DAYS SIIP AWAY
With DiwaIi, Christmas and New Year behind us,
thinQs tend to dampen somewhat. But come
March, HoIi brinQs in reveIries before there's
aQain a IuII tiII Rakhi. This year Easter too, faIIs on
the Iast day of the month. At GH we have taken a pIedQe
to ceIebrate the occasion - whether a festivaI or a speciaI
day. !f a fuII fedQed ceIebration is not possibIe, do
somethinQ different to mark the day. CeIebrations
postponed don't work, we feeI. So however busy you are,
take time out (even if it be a Iate dinner out) for your
festivaIs and speciaI days. Don't Iet them sIip away! Happy
HoIi and a Joyous Easter.
Catch the moment do not
postpone celebrations

International Womens Day falls on
March 8. There is no Mens Day, though. A
telling statement about the world we live
in, which feels the need to do something
special for women, but the men are fine.
In our country, most people tend to think
its largely the lower classes where
women are discriminated against. The
middleclass man, particularly, is inclined
to be astonished that he should be thought
of as a bully. He lets his wife work; shes
allowed to wear what she pleases (as
long as its decent)! Very few men see or
act on the fact that 8 times out of 10, the
woman whether working outside the
house or not ends up doing more in
actual terms of keeping up a life together.
The other fact is that most times the
women themselves indulge the men in
this attitude. Such is their upbringing
that theyre brainwashed from the
moment they can reason. My niece, 10
years younger, a homemaker married to a
charming, hardworking man, often says
she envies me. She tells me I am lucky
since my husband is so liberal. Her
comments amaze me because, like a
typical much-married urban woman, I
often resent the fact that I do everything.
But soon my nieces reaction acted as
an eye-opener women are conditioned
to expect less. Its vital that women think
more for and about themselves. This does
not mean marriages are to be broken
and treated in a cavalier fashion. Its fine
to ask for some give, once in a while;
firmly. Have a great Womens Day!
Get a friend to evaluate your life, honestly:
Do you need to ask your partner for more give?

To Cood Hea!th
I recently read the article Ode
To Life in your January issue.
Nanditas story is exactly like
mine, and I could not stop
myself from sharing it: I had a
miscarriage post which, all the
vi tami ns and potassi um
drained out of my body and I
was paralysed neck down.
Although I had been positive
and kept telling myself that I
had to get back to normal, I did
have my share of pessimism
and hel pl essness. Thi s
happened in September 2007,
after which the organisation
that I am working with gave me
a break. I rejoined in March 28,
2009 (Ill never forget the
date), soon moved one level up
the professional ladder, and
had my baby boy on May 9,
2011. I am still with the same
organisation it helped me in
my time of need and I am proud
to be associated with it. Though
life is a bit hectic, I manage my
time with the help of my
husband, in-laws, parents,
siblings and aunt in fact each
and every member of my family,
as well as friends, the list always
goes on...
I hope this brings positivity
to every person who feels that
there is less light around. I just
need to say that life is what you
want it to be, and the rest is our
determination to churn out
things, the way we require.
Wishing good health and
happiness to everyone.

FamI!y Matters
Good Housekeeping is a perfect
guide for every family (with
reference to What Not To Say
To Family in your January
2013 issue). The joint family
concept is fast vanishing from
Indian culture. Some members
feel they lose out on their
identity in such a setup.
Although it is challenging, care
must be taken by all, especially
the elders in the family, to avoid
ego clashes and live in amity
with mutual respect and love
between all.

I have a little baby to take care of and Im usually
strapped for time where cooking is concerned. While I
can make regular stuff in a jiffy, even slightly complicated
recipes put me off from the process. A friend

A terrace in touch with nature
All around this quiet green terrace are stones, pebbles, sand, water and other
souvenirs (including a piece of a meteor) from over 100 countries. What
started as a hobby has now become a full-blown obsession for Delhi-based
homeowners Jyothi and Prathap Suthan. While Prathap calls the terrace an
oasis of sorts, for Jyothi, this corner represents Earth in the 5-element design
palette she used to create their home. The ooring used in the veranda is green
stone and they had the existing roof cut-off into half, covering the rest with
breglass at a slanted angle, letting in natural light.

prvnt th visibl signs o aging - not to
mntion nghting oisas. Try UK-baso
nutritionist Anita Bean's youth-boosting plan
The key to eating for eternaI youth seems to be a
Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruit, vegetables and
oily fish. Theres convincing evidence it lowers the
risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and may
protect against some cancers and dementia. Then
there are the beauty benefits. A large Australian
study found those whose diets were rich in fruit,
veggies, nuts, beans, lentils and wholegrain bread had
fewer wrinkles than those who feasted on fatty
and sugary foods.
So which foods have the greatest anti-ageing
power? According to scientists at the US National
Institute on Aging, those with the highest ORAC
(Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score or
antioxidant power are more likely to keep you
looking youthful. Beans, green leafy vegetables, fruit
thats red, orange-yellow or blue-purple, lentils, and
dry fruit rank highest.
Top 10 AntI-ageIng Foods
l
0ranges: Like kiwi
fruit, peppers and
broccoli, oranges are
rich in Vitamin C, which
may protect against ageing
by mopping up damaging
free radicals. A British study
of 4,025 women aged 40-74
found Vitamin C-rich foods
reduced the risk of wrinkles
by 36 percent.
2
Huts: Most of them
are good sources of
selenium, a potent
antioxidant that reduces
signs of ageing. (Brazil nuts
have the highest content
just 2-3 will provide your
daily need.) But if its not
available, you can have any
other nut, mustard seeds or
button mushrooms.
3
SgInach: Green leafy
vegetables such as
spinach, rocket and
watercress have high levels
of l utei n, whi ch hel ps
prevent age-related eye
conditions and may reduce
wrinkles, as well.
4
BIueberrIes: These
have the highest ORAC
score of all, so are good
at preventi ng cel l ul ar
damage. Like strawberries,
raspberries, plums and
blackberries, theyre also
packed with anthocyanins,
whi ch protect agai nst
heart disease and cancer.
(American Garden retails
frozen raspberries and

