Analysis of Maps
Prompt
I will provide you with a selection of maps. You will chose one map that will serve as the topic of
your analysis. You may also submit your own map for my approval if you wish. Using the skills
you learned in the Map Analysis Module, you will define the purpose or ideology that underlies
the map, analyze the strategies used by the mapmaker to achieve his or her purpose, and
evaluate the maps effectiveness in achieving its function.
The basic structure for your essay is as follows:
An introduction that describes the general characteristics of the map and presents your
thesis.
A second paragraph that describes the maps rhetorical situationits author, intended
audience/audiences, its stated or apparent purpose, and the context in which the text
appeared. This may require some light (informal) research
Several supporting ideas identifying and analyzing strategies used by the mapmaker.
Do not try to cover all the strategies you seethat could take up a whole book. Instead,
select a few strategies that you see as the main contributors to the maps overall effect.
Analyze one strategy per supporting idea. It may be that to create flow and to give points
sufficient impact a supporting idea may be more than one paragraph, although it is
entirely possible and valid to contain each idea to a single paragraph.
In these paragraphs, you will need to thoroughly describe the elements in the text to
provide examples of the effects you are discussing. Dont assume that your readers
can see the same things that you seeshow them what you are looking at. If you can,
include images taken from the map within your paper; however, do not limit your paper
to a description. You must show how the map affects and appeals to its target audience
and evaluate why each strategy is effective or not.
A conclusion that summarizes the overall effect of the map and brings you back to your
thesis. You may also include a critical judgment of the map. Does the map adequately
achieve its purpose? How is this map a reflection of the society and culture from which it
came? How (if at all) has society changed since this map was created?

Explanation of that support and clear connections between the supporting idea and the
thesis.
Style:
Clear, readable prose and sentence structures with an academic tone that offer variation
and give fluency.
Proper use of grammar, mechanics, and citations.

More Strong Suggestions
The thesis, as always, is key. Take the time to revise your thesis both before writing your
paper and after each draft.
Strong structure allows your ideas to be communicated effectively. Avoid lengthy block
sections of prose. Think carefully about each supporting idea and how these form their
own papers within a paper.
