Pakistan

Hannah Stewart
Site and Situation
Site: Most of Pakistan is hot and
desert-like. It has a temperate
climate in the northwest and a
colder climate in the mountains
in the northwest.
Situation: Southwest Asia.
Pakistan shares a border with
India, Iran, Afghanistan, and
China. It also shares a physical
border with the Arabian Sea in
the south.
Pakistan is in stage 3
of the demographic
transition model,
Pakistan's crude
birth rate is 23.76
births per thousand
people.
Its crude death rate
is 6.69 births per
thousand people.
with a low death rate and
a declining birth rate.
This leads to moderate
population growth and
suggests that the state is
an LDC, or less developed
country.
Pakistan is an
elongated state.
Its borders with Afghanistan
and Iran span about 3,000 km,
while its southern border
along the Arabian Sea is only
about 1,000 km.
This leads to communication
problems between the northern
and southern parts of the state.
Pakistan is a federal state.
Its laws are influenced by
Islamic beliefs.
Pakistan was ruled by Great
Britain as a part of India until
1947 when they were separated
by religion- Hindus in India
and Muslims in Pakistan.
The main languages in Pakistan are
Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Urdu.
English is a lingua Franca used by
elite and government officials.
96.4% of
Pakistanis
practice Islam.
54.9% of Pakistanis are literate,
which is a result of a failing
school system.
The literacy rate for men is 68.6%.
The literacy rate for women is 40.3%.
Pakistan's gross
domestic product is
$222.5 billion. Per capita,
this is only about $2,600.
America's per capita
GDP is $49,800
Pakistani rupee
This suggests a low standard of living and
high poverty rate.