available at gourmet food
stores such as Natures

health benefits. Remember
to check the package for
sugar content, and avoid
if too high.)
5 ChIckgeas: Beans
and lentils rank high on the
ORAC scale, and may also
help to prevent certain
cancers due to their high
content of phytates and
phytoestrogens. Chana dal
(Bengal gram), hari moong
dal (green gram whole),
rajma (kidney beans) and
masoor dal (black gram) are
some easy sources.
5
Curd: One (150gm)
pot delivers a third of
your daily calcium
need (cheese, milk and
almonds are also good
sources). A healthy calcium
intake (with Vitamin D and
weight-bearing exercise)
can help maintain bone
strength and also prevent
osteoporosis.
7
Temat ee s : The
lycopene in tomatoes
can hel p prevent
wrinkles. Researchers have
found that adding 5tbsp
of tomato paste to your diet
daily boosts skins levels of
pro-collagen (which keeps
skin firm) and improves its
ability to protect against UV
rays by 33 percent.
8
0ats: These contain a
soluble fibre called
betaglucan that mops
up cholesterol precursors
and whisks them out of the
body. Eaten daily, oats can
help lower cholesterol and
prevent blood vessels from
furring up. Theyre also a
source of silicic acid, needed
to make the spongy cells
that lie between the skins
collagen and elastin, and
which help to reduce the
appearance of lines and
wrinkles. Oats and milk is
considered to be one of the
most healthy breakfast
options, which can also help
you lose/maintain weight.
9
0IIy IIsh: Salmon,
sardines as well as
mackerel are stocked
with Omega-3 fatty acids,
which help lower blood
cholesterol and reduce
your chances of a heart
attack or stroke. Fish which
are high in Omega-3 may
also help prevent memory
loss, alleviate inflammatory
conditions such as rheuma-
toid arthritis, as well as
reduce the number of
wrinkles on your skin,
according to a British study.
(Other fish high in Omega-3
are: Tuna, bass, trout,
halibut, snapper and sole.)
lu
0IIve: Those
who regularly
use olive oil
were 41 percent less likely
to have a stroke, according
to a French study of more
than 70,000 over-65s. Its
protective effect is thought
to be due to its high levels
of monounsaturates.
Canola oil is another
healthy choice its even
lower in saturated fat than
olive oil (7 percent rather
than 15 percent) and has
much hi gher l evel s of
Omega 3s (30 percent
rather than 10 percent).

STAY YOUNG
Wind back the cIock with these proven anti-aQeinQ strateQies
MDV IT, DDN'T IDS IT
Jogging, brisk walking or cycling can
delay ageing by up to 12 years, says one
major UK study. Most women begin to
lose fitness when theyre around 35,
but cardio exercise which strengthens
the heart and lungs can halt and even
reverse the decline. Aim to exercise
three times a week for a total of two-
and-a-half hours. Anything that raises
the heart rate, such as gardening or
swimming, is good.
B AN HDURCIASS,
NDT AN APPI!
A large waist is more damaging
to your health than being
generally obese because your
tummy stores a dangerous
type of fat. US scientists
found that those with a spare tyre were
more than twice as likely to die younger
from all causes. Hula hooping is a great
way to trim your waist.
MAX YDUR BAUTY SIP
A good nights sleep allows cells to
regenerate, strengthens the immune
system and removes toxins from the
body. One Swedish study found that
people deprived of sleep for long
periods appeared less attractive and
more unhealthy than when they were
well rested. Aim for the same bedtime
each night and try not to snooze too
long in the morning. Keep your room
dark and avoid caffeine late at night.

increases the release of happiness
hormones such as endorphins and the
neurochemical serotonin, which in
turn decrease the stress hormone
cortisol, so we feel more relaxed.
Laughter also gives the body a
cardiovascular workout, increasing
blood flow to organs, oxygenating the
blood and toning the stomach.

TWIST AWAY TDXINS
A simple body twist is a great yoga pose
to help you feel and look younger, says
yoga guru Nisha Gera (yoganisha.com).
Sit up straight, ideally with your legs
crossed, or out straight in front of you.
Inhale, lengthen your spine and, on an
exhalation, take your right hand behind
your lower back, placing it on the floor
if you can, and look over your right
shoulder. Remain like that for 10
breaths, noticing each inhalation and
exhalation. Switch sides. Twists help
remove toxins from the liver and
spleen, says Nisha.
IDV IT UP
Sex gets the blood pumping and
releases feel-good chemicals such as
oxytocin. But relationship expert
Keren Smedley (experiencematters.
org.uk) believes its the cuddles rather
than the 50 Shades type of sex that
keep us young. As we get older we may
start to feel invisible, therefore
someone being attracted to us is really
important. Sex releases endorphins
and stress in your body but its about
feeling wanted and someone finding
you attractive, says Keren. Talk to
each other so that you both feel good
about whats happening. If sex has
become less comfortable ask your
doctor for advice and remember that
holding, touching and cuddling can
give as much pleasure and that not all
sex has to end in orgasm.

Look after your teeth to reduce the
chances of developing dementia.
Researchers at the University of
California found that those who
brushed their teeth only once a day
were up to 65 percent more likely to
develop dementia than those who
brushed twice daily. Dr Nigel Carter,
of t he Bri t i sh Dent al Heal t h
Foundation, says, Who would think
that brushing your teeth twice a day
could potentially save your life? Gum
disease has also been linked to heart
attack, stroke and diabetes. Brush for
two minutes each time with fluoride
toothpaste and floss between your
teeth. Avoid sugary foods and drinks,
and have regular dental check-ups.

STAY RCUIAR
Fibre helps the body absorb all those
anti-ageing nutrients youll be taking
on board, but most people arent
getting enough. The recommended
level is 18gm a day found in one bowl
of bran flakes, two slices of wholemeal
bread, one baked potato and an apple.
Other good options include beans,
brown rice and wholegrain pasta.
MDITAT
Too much stress causes the body to
turn off its ability to build and repair,
speeds up the ageing process and
weakens its immunity, says Sandy
Newbigging, author of Thunk! How To
Think Less For Serenity And Success. If
youre feeling stressed, ask yourself
what is bothering me? Is it my
workload, lack of time or something
else? he says. Once you highlight
whats causing you anxiety, take a 60-
second time-out by breathing in for a
count of four, then exhaling for a count
of four. As you do, recognise that
getting stressed isnt going to improve
the situation. Move on with your day
from a place of inner peace and see that
when you stop fighting against what
you dont want, you become more
effective in making any positive
changes you do want.
STAND TAII
The secret to youth is body confidence,
says Ivana Daniell, founder of Life in
Movement. And the passport to body
confidence is good posture. If your
posture is not aligned, your core muscles
will not work efficiently. Before you
start any exercise programme, have
your posture checked by a professional
who will detect and resolve any
imbalances and advise you of the most
suitable regime for you, she says.
TRY TD STAY SAF
IN YDUR SKIN
The sun is public enemy number one
when it comes to premature ageing.
Too much sun exposure can harm both
the appearance and the health of your
skin, says Dr John Lear, consultant
dermatologist at the Manchester Royal
Infirmary. Wear an SPF every day and
give yourself a regular five-minute
inspection it might be easier to feel
than to see damage.

