Nicohlas Sirianni a 23-year-old senior psychology major at East Stroudsburg
University, pulls on his gray beanie hat, covering his dark red hair, puckers his lips, and
rolls his eyes up while stating his reasons for being one of the many that enjoy the Apple
iOS 7 update.
I like the aesthetics of it, Sirianni said. The look has completely changed and
it makes the phone more modern for this time period.
Sirianni has owned the iPhone 4s for about two years. He said that he loves the
new update, mainly for how it looks, but declares that there are some attributes he
doesn't like.
The battery life is way worse now, he said. Plus, if youre not really tech
savvy its kind of hard to figure out, especially when it comes to closing out of your
apps.
Sirianni discusses the differences in Androids and iPhones.
A smart phone is a smart phone. he said. No matter the model of phone they
all basically do the same thing.
In recent news, on September 18
th
, 2013, Apple issued its latest update, the iOS
7, which has brought many mixed feelings but mostly positive.
A September 2013 article by Gary Marshall on techrader.com reviewed the iOS
7 update with the features people would love, and the flaws they wouldnt. The article
acknowledged that Android phones had very similar features before the iOS 7 such as,
2

the swipe up menu. That is the quick menu to settings, music, and apps was based off of
Android. But Apple users shouldnt be offended because their phones now have similar
capabilities. The article stated that, iOS 7 will make your device feel brand new all
over again.
Anna Zigmond, a 21-year-old senior athletic training major at SRU, smiles
politely as she sits down in a leather booth in the library and glances at her iPhone.
Ive had the iPhone 4 since June, she said.
Zigmond enthusiastically expresses her dislike for the new update, and all the
flaws that come with it. She tucks a stray brown piece of hair behind her ear and her
brown eyes get bigger while she complains about the update.
The internet is so slow now, she expresses, raising her unpolished finger. I
have to swipe my screen so much now too compared to the iOS 6.
Although Zigmond isnt a fan of the new update, she proclaimed that she will
never own an Android phone, even though she believes their looks are very similar.
Apple is just competing with Droids, she said. Youve got to be as good if
not better than your competitor because you never want to feel threatened.
While some Apple users have gone through the transition of iOS 6 to iOS 7,
others have just been introduced to Apple with the iOS 7.
Erin Kelley, a 24-year-old Administrative Assistant at the weatherization
program for Beaver County sips tea out of her white and green Starbucks cup, stating
that she became an Apple iPhone 4 user in September.
I dropped my Android in a toilet, she said while she chuckles. I guess
iPhones handle water better.

Kelley said it was an easy transition from Android to iPhone after the update,
because a lot of the new features on the iOS 7 were introduced by Droid phones. She
pushes her glasses up her nose and says she believes the iPhone battery life lasts longer
than Androids, and an iPhone is simpler to use.
I just really hate that one button, she exclaims. Droids have 3 buttons. This
one button is just nonsense.
Kelley admits that she would go back to being an Android user.
Androids are more affordable, she said. But if I stay with Apple, Im excited
for what these geniuses have in store in their next update.
Michael Silvestri, a 27-year-old information technology consultant and operator of
computer systems in the National Guard, plays with his dog tags around his neck and
glances over to the vine covered brick wall on the back patio of his South Side apartment.
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S3, the 2012 model, and it still has
comparable hardware specs to the iPhone 5, 5S, and 5C, he states while pulling out his
remote size silver phone out of his cargo shorts. New models like the Samsung GS4
(quad-core 1.2-1.9 GHz) , and the HTC One MAX (quad-core 1.7 GHz) blow the iPhones
hardware away with their upgradeable storage, more RAM, and better cameras.
Silvestri pets his husky puppy, Reese as she sits next to him and while disclaiming
that all battery life depends on usage, but standard usage is in favor of the Android
phones because they arent limited in size, while iPhones have a standard shell with the
same size battery, but could come with larger batteries if the phones were made bigger.
I really like the new Samsung Models, however the Nexus 7 is a google
sponsored phone and does not come with extra apps and software like HTC, Samsung,
4

Motorola, or LG, he said. The Nexus is barebones Android, but is typically up to date
with operating system and security features, so my next phone will either be a new
Samsung or Nexus.
Silvestri admits that the iOS 7 has a similar look to Android, but still holds true to
iOS quirkiness. He explains that there are not many quick-setting features, short cuts
through apps, or total customizations. Android can do a lot more things with a hard click,
having a dedicated menu/settings button, and run multiple apps on a screen at once. iOS
still cant do that.
I think in the early stages of Android, iOS was more stable, but the builds for
Android have drastically improved and are equally stable now to iOS, he said.
