The Beginning of Homosexuality


In the late 19
th
century a German psychologist, Karoly Maria Benkert was responsible for
inventing the word homosexuality. Since history of cultural considerations of the same-sex
attraction there has been many philosophical discussion that shows briefly some of the
social history of homosexuality.
In many historical documents show clues and evidence linking to homosexuality. For
example, In Platos Symposium, expresses love between grown men for boy that seem liked
a common entity. Even in Rome with famous rulers such as Julius Caesar, Nero and Tiberius
were disreputable respects of homosexuality. Soon homosexuality became very common in
India, China, Java, Islamic north Africa.
As the centuries progressed, countries like Germany, England, France and the United States
there have been a larger population of homosexuals. Many of these members of the
homosexuals population were artist, writers, singers, preachers, and musicians. Some of the
biggest changes in society of homosexuality was the gay liberation movement in the West.
History on Homosexuality
European History: There was studies on the human sexual behavior from doctors and
scientists. Qualified and Famous Germen doctors, such as Sigmund Freud and Magnus
Hirschfield. Study the concept of homosexual and bisexual orientation occurring in human
kind. The doctors did not view homosexuality as an illness or a crime, but more towards
sympathetic views.
United States History: Attempts for groups advocating homosexuality relationships after
World War II. During the 1920s, the war allowed more people of the homosexuality to cross
paths as soldiers and volunteers. This caused greater attentiveness for gay and lesbian
relationship to stand out. In 1950s affected political demands by homosexuals for fair
treatment for jobs, mental health, and public policy.
Gay liberation Movement
On June 27, 1969 as part of a policy New York police raided and closed Gay
Bars. The police would rough up customers and provoke fights with the gay
men, lesbians, and drag queens. As a result, many couldnt stand the injustice
and police brutality. On 4
th
of July, lesbian and gay men staged a walk out to
the Alternative University in Greenwich Village that became the first Gay
Liberation front.
Discrimination
Society during 1950s, was very hatful and rejected the gay and lesbian
liberation movement. Society perceived gays as a mental disease or a crime.
Psychologist were convinced that homosexuality could be cured, through in
humane techniques or by teachings homosexuality the correct gender roles.
Many homosexuals were locked up in mental asylums issued by the state.
The laws did not protect gays and lesbians from discrimination from
employment, harassment, public humiliation, and hate crime that eventually
leads to murder.
Many members of the gay
community was fighting for the
lives.
Many member of the gay community or even
just people who was caught in a same-sex
relationship, were constantly being
discriminated against. Many of these cases
result in hate crimes that leads to many innocent
deaths.
Gay and lesbians feared for their lives everyday.
Acceptance
Societys view on the LGBT community has changed over the years. There is
a lot more acceptances now, than before.
Societys acceptance of homosexuality have many contributing factors such
as the events and movements to promote a better understanding of
homosexuality and the LGBT community
There biggest issues in the LGBT community that has bought to many
American's attention is the equal right of same-sex marriage.

Unresolved Problems
Since the gay liberation movement, the has been a religious rights war on
LGBT community. Religious right groups do not support individual choice.
Although, society is slowly accepting the LGBT community, many associated
with a certain religion still does not accept the LGBT lifestyle.

Support the LBGT Community
The LBGT Community is not only fighting for themselves, but for equal
rights to obtain the pursuit of happiness.
Equal rights issues is not only for the LBGT Community but other that have
also suffered discrimination, from race and color of their ethnicity, gender,
religion, age, disability, and sexual orientation.