How Not To Overeat At A Do...
This is the season for famiIy,
friends and. food. That would be
fine if it was just one day, but the
festive period is full of opportunities
to indulge. Not surprising, then, that
the average person consumes an extra
500 calories a day which adds up to
a weight gain of approximately 2kg by
the end of the month, according to the
British Dietetic Association. And dont
rely on your New Year resolutions to
help you lose it, as festive weight gain
tends to stay on and accumulate
over the course of the year, say US
researchers. Start a new trend this
year with these simple tactics:
Take a quIck wa!k before !unch.
A st udy that tracked f requent
emotional snackers found that those
who went for a brisk five-minute walk
when surrounded by temptation were
much less likely to overeat than those
who sat still.
Don't save !eftovers. Hosting a
festive get-together? Keep only the
meat and leftover veggies. Send
hi gh- cal ori e goodi es, such as
chocolates, cake and cookies, home
wi t h your guest s, or wrap up
individual portions of the high-
calorie fare for your family.
Dffer to serve. Instead of accepting
the huge pile of food that your mum/
sister/gran dishes out, offer to serve
everyone at the table. That way, you
choose how much ends up on your
plate and score brownie points for
being helpful!
IInger over !unch. Youll eat 15
percent fewer calories if you sit down
and eat more slowly. Rushing a meal
means the hypothalamus the part
of the brain that registers when youre
full doesnt receive the right signals,
so you may feel hungrier sooner.

One snores when there is blockage in the air passage
while breathing. It can be because of a respiratory
infection, stuffy nose, an allergy or due to adenoids
(nasopharyngeal tonsil). Snoring could also be a result
of sinus congestion or deviated nasal septum. Here are
some remedies that may help your child:
Ayurveda
Look for ginseng as the main ingredient in your
herbal capsules it increases immunity.* Ayurvedic
herbs such as ashwagandha, shatavari, guduchi,
gokshura, aamlaki and shilajit also help. These are
available in capsule form at ayurvedic medicine
stores. However, its best to take your child for a
professional check-up to begin with.

Naturopathy
For long-term relief, you can, over time, teach your
child jalaneti (yogic nose washing technique), which
he should practise every day under your supervision.
Steam inhalation with tulsi (basil) and pudina (mint)
leaves at night, before going to bed, also help open up
the air passage and ease breathing.

Homeopathy
Boost his overall immunity with long-term
homeopathic care. This will help reduce
incidents and intensity of colds, cough and
allergies. Try Bryonia 200 three pills four
times a day for quick relief.

Uplifting orange radiates warmth and happiness. A
touch of terracotta or apricot around the eyes and
dusted over cheekbones is a wonderfully soft summer
update for all skin tones, from the palest to the
darkest, says UK-based makeup artist Carol Brown.
Its a real wakeup call, making tired eyes and a jaded
complexion look healthy and alive.
Nervous about wearing too much orange? You can
keep your basic makeup and simply add a pop of peach
to the cheeks, says Carol. People wont quite know
what it is about you that seems better, but theyll

then use orange, but not right next to

Cultivate a passion for berry shades.
Purple is a great alternative to neutral

For this look, Carol uses a rich purple

well for warmer skin tones.

simple way to add colour around the
eyes is with mascara in a subtle shade.
Experiment with plum mascara one
of our favourites as its easy on the eye.
Think of it as a warm brown that will
help bring out the colour of your eyes,
from the darkest brown to light, says
Carol. Use Este Lauder Sumptuous
Two Tone Eye Opening Mascara
in Rich Plum (`1,100), on top and
bottom eyelashes.
TRICK DF TH IICHT
Most of us start to lose our inherent
radiance in our 30s (sigh), but you can
add some back. Apply a good-quality
gold eyeshadow only to the outer corner
of the eyelids for a fabulously glamorous
look for any occasion.
For a slightly subtler effect that works
for both day and night, try a light copper.
Sweep it on for a veil of colour or build
it up for an intense look.
Celebrities have their favourite
photographers light them for photo
shoots the next best thing to a cosmetic
surgeon. But thanks to dazzling
advances in technology, now makeup
can add a fabulous luminosity to the
skin. A shining example is Lotus Herbals
Naturaglow Daily Tinted
Moisturiser (`475) or
the Olay Total Effects
Touch of Foundation
(`749) for beautiful,
subtle coverage.
According to Carol,
the right application is
as important as the right
product. Apply the product sparingly,
and only where you need it especially
a foundation. If you apply too much,
even a good product can ood into lines
and overload skin, and even a 20-
something will look older, she says.
MaIc CoIours That

all through the
1990s, Juhi Chawla was known as the

bubbly, happy characters she played
with great success. In real life too she
was known for her vivacity. She was

my set, my work! Now, my focus has

definitely become more spiritual, and
I think, a better person! she says.
Earlier she felt yoga and meditation
were for people who had nothing
better to do, now her perspective has
changed. I say my prayers daily and
practise yoga too. Even once if I miss
doing it because I may be trying to
juggle too many things I feel like
something is missing from my day.
We meet at her sprawling Malabar
Hill bungalow in Mumbai. Well-
appointed and luxurious, the place
has several art pieces strewn around,
yet is infused with a lived-in, warm
feel much like its hostess who walks
in looking bright and cheerful in a
fitted but comfortable jeans and a
simple white top, apologising for the
delay. A tall glass of freshly squeezed
orange juice is offered to me, and we
settle down for a chat, while rain
beats down the glass windows.
Shes matured her children have
grown (Jhanvis 12 years old and
Arjun is 9), she is now the co-owner
of an IPL team and is back to doing
more cinema but she retains her
basic joyfulness. Says the actor, I
liked doing Badmaash Company the
childrens chat show on TV, because
it had humour and innocence. I think
those are the things I will always
look for in the work I do I want to
preserve that part of me.
Beauty Wise
While she professes to be in the same
boat that most Good Housekeeping
women find themselves in not
getting enough time for self grooming
at 46, Juhi looks fit and beautiful,
her skin glowing with good health.
Does she follow a beauty routine? I
start my day with yoga and meditation
when I can. Besides that, the only
thing I do my secret recipe for good
skin is to use cucumber to tone my
skin. I cut out thin slices of cucumber
and dip them in cold milk. Then lying
down, I put the pieces on my face and
relax for at least 20 minutes, and wash
it off afterwards. It tones the skin,
does away with blemishes and makes
me look younger. This is my most
important beauty tip for the GH
reader! Although your husband may
complain because it looks horrible,
make sure you do it. Besides this, she
suggests that everyone begin their
day with two glasses of water.
Life knocks you around, wisens you. I am now more spiritual,
and I think, a better person! The beautiful actor, wife, mother and
businesswoman tells you what keeps her joyful By Mohini Mehrotra

Though she went off the limelight and

to act in off beat films or regional

semi-3D-animation Hindi film that
released last year (only Krishnas part
and some bits of the movie were

