you multiple or divided by made sense. The horizon is a 180 degree measurement and the Sun cannot exceed that, there are 12 hours in AM and PM, and there are 60 minutes in an hour. But why did we have to add 6? What reason(s) do you think are behind the add 6 step? How accurate was your sundial to the actual time? Was it off by hours or minutes? What circumstances do you think caused the differences? Post your pictures via Twitter using the hashtag #M4Sundial Be sure to tweet the picture as close to the time of your reading as possible. I will use the timestamp of the tweet to determine the accuracy of your reading. If you dont have a Twitter account, you may ask your partner for help or use the MBC app.
