comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, or concepts
of information in two or more texts.

Behavioral Objectives:
Students will demonstrate understanding of cause and effect by using mad-

Academic Language: Cause, Effect

Procedure: Students will watch Brain Pop Jr. Video on Cause and Effect. Teacher
will discuss concepts from the video, gauging understanding and elaborating if
necessary. Teacher will read aloud A Peachy Beach Day worksheet and model the
first response before engaging students to work as a group to complete the other
questions. Students will then participate in the Cause and Effect Mad-Libs game to
create their own cause and effect situations.

Activating Prior Knowledge: Students will watch Brain Pop Jr. Video and teacher
will discuss cause and effect concepts covered, elaborating any concepts that were
not understood and addressing any misconceptions. Students will have the
opportunity to discuss a real-life cause and effect situation which they have
encountered.

Modeling: Teacher will model the mad-lib cause and effect game by rolling each
dice and completing the prompts out loud so the students can observe. Teacher will
demonstrate the creation of appropriate cause and effect situations.

Guided Practice: Teacher will guide students in the creation of their first
cause/effect mad-lib sentence. Each student will contribute their ideas and
collaboratively, with teacher guidance, write and record a sentence.

Independent Practice: Teacher will allow students to independently complete
cause and effect mad-lib game, creating at least 3 sentences. Students will be
prompted to use pen and paper or a word processer to record their game answers.

UDL Elements:

Multiple means of representation:
2.5 Illustrate through Multiple Media: Concepts will be presented via Brain Pop Jr.
Video, and through activating prior knowledge discussion of real-world cause and
effect.

3.2 Highlight Patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships: Cause and effect
concepts will be highlighted via video and discussion.

3.4 Maximize transfer and generalization: By allowing students to create their own
cause and effect situations, they see the many contexts which cause and effect is
applicable.

Multiple means of Engagement:
7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity: Students will have the opportunity
to discuss and create real-world situations involving cause and effect through
discussion and mad-libs game.

8.2 Vary demands and resources to optimize challenge: Students will learn and
practice identifying cause and effect through video and mad-lib game.

Multiple means of Expression:
4.2 Vary the methods for response and navigation: Students will express their
understanding of cause and effect through creation of their own cause and effect
situations.

6.2 Facilitate managing information and resources: Students will be given the option
to record understanding and findings on the computer or traditional pen and pencil
to allow more time for understanding concepts than recording.