Juhi as the lead also saw special
appearances from two of Bollywoods
biggest names Hrithik Roshan and
Katrina Kaif. Although the film didnt
get visibility or do much business,
Juhi enjoyed the experience.
She was back into the mainstream
with the recent film, Son of Sardar
where she plays the role of the
beautiful Pammi, who waits for two
long decades for her beloved Billo
(Sanjay Dutt) to marry her, which he
does after a series of impossible ups
and downs. The film released on
November 13 last year, her 45th
birthday. It went on to become a big
box office hit and Juhi got a lot
appreciation for her acting and her

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MARCH 2013 93
look of the Punjabi damsel in pretty
Patiala salwar suits with jhumkas,
juttis, parandas et al. After a long
time I was part of a huge set where
we were wearing colourful, heavily
embellished clothes, had a big budget,
and I was working with stars that I
had not worked with in a long time.
All of us (the film also stars Ajay
Devgn and Sanjay Dutt) had come
together after many years, and it was
a wonderful experience. It felt great
to be back on the glitzy sets. It was a
pure Bollywood-style movie the
subject was light romance, action
and a lot of fun a feel-good, happy
movie. You enjoy the movie and come
out smiling. For me it was like a roller
coaster ride! I enjoyed everything
The shoot, the sets, the locale, the
co-stars! she recalls.
Juhi has started shooting with
actor Madhuri Dixit (who shes never
worked with before) for Gulab Gang,
a project she is excited about. The
movie, which is being directed by
Soumik Sen, will portray the social
injustice meted out to the women in
some parts of the Indian interiors. It
is based on the real-life struggle of a
group of women called Gulab Gang,
run by their leader Sampat Lal (who
was a part of the reality TV series,
Bigg Boss 6). Together they fight for
womens rights. The film also stars
Mahie Gill and Shilpa Shukla.
The Bigger Picture
Juhi wears her many hats lightly and
is modest about it. She declares she
is not a business person at all its
husband Jay who looks into things
and oversees a lot of her work. On the
home front she credits her staff who
she says has been managing her
home impeccably for years now. I
have been very fortunate in certain
ways Suppose I had to run it (the
house) myself its not about the size
of the house, but looking into every
little detail I wouldnt have been
able to do much. My helps keep it all
together, she says.
A Knock-out!
Juhi and actor and business partner
Shah Rukh Khans friendship goes
way back, even before they started
the film production house Dreamz
Unlimited. And then they went on to
own an IPL cricket team, the Kolkata
Knight Riders. Juhi is said to have
called the actor her Lucky Ali. He
brings good luck to the people
associated with him, she says. And
lucky he turned out to be. Last year,
in a nerve-wracking finale, Kolkata
Knight Riders beat Chennai Super
Kings by 5 wickets to emerge winners
of the Indian Premier League 2012.
It felt great! Weve been through a
lot of lows. But I think success feels
sweeter after the lows. Although
while going through the tough times
you feel despair, eventually when it
all comes together you realise there
was a learning in all of this this was
necessary. I feel that this success
after the numerous losses keep the
team grounded, the owners SRK
and me also grounded, she says.
Juhi is of ten found with her
children at KKR matches. She says
her children know more about the
game than she does. They watch the
IPL matches more than I do. In fact,
Jhanvi went for one of the matches,
and I wasnt there. The team lost.
That stayed with her, and I had to
literally persuade her to come for the
finals. I told her that you can never
be inauspicious for something you
love so much. We went for the finals,
and we won!
Not Just Childs Play
Talking about children, with her
businessman husband Jai travelling
94 GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MARCH 2013
for work often, does it get difficult?
The proud mother replies promptly:
Jhanvis an A-star student. Its not
because I push her to be so. She loves
to see the A stars in her report cards!
Her teachers keep telling me that
shes a very sweet child, a wonderful
student, well-mannered. But at home
she and Arjun are monsters! Her son,
she says, is a happy-go-lucky fellow,
an A-student. He wants his stars but
hes not working hard enough for
them. But hes a lot into sports, she
adds. The actor believes that children
need space to let their hair down. So
its fine to be monsters at home
sometimes!
We fight over excessive use of the
iPad, television, computers and so on,
like all children and mothers do, she
says. But she blames parents for
conf usi ng the chi ldren i n such
matters. Come the best phone in the
market, Jai buys it for them, and then
how do you say no? How do you stop
them from using it? We are the ones
at fault. I realise this, but its difficult
to say no! she confesses, adding that
since Jai travels a lot, and so when
hes home, he loves to indulge the
children movies, junk food, gadgets
theres no saying no. Juhi lets
them enjoy the time with their father.
We try to balance things its the
good cop/bad cop game I think most
parents play, she says.
I leave Juhis home, feeling upbeat.
The noise, the traffic, the rain and
pollution... all fades away. I am happy.
Life is not so bad after all I think

Kavita DevQan spaks to chs ano
hommakrs to nno out how to mak th
most o xtra virgin oliv oil
I traveIIed te ItaIy Iast Hevember and
what a trIg It was! I prayed at The
Vatican, experienced the warmth of strong
family ties at local homes and checked out
the latest fashion trends on the streets of
Rome. But my senses were busy soaking up
the taste, aroma and flavour of olive oil,
everywhere, and all the time. After all, olive
oil is the Mediterraneans biggest export to
the world, and in Italy they do almost all
their cooking with it.
Being a nutritionist and health writer, Im
familiar with the benefits of this oil,
particularly the extra virgin variety (EVOO).
But the big revelation was the discovery that
it is compatible with the Indian-style of
cooking. A finding that turned my earlier
belief that it is only suitable for pouring
over salads upside down.

108 GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MARCH 2013
BegIn WIth Breakfast
Id suggest you begin your day with
organic sprouts and steamed corn
drizzled with EVOO and some
lemon, says Chef Anurudh Khanna,
executive chef, The Park, New Delhi.
A piece of toasted wholewheat bread
or a baguette drizzled with EVOO is
perfect for me; it beats smothering
your morning with butter, says
Chef Chandra.
Savoury vermicelli is a popular
breakfast dish at Delhi-based model
and etiquette consultant Kavita
Ashoks house. I have tried it with
other oils but it turns out best with
extra virgin, says the home cook.
Here is her recipe: Heat a pan, add
2tbsp EVOO, some curry patta (curry
leaves), black mustard seeds, hing,
salt, green chillies and haldi. Fry for
a few minutes. Add a few peanuts and
finely chopped, parboiled veggies.
Add one cup boiled vermicelli and
lemon juice; check seasoning. Serve.
MaIn Mea!s
EVOO has a neutral taste and goes
best with tomatoes and most green
veggies particularly French beans,
cabbage and green peas. It works well
when minimal cooking is required,
says chef Anurudh. In my house I use
EVOO to cook dry vegetables such as
bhindi masala and aloo gobhi. I also
use it to temper dal and make
paranthas. He offers a tip for those
who like gunpowder with idlis; next
time mix it with EVOO instead of ghee
or any other oil.

