Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher in the 21
st
Century I believe that my role is to holistically prepare the children I
teach for the future. That is, I aim to promote a balance in the development of the whole
child as I know that learning is both continuous and interconnected across all aspects of a
childs development. I aspire to achieve this by providing the children I teach with engaging
opportunities to not only mentally engage with information, but to also cooperate and
collaborate with their peers, to reflect on their thoughts and feelings about their learning
and to identify why their learning is important.
I believe that learning is also about acquiring values and beliefs that will enable children to
mature into active global citizens. I will strive to create a peaceful classroom climate in
which the children I teach understand the importance of social justice and compassion so
that they can empathise with peers, family, community members and the global
community. This belief resonates closely with me, as my own school experience involved
valuing the act of being selfless and contributing to other peoples happiness, where we
were encouraged to listen with the ear of our heart.
I aim to create an environment where the children I teach can recognise that their learning
is relevant to the world they live in. I know that the use of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) provides students with engaging opportunities to make connections to life
beyond the classroom. In this way, I hope the children I teach can appreciate the
interconnectedness of the content within the curriculum, the community and the world and
can therefore acknowledge that learning is a continuous process. Thus, I value the
importance of children being active participants in their learning so that they know why and
how they can use the skills they learn in everyday life.
I appreciate that not one child is the same and consequently they will have different
learning needs. I understand that children learn in a variety of ways that might differ from
my preferred methods of teaching. Additionally, I acknowledge that students will flourish at
different times throughout their learning journey and will work towards reaching their full
potential in various multisensory ways. I will endeavour to know the children I teach and
know how they learn best; I will therefore aim to create learning experiences that endorse
multiple intelligences so that each child has an equal chance of experiencing success. Finally,
I will ensure that my assessment strategies are ongoing so that every child has the chance to
have their best work recognised and recorded; therefore, I value assessment for learning
where I will encourage the children I teach to continuously improve throughout their
learning journey.
