Unit Plan Lessons
Week 1
Day 1
Students will watch the teachers iMovie (http://www.apple.com/ios/imovie/?cid=wwa-
us-kwg-features-com&siclientid=6381&sessguid=9c013abd-9c1a-4e4c-a179-

f26b38cb2c82&permguid=9c013abd-9c1a-4e4c-a179-f26b38cb2c82) video that covers
this unit.
They will use this video and their e-Book to create flashcards for the main concepts and
vocabulary using iFlashcards (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/free-flashcards-study-
helper/id333253443?mt=8) app.
Day 2
Using MindMeister
(http://www.mindmeister.com/education?gclid=CMPXjJr3vb0CFVKIfgodhW8AgA)
students will categorize and organize the main concepts by constructing a mind map.
They will work with their table partner to complete this activity.
Day 3
Megan Ramos Curricular Unit EDUC 526
Azusa Pacific University Spring 2014 15

MindMeister
(http://www.mindmeister.com/education?gclid=CMPXjJr3vb0CFVKIfgodhW8AgA)
mind map will be completed and submitted to the teacher.
Students will go on Mangahigh.com (http://www.mangahigh.com/en-
us/math_games/shape) to assess the questions and implement their knowledge of
concepts. They will self evaluate their mistakes, and converse with their table members to
reflect on the game.
Day 4
On their computers, students will Visit website MathMistakes.org
(http://mathmistakes.org/?p=1630). They will determine the mistakes, and decipher what
should have been done to make this solution and its steps correct. They will takes notes
using Educreations (http://www.educreations.com/)
Once they have completed this independently, they will discuss their findings with their
table group. Collaborating, they will find their solution. The last ten minutes of class will
consist of a class discussion on the activity. One member of each group will report their
findings to the class, and the class will finalize the proper steps.
Day 5
Students will review what they have learned the last 4 days and complete any
assignments they have not yet submitted. They will make any corrections needed on their
previous activities, including MindMeister
Megan Ramos Curricular Unit EDUC 526
Azusa Pacific University Spring 2014 16

mind map.
If all of their previous activities have been completed and submitted, students can further
explore MathMistakes.org (http://mathmistakes.org/?p=1630) and Mangahigh.com
(http://www.mangahigh.com/en-us/math_games/shape)
to get more hands on practice. They can decide to work independently or collaborate with
their desk group.
Week 2
Day 6
Working with their table group (groups of 4) students will search Google Art
(https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/project/art-project) to select pieces that have
geometric shapes that we are covering in this unit. They will evaluate and determine their
geometric shapes and/or patterns while observing various art styles and artists.
They will use MindMeister
(http://www.mindmeister.com/education?gclid=CMPXjJr3vb0CFVKIfgodhW8AgA) to
organize their results. They will submit this to the teacher.
Day 7
Students will use their iPad and/or Computer for the entire project.
Students will work in groups of 4 to create and complete this WebQuest
(http://questgarden.com/166/26/2/140105142631/) project. At the beginning of class, the
Megan Ramos Curricular Unit EDUC 526
Azusa Pacific University Spring 2014 17

teacher will review the project using the WebQuest
(http://questgarden.com/166/26/2/140105142631/) site, and will specifically review the
rubric.
Groups will choose 4 different containers. Include at least 2 cylinders. Label each
container, i.e. A, B, C, D, or make unique names. They will show the teacher the
containers. They will use a note taking app, Educreations (http://www.educreations.com/)
to take notes on project and group discussion.
Day 8
Students will:
Individually calculate each containers volume in cubic inches. Show all work using
note-taking app Educreations (http://www.educreations.com/). (Remember to identify
which container you are calculating.) Discuss your results with your group. Work
together to make any corrections. Take notes in your note-taking app Educreations
(http://www.educreations.com/). You all should have the same results, and will use this to
make a chart on day 10.
Decide which object/liquid you will fill each container with. (Remember that you will be
computing volume in mL, which is equivalent to cubic centimeters.) Be creative.
Day 9
Megan Ramos Curricular Unit EDUC 526
Azusa Pacific University Spring 2014 18

Take video using iMovie (http://www.apple.com/ios/imovie/?cid=wwa-us-kwg-features-
com&siclientid=6381&sessguid=9c013abd-9c1a-4e4c-a179-

f26b38cb2c82&permguid=9c013abd-9c1a-4e4c-a179-f26b38cb2c82) of your group
filling up the containers. Find out and document the volumes in mL using a measuring
container (see Day 10). Check out these videos to get some ideas:
o Marshmallows (http://vimeo.com/61940417)
o Cylinder & Diet Coke (http://vimeo.com/54271005)
o Capacity (http://vimeo.com/54267758)
Day 10
Use Numbers (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/numbers/id361304891?mt=8) to create a chart
recording your findings. It should include the following:

Students will use Blogger (https://www.blogger.com/features) to reflect on their projects.
They should address the following questions:
o What surprised you in this project? Could any containers not handle it (spill
over)? Did it surprise you? Include examples from both your group's project and
some of your classmates'.
o What did you learn from this project? How will it effect how you use or purchase
containers in the future?
Students will publish their blogs. Students will comment to at least two of their peers
blogs using Blogger (https://www.blogger.com/features) consisting of feedback and
suggestions.