ln the disquieting fiIm, The Truman
Show, the main character lives a
normal enough life, eating, going to
office, meeting his friends. Except
that unknown to him, everything he
does is watched by millions of TV
viewers. His whole life is lived in a
gigantic TV set, his whole town is
created for it. He lives in this bubble,
without knowing there is a life outside.
So, what happens when he gets to that
life outside? More importantly, what
happens when our children, raised in
a bubble of love, protection and caring,
get to that life outside?
Are we preparing them for the
future or are we protecting them from
it? Life is like an exam, complained a
teenager to me once long ago, where
everyone else knows the rules.
Perhaps, as parents, we need to start
the transition now to help our
children move from Little Lion Kings
at home to the Rat Race outside.
Spot The Bubb!e
The first step is to recognise in which
areas we are putting our child into a
bubble. For example, do you still
choose her friends? Perhaps its time
to let her invite her own friends over,
instead of the ones you think are right
for her. Trust her with the small
decisions clothes, books. Let her
build her own sense of judgement. Cut
out the bubble-wrap slowly.
Show Them Red F!ags
When we were young, we ran around
town unfazed, unafraid. So should
you let your little boy across the road
to buy bread only to get hit by a car?
Picked up by a predator? Not
indiscriminately! Times are much
more dangerous now There are no
rules here. Only a parent knows at
what age her child is ready to be left
alone for five minutes or an hour.
Some children are ready at 8, some
arent at 12. A recent survey showed
92 percent of women in Indian
metros felt unsafe after dark. Its a
very real fear that women live with.
In this one area, put safety first, not
independence. Teach them about
strangers, about bad touch, about
road safety. Tell them about the risks
of going home with someone else.
Iet Them Ioose
Geetika Mhandres (name changed)

also a chess-junior master. Yet, she is
worried about his future. She feels he

him successful at work. He is never

counselling herself. She had been
keeping him in a bubble by always
concentrating on sharpening his IQ
rather than letting him free-play with
peers. And the playground is the best
training camp really though a rough
one. Negotiation, flexibility, conflict
management children learn these
young, and take these skills with them.
Leaders, loners, bullies, defenders,
followers they first emerge here.
Put FIre In TheIr Be!!Ies
In India, only 53 percent of habitation
had a primary school at last count
(Source: The 7
th
All India Education
Survey). When you think of the
extraordinary distances many children
need to walk just to get to study every
day, you realise what a burning desire
to gain knowledge children have, that
we take for granted. It will pay to instill
this desire in our children. A child who
knows the value of discipline and hard
work in sitting up to do a school project
on his own, will be a child who puts
that same diligence and focus into his
work later on. And sees the results.
Move Dut Df The Way
The central task of growing up is
to develop a sense of self that is
autonomous, confident and in accord
with reality, says Madeline Levine, a
clinician, consultant and best-selling
author, as quoted in The New York
Times. If you dont trust your child to
achieve something, you diminish her
confidence and distort reality. She
cites examples of nightly reviews of
homework and repetitive phone calls
to just check if youre okay. Your
child is capable of doing something,
congratulate yourself on a job done
and move on. Continued, unnecessary
intervention makes your child feel bad
about himself (if hes young) or angry
at you (if hes a teenager).

The Fun PIan
My son, Arnav, 4,
loves drenching
everyone on Holi
but starts crying if he
gets even a little wet.
Last year, my husband
thought of a plan to get
him to be more accepting.
He left a bowl of gulal in
his room before he woke
up. While we watched from
the side, Arnav packed in
some colour in his st and
to our surprsie, applied it all
over his face! This act had us
bursting into laughter. Post
this, Arnav has started
enjoying the festival...

The BIg scage
Last year, my son Darsh, 3, insisted that
he will wear his new shorts on Holi. He
just wouldnt accept that on a festival
day he was expected to wear old clothes.
While I was trying to convince him to
change, his cousin dropped in and
splashed colour on his new shorts. Even
though, I got irritated, I was soon
laughing. It didnt matter, it was just a
pair of shorts. I am glad I went with the
festive moment.

The SurgrIse VIsIt
My husband travels a lot on work, and last year too, he was caught
up in a meeting in Chennai around Holi. My daughter Indira, 3,
was upset and spent the day before the festival sobbing and
sulking. But come Holi, her father surprised us and returned just
in time. The joy on my daughters face was the biggest gift for me.
It was heartening to see father-daughter play Holi while I whipped

Everyday Manners
All of us have faced these sometime or other: How much
do they pay you?, When are you getting married or So,
when do you plan to start your family?
The best way to tackle this is to ignore the question and
focus on some other aspects of the conversation. Or, try
changing the subject to someting common. As a last resort,
you can pretend to be distracted and not having heard it!
This is easy if in a group. Pick up a thread of conversation
with another in the group and drift away. All this has to
be done subtly.
With friends/acquaintances, you may try a direct
response: Hey, dont feel like talking about this right
now. Lets skip it But do this lightly to take the sting
out of the words.
If it is a relative who keeps bothering you,
try directing the conversation elsewhere
or ask them an equally personal
question! Theyre bound to take the hint
sooner than later.

Know Your ChiId
goodfamily
Its that time of the year when school admissions are
picking up pace and frenzy. Anxious parents are
queuing up in front of coveted schools and searching
for every qualification that might add a point to their
aspiration; and the future of their child. Their baby is
growing up to become a school-going child and
stepping into the competitive world soon, filling them
with deep-seated trepidation mixed with anticipation
and pride. Entrance tests and the dread of whether
my child will perform on that fateful day have
thankfully been abolished; or at least we are given to
believe so. But parents have to perform and be at their
best for the next few weeks.
The transition from playschool to formal school
could be fraught with stress and uncertainty. Not least
because of the limited number of good schools and
the growing demand for holistic education under a
famous banner. Parents are often forced to stretch
their resources to the fullest in order to fulfill dreams
that they may have nurtured for a while. And who do
you think bears the brunt of this strain on the family?
The child of course!
The importance of a smooth transition into the
big school cannot be overemphasised. At the age of
three and four, many children are at the cusp between
infancy and childhood, in the process of becoming ready
to separate from their parents for varying periods of
time. A lot of the initial experience of a child in a
new environment can be influenced by how it is
planned and approached.

WIre brushIng: Using a stiff wire, give the rack
a thorough scrubbing after each use. Brass-
bristle brushes are especially good for cleaning
porcelain-coated grills since they will not
damage the porcelain.

