An inside look into our year! Partnering with students: Coursework, Assessments, and Progress Overview of Assessing Student Progress Myth: Assessments take place to examine a childs progress and test their ability to put them on an academic track
This is a common misconception especially in my classroom! We will not use the word assessment to refer to examinations, but rather as tools that assist me in discovering a students strength and areas where I can help students reach their highest potential. I am here to help and support, not pressure and punish! Overview of Assessments Weekly math quizzes Sometimes taken collaboratively with partners or individually to create cohesion in teams One-on-one reading discussion and dialogue Completed bi-weekly with room parents who have checklists with 3 rd grade benchmarks Will follow-up with me to assign students with appropriate reading level that supports their strengths Full-classroom observations Parents will be invited once a month (or by appointment) to assist their child in the classroom Specialists will also be invited to make anecdotal observations
Portfolio Project annual progress Students will create a portfolio at the beginning of the year and add to it every week Contents include: Math worksheets, quizzes, and practice problems Take-home cursive practice Friday free-writes goals, reflection on the week Series of 5-paragraph essays: fiction, research, narratives Monthly mosaics and photography expositions Progress reports (provided by me, signed by parents)
Online e-portfolio will be accessible to families, including additional work samples and in-class video clips Portfolio Project cont. Goals of the Portfolio Project: To have students demonstrate growth over the year Identify their personal and academic goals Reflect on their progress: strengths, areas of improvement One-on-one meetings with me to check-in Bi-weekly Will give me an idea of what areas I can help the student in and how I can best fit their needs
