Activity #1: Independent Reading: I Was So Mad by Mercer Mayer- I will read to tutee

Activity #2: Follow the Path Game

Opening: Last week we played s-blend bingo! We were focusing on the beginning
sounds of different words. Today, we are going to do something similar by focusing on
the beginning sounds of more words, but these beginning sounds with have the r-sound in
them. (Discuss consonants and blends to review from last week if tutee seems unsure as
to what they are). Lets make the R-sound together. (practice the r-sound with tutee).
Great! We hear this r-sound in many words we read and write. I even hear it in READ
and WRITE! Can you think of any other words you hear the r-sound in? (let tutee say
words). Great! I hear the r-sound at the beginning of the work TRUCK. Hmm lets write
some r-sounds we hear at the beginning of words. (Work with tutee to think of beginning
r-sound words and write them down). Alright, now that we have a small list, lets read
through these words and pay careful attention to the r-sound we hear. Awesome! Today,
we are going to play a game that uses some of these words we wrote down and read. All
of the words we are working with in this game today are beginning r-blend sounds, lets
get started!

Modeling: This is the game board we will be using. (set out game board). I am going to
start at the very top and place my marker at the beginning. This stack of cards has
different pictures on each card. The picture represents a word that has the r-blend sound
in the beginning. So we will keep the stack of cards face down. I am going to flip over
the first card. Its a picture of a GRAPE. Hmmm GRAPE. GRRRRape. I hear the g and
the r-sound together. So on the game board, I am going to move my marker to the first gr
space I see! I am going to flip over another card. Its a picture of a TREE. Hmmm tree.
TRRRREE. I hear the t and the r sound in the beginning of tree. I am going to move my
marker to closest tr I see on the game board.

Guided Practice: Okay so now lets practice a couple of these together. (We will flip
over cards and have my tutee say what the picture is. We will repeat the name of the
picture multiple times, specifically sounding out the beginning r-blend sounds. I will keep
repeating until my tutee hears the sounds. I will ask tutee what two letter sounds she
hears and agree with her and say I hear them too. Then I will move my marker to the
correct space that corresponds with the letter sounds we heard together. This will
continue until I believe my tutee can sound out and hear the r-blends for herself so we
can play the game completely).

Independent Practice: Now that we have practiced a few of these words together, lets
play the game! You get your own marker and so do I. We will each take turns flipping
over the cards and saying the word that represents the picture. Do not forget to move your
marker to the correct space that has the beginning sounds you heard in your word!
Whoever gets to the end first wins! (We will play the game together, but I will not
scaffold my tutee on how she labels the picture and how she hears the blends, this is her
independent practice. I will return to scaffolding her on the sounds if I notice she cannot
recognize the r-blends correctly).

Discussion: What different beginning r-blends sound did we hear in our game today?
What were some of the words in our game that have the r-blend?

Closure: Alright, great job with this follow the path board game today! I am going to
hold up a few more of the pictures we used in our game today and I want you to tell me
what the pictures are. I also want you to tell me what beginning sounds you hear in each
of these words. (choose random 3 cards to show to my tutee). Thank you! Awesome job.
Be sure to look out for these different words in stories you might read in the future!