BrushIng eII: Keep your grill on for about 20-
30 minutes after the cooking is over, this will
ensure that all the residual food burns off.
Switch off and let the grill cool. Now using heat-
resistant mitts and a metal scraper, gently
scrape both sides of the grill to chip off food
thats stuck to the grill. Be careful with ceramic
grills as a sharp metal scraper might damage it
(try the other methods here instead).

SeakIng: If your grill isnt heavily stained,
place newspapers soaked in water on top of the
warm (not hot) grill after the cooking and shut
the lid. Open the lid after 30 minutes and wipe
off the residue. Dont let the paper sit on the grill
for too long, otherwise it may dry out, creating
more work for you.
VInegar treatment: Mix water and vinegar to
make a 50:50 solution in a bucket or the kitchen
sink. Set the cooking grates in this solution for
a few minutes. Spray undiluted vinegar on the
rack and the interior of the grill, scrub with a
pad made of aluminium foil. Use a cotton swab
to take care of the tight spots. Leave the grill to
air dry.

The IeII tray: Use a good quality kitchen foil,
triple layer it and turn the edges so that it works
like a tray. Place this at the bottom of your grill
and top with a 1/4inch deep layer of sand, this
will help absorb the juices that fall off the grill.
After a few uses, just remove the foil tray, give
the grill a quick wipe and insert a new tray.

VeIcanIc recks: If you use them, ensure you
clean or renew them periodically as these always
get clogged with fat. If rocks are showing signs
of cracking, replace them. Also, consider
replacing with porcelain briquettes, which are
less porous and easier to clean.

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MARCH 2013 139
I just got back from a pleasure trip: I took my
mother-in-law to the airport! Comedian Henny

travelling is a source of physical and mental
renewal for most of us even a short break from
the manic pace of everyday life rejuvenates like
little else. Members of the GH team recount their
travel experiences from the year gone by. Take a

Daddy Goa, Goa! My husband

into the Goa spirit, would throw caution

discovered Goa has amazing bakeries
too) and, of course, shopped and ate to
our hearts content. It was a perfect
break for all from work pressure,
lifes humdrum routines and the bitter
December cold in Delhi. Aadyas bonus:
her rst plane ride and beach dig!
Our stay was in two interconnected
1-BHK apartments, each with sofa-
cum-beds in the living rooms, lots of
balconies, cane furniture and sheer
curtains in cool creams. One living
room became a bedroom while the
second was a common area where we
feasted on homemade breakfast
(cooked up by mom on the hotplate in
the apartment), planned for the day
and re-lived daily activities late into
the night over cups of hot coffee. A
well-stocked supermarket right
outside the complex took care of daily
needs. And a line of restaurants close
by offering French, Italian and Goan
cuisines ensured we were never short
of meal options.
What all did we do? One whole day
was spent at a shack on Calangute
beach. The grandparents and baby
relaxed, ate, took a snooze, and enjoyed
blaring music and rowdy dances by the
young (and thoroughly drunk) guests.
We tried out water sports the jet ski,
bumper and parasailing!
Like every good tourist, we visited
the Basilica of Bom Jesus, saw the
remains of Saint Francis Xaviers body
in the casket, lit candles and sent up
our wishes. We also made it to the
Mangeshi temple on Goas Panaji-
Ponda road. It took about an hour from
our apartment in north Goa. but it was
worth the effort. Snacking on slices of
delicious raw mango and cucumber
sprinkled with masala and nimbu,
washed down with fresh coconut
water, we walked for about 20 minutes
to meet Lord Shiva at the temple.
Interesting curios, including uncut
crystal (it said to bring luck and
positivity), made great take-home
gifts. Another plus: while looking for
Shri Mangesh Saunsthan temple, we
stumbled upon a less-known but
beautifully carved and maintained
Mahalaxmi temple, which houses
gigantic nagaadas. The prasad was a
coconut that we had to take home and
use to make dessert.
And yes, we did all the rest that
everyone must in Goa as well: took a
ferry ride on the river Mandovi, with
live music, dance, food and drinks; had
our ll of green, scenic drives; paddled
to our hearts content in the sea, and
collected seashells

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MARCH 2013 141
My husband and I had been planning
a family weekend for quite a while.
The place had to be convenient for the
entire family. With my parents living
in Lucknow, my sister (with her
husband and four-year-old son
Hridhaan) in Noida, and us in Delhi,
and everyone with busy schedules, it
was a tough task, especially since we
didnt want to waste too much time
on the road. With some help from
Google, we decided to head for
Bharatpur in Rajasthan.
On a bright, sunny winter day, after
a leisurely breakfast, we left Delhi
excited to drive down the much-
talked-about Yamuna Expressway (a
dream road for driving enthusiasts)
that connects Delhi to Agra. Enjoying
the verdant mustard fields, cool
breeze, good music, and the smooth
drive, we took the lef t turn for
Bharatpur between Mathura and
Agra. (Keep driving straight on the
expressway till you see the sign telling
you where to turn.)
Three hours later, we were in
Bharatpur, an otherwise insignicant
looking small town, with only one
feature bringing it into the travellers
radar the Keoladeo National Park,
also known as the Bharatpur Bird
Sanctuary. We were met at the gate by
my parents and brother, who had
already reached Bharatpur a day in
advance. We bought entry tickets and
hired a guide to take us into the
sanctuary. Six kilometres in, we had
to leave our car and take rickshaws or
go ahead on foot. But rst we decided
to check out the small museum the
focus here was on the Sarus Crane (the
only resident crane of India) that the
park is most famous for.
As we stepped out, we were warned
by the guide to be as quiet as possible
or else the birds would be frightened
away. Word of advice: The guide is paid
by the hour, so check beforehand.
Sometimes they carry binoculars with
you have pay extra to use them.
The rickshaw pullers (who charge
`20 per hour) are well-trained, and
help you spot the birds and animals;
they also know when to stop to catch a
view. Let them lead you. The sanctuary
is known to house more than 230
species of birds. On our journey
through the park, we spotted geese,
hawks, a variety of cranes, ycatchers,
wagtails, nilgai, monkeys, partridges,
fishing cat, and two kinds of owls a
small white type, and the big brown
one. Through the binoculars we could
see their colours and nuances a
fascinating experience even if you are
not an ornithologist. My nephew
Hridhaan, was particularly delighted.
Tired but happy at our tryst with
nature, we headed back to the car
park. Avoid carrying snacks into the
park you may have meddl i ng
monkeys snatch them out of your
hands. We paused for hot tea at a small
stall near the parking and decided to
take turns at the rickshaws the
pullers didnt mind.
Go in a big group - Iike we

to go out sightseeing, you

142 GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MARCH 2013
Our family is scattered across cities
and continents. So when we plan
reunions we make Mumbai, where
my grandmother lives, our base. Its
easy to reach and travelling onward
from there is hassle-free to organise.
This time, it was my aunt and her two
young daughters (13 and 11) who were
visiting from New Jersey. I was
looking forward to spending time
with my cousins. A second aunt, her
husband and my grandmother were
also part of our travelling band.
Our plan was to do as little as
possible. Sure wed try and see some
of the touristy stuff, but the main
agenda on such trips is always to just
spend time with each other. We
checked in at The Lagoona Resort,
about two hours from Mumbai. This
place meets the needs of a young
family on vacation. Between the
impressive swimming pool and a
recreation room kitted out with the
usual entertainment and games, we
had enough to stay occupied.
Our rst stop was Tigers Leap as
it offers spectacular views of the
landscape. Unfortunately, the
weather gods had other plans. A thick
blanket of fog blocked any Kodak
moment. This of course was great
news for the masala chai and
bhajiya sellers. While my aunt had
grown up in Mumbai, 19 years in the
US made her promise to stay away
from street food. She caved in the
minute see saw those plates of
crunchy, golden, deep-fried goodness,
and tucked in like the rest of us.
Pleasantly full, we carried on to
Bushi dam. A nearby waterfall makes
it popular with visitors. However, the
dam was overowing so we could only

We were staying at the Kadamb
Kunj Resort, a simple property
overlooking owering mustard elds.
Theres a decent-sized outdoor pool
(was shut for the wi nter) and
arrangements for badminton and
table tennis. Its great for children
since theres plenty of space to enjoy
a game of cricket so carry bats and
balls. In the winter, the resort
organises bonres in the evenings;
you can sit around and enjoy local
dance and music performances at no
extra charge. If you want a private
party, you can ask the resort to set up
a bonfire with snacks and drinks
near the pool. We just took our drinks
to the pool, and lounged around chit-
chatting with family. Simple and so
much fun.
The order-in food at the hotel is not
gourmet but does fine. The buffet
breakfast is basic eggs, poha, puri
aloo. The dinner buffet though was
delicious the showstopper was the
chicken in white gravy. Service is
laid-back, so be prepared.
Also visit the government museum
that houses a heritage collection of
archaeological wealth from the old
Bharatpur state and nearby areas; and
the Lohagarh Fort, which was
constructed by Bharatpur Jat rulers
to ward off the Britishers. But the
thing to do is just relax and let go.

catch a glimpse from afar and had to
keep going. As we drove along, we looked
out for the wax museum. Ive visited
Madame Tussauds in Hong Kong, so I
wasnt sure what Sunils Celebrity Wax
Museum had to offer. As it turned out,
we discovered, it was not bad. He had all
the big Indian names including Mother
Teresa, AR Rahman and Anna Hazare.
From the international set he had lifelike
statues of Michael Jackson, Angelina
Jolie, Benazir Bhutto, and Adolf Hitler
to name a few.
The next day we set off to see the
Dukes Nose, a cliff that is said to look
like the nose of the Duke of Wellington!
However, the weather gods once again
conspired to spoil our view. Despite
waiting for about 30 minutes, we never
got to tell whether the cliff did indeed
resemble the Dukes nose. Night-time
was game-time. Uno, Taboo, Housie,
air-hockey, pool and playing cards were
all available at the resort.
The next day, we cousins decided to
stay back in the hotel, while my aunts
and uncle went out to meet old friends.
We gave each other makeovers hair,
makeup, the works. We followed this up
with a trip to Ryewood Park, which was
blooming with flowers and has trees
many decades old. The pesky monkeys
were not to be seen fortunately. We
went on to the Pawana Dam where we
were met with an unexpected surprise.
As we walked down the muddy trail
from the parking lot, we could hear the
gaggling of geese. It was feeding time at
the local restaurant and the geese were
loudly clamouring that they be served.
On t he way, we drove past t he
beautiful paddy fields dotted with
waving women working in the rain.
Then it was back to the cosy connes of
family: laughter, catching up on things,
and lots of good food!

ORCHHA W!TH HER COLLEAGUES
It was July and hot in Delhi. We wanted
a break-away from the routine.
No one was interested in the
regulars Neemrana, Nainital,
Jaipur. So when Mamta (deputy editor
at our sister publication, Design
Today) suggested we go to Orchha, we
all jumped at it. None of us, barring
her, had been to the place. We booked
tickets online and roped in an ex-
colleague Shiny to join in the fun,
along with two little darlings, four-
year-old Arnav (art director Renus,
son) and three-year-old Rewa
(Mamtas daughter). Orchha is a small
town in Madhya Pradesh situated on
the banks of the river Betwa, just
15km from Jhansi.
Our train left Delhi at 6am and
reached Jhansi at 11am. A half-hour
rickety ride through the potholes of
Jhansi and we were in Orchha.
The children ran off to play in the
sprawling greens while we checked
in at the Betwa Resort located on the
banks of the river. Clean, basic and
laid-back, the resort has AC rooms,
tents and a heritage suite. With huge
lawns and a garden, its a good place
to visit with young children.

144 GOOD HOUSEKEEPING MARCH 2013
After a quick lunch, we strolled
around the gushing river, which was
covered with vegetation on both sides.
By this time there was a light drizzle
but we decided to set out anyway. The
Orchha Sanctuary is across the river
but the connecti ng bridge was
ooded, quite literally dampening our
plans of taking a walk across it. We
stopped for chai and hot samosas. At
6 in the evening, we walked across to
the nearby Chaturbhuj temple, and
returned for more tea and at the
resort, followed by a simple and tasty
dinner of dal, rice, chapattis and
mixed vegetables.
Arnav and Rewa were up early and
ran around the corridors waking us
up with their laughter. After a hot
home-cooked type breakfast of poha,
idli and sambhar, we headed to the
Orchha Fort, situated in the middle of
town. The majestic structure stands
tall anked by palaces Raj Mahal,
Jahangir Mahal and Rai Parveen
Mahal. These palaces were built by
local kings Madhukar Shah, Raja Bir
Singh Ju Deo and Raja Indramani in
the 17
t h
century. For lunch we
went across to the small Italian
restaurant called Meditteraneu.
With just a few chairs set up on the
terrace of a house, the place is not
really a restaurant but we decided to
take a chance and ordered pizza!
Suggest your own toppings. Else
you might just be served a gobhi
pizza! We also tried the pasta and
French fries. For desserts, we had
pancakes, surprisingly tasty.
We spent most of the next day
chatting, going for walks and enjoying
corncobs by the river. We did go across
to the other side on this day since the
river had abated but couldnt go into
the sanctuary, since the children
probably tired from all the running
around were not keen. However, the
sanctuary is covered with lush green
vegetation of Kardhai and Dhawa
trees. Theres also rafting on the river
if youre up to it. As we travelled
back to Delhi the next day, Shiny
emailed us saying, Hadnt laughed,
walked, run, imagined, or eaten so
much in a long time! That about sums
up our break.

veranda looked out to a tropical garden
with graceful trees; all delightfully
natural, not manicured to fake
perfection. The only other suite
downstairs was occupied by equally
aged people we were informed by
apologetic hotel staff.
Just 45 minutes from the Kolkata
airport, the Vedic Village resort near
the sleepy hamlet of Rajarhat, is
particularly suited for families with
elderly people, and those with small
children. Sprawled over acres, the
resort has cottages, well-appointed
rooms and suites most at ground
level with just a few rooms on the rst
floor. Thatched roofs, cool, stone-
paved corridors, wide open uncluttered
spaces, greens, a palm-lined pool
(shallow enough in enclosed parts for
a toddler to be safe in), a well-equipped
spa with a resident Ayurvedic doctor,
a small but adequate gym, are the
highpoints of the place.
We had a lazy breakfast at the coffee
shop and ambled over to the spa where,
following detailed consultations with
the doctor, we gave ourselves over to
deeply relaxing massages that eased
away all remnants of city-fatigue. A
steam and shower later, we glided out
as if walking on clouds, light and
refreshed. Lunch was at the nearby
Bhoomi restaurant, a part of the resort
but away from the main building. Going
over in a golf cart, we tucked into
delicious hilsa, kosha mangsho, luchi-
bhaji and mishti doi (the creamiest
ever) at the restaurant manned by
charming dhoti-clad bhodroloks.
Housed in a quaint thatched roof hut,
Bhoomi has mud walls, low seating and
interesting Bankura artefacts. Back
through the lazy sunshine (this was in
early April when the weathers still
fine) we indulged in a long siesta and
woke up to tea at the veranda with a
gentle evening breeze upping our sense
of well-being.
The next day, my mother and I spent
some pleasant time reading in the
surprisingly well-stocked library
located above the spa. The large
windows let in a ood of natural light
and overlook a tranquil lake that has
cottages around it. The faint fragrance
of lavender and rosemary that whiffs
up from downstairs all add to the mood
of lazy contentment as we browse a
while and carry our books back to the
suite. Later, I take a turn at the bar and
pick a Californian white chilled just
right. The bar has a good if somewhat
limited stock, but the thing to do here
is to sit back and gaze out at the
shimmering swimming pool shaded by
coconut palms that cast their ligreed
shade, like intricate jali work, on the
blue waters. The bar is near empty and
I revel in the absolute quiet.
We swam each morning we were
there I persuaded my aged parents
to join me. After their initial hesitance,
they enjoy soaking in the warmth; my
80-plus father swam after a gap of
about 10 years, exulting, surprised that
he still could. I also took a turn at the
small gym that was neat and tidy and
like every service at the resort, manned
by genuinely hospitable staffers. In
fact, one of the best parts of the resort
is the service: Warm and sincere. I am
told the staff is local and has been
trained in-house this is hospitality
from the heart.

January was a speciaI month for us
here at Good Housekeeping, lndia:
the 100th issue of the magazine hit the
stands! To celebrate, we held an event at
the new Gurgaon store of arttdinox, a
well-known brand in the home dcor
products and modular kitchen space. In
keeping with GH style, we decided to
celebrate the occasion with freshly
baked and iced cupcakes. Our kitchen
panellist Suhasini Sood gave a live
demonstration of how to make vanilla
cupcakes in a jiffy, while answering
questions and sharing baking tips.
After the cooking demonstration, the
editor, Manjira Dutta, interacted with
the audience and unveiled the 100
th

issue. She stressed on the importance of
always taking a little time out for
yourself during the day (no matter how
manic it gets), of occasionally pampering
yourself by going for that manicure, and
of cultivating a support system in
friends. Mr Tom Joseph of arttdinox
discussed the benefits of a modular
kitchen compared to a conventional
kitchen. See you at the next event! Well
keep you posted.

Susan Heeer Is
the co-author of
Frcm 5eed tc
5killet. She and
her famIIy IIve In
Ios AneIes.
My dad remarried when l was 16. Her name
was Patty, and she was a major power in the
kitchen. There, at the heart of the ranch house
they shared, she always had a magazine on a
stand, sheathed in Plexiglas to protect its pages,
while she orbited around it in her apron, from
page to stove to sink to page, checking steps,
sniffing, tasting. Too young to be my mom, too old
to be a friend, she looked a little like Jane Fonda,
very pretty with her made-up eyes, frosted hair,
narrow hips, tiny high-heeled feet, and a short
skirt that showed her legs.
My dad adored her, I thought, at my expense.
Who was she? Never previously married, Patty
had no children of her own, though to her credit,
she didnt try to co-opt me or talk some grown-up
approximation of my language. Instead, she
grated nutmeg, separated eggs, poached fish,
handled knives like surgical tools.
My mother, whom I loved deeply, was a no-fuss,
can-loving cook who craved candy more than
anything and bought TV dinners once divorced.
She retired her index box of recipes. She served my
brother, sister and me frozen chicken pot pies and
icecream for dessert. She rarely talked about food.
What could you say? You ate it, and it was gone.
For Patty, and for my dad, cuisine existed on
another level. They planned it out; shopped for
it; discussed and savoured it. My dad loved to eat
Id known that, of course a little too much:
He was often on a diet. But food now was a
passion he shared with Patty. He stood around
with me and watched. Just marvelling. Like me,
hed never seen a person so happy in the kitchen
with her ingredients, her instruments. It was
plain that what she read recipes that ran for
pages was part of a high-wire thrill for her, and
that pulling off a complicated dish was a prize
she won for him.
But Patty gave me something, too. She waited
out my early judgments, observing my grudging
interest in her cooking. A couple of years passed
before she gave me my first subscription to a
food magazine and, following that, a series of
complementary gadgets. Before I had my first
apartment, I had a Cuisinart. Before I had a
stove, I had a wok. For a while, these lived in
closets at my moms, and I read the magazines,
fascinated and appalled at the complexity of
bread, pte brise, stuffed pork chops. As
impatient as I was for life to start, I knew Id
never have the time to spend on these. I wouldnt
waste it! Nevertheless, like my dad, I felt the
magic of hanging out in kitchens. I loved the
colours, textures, and flavours of food, and the
fact that with a recipe and a methodical
explanation of technique, I myself might be
capable of transforming disparate ingredients
into an entirely harmonious whole, something
that linked me affectionately to others.
As time went by, as I finished school, moved
and moved, married, had a child, I began to read
more earnestly and to cook, with love for my
husband and son, from my accumulated
magazines and from cookbooks Patty gave me. I
stopped seeing kitchen-time as a waste,
understood the intangible grace of good food.
Its here and then its gone, true. But like Patty,
who died in 1989, it leaves something of itself
behind. The memory changes you. How to
describe it? You cant. What can you say? Those
who know, know.
