1.1.1 Workstation Notes
Operating System
AVEVA Plant 12.1 is not supported on Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows Vista.
Linux, UNIX, and Mac OS X are not supported.
Hard Disk Requirements
The use of two SATA-300 RAID HDDs is recommended where projects are stored on the
local machine.
Although a full installation of AVEVA Plant 12.1 requires approximately 1GB of drive space,
extra capacity is required if you store project files and databases on the workstation. Please
contact your local AVEVA Support Office if you require more information.
Licensing
The FlexMan 5 license server and a license file in FlexMan 5 format are required for version
12.1; license files produced after J une 2010 are compatible with FlexMan 5 as well as
earlier license servers.
Graphics
To view Verified Graphic Reports, go to: Verified Graphics Card Reports.
Firewall
If Microsoft's Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is left enabled (default), it must be
configured to enable access to the database server and the license server.
Graphical User Interface
The AVEVA Design Platform (version 11.6 onwards) requires Arial Unicode MS font, which
is supplied with Microsoft Office (version 2000 onwards) and is usually installed
automatically when using Windows XP or later.
For further information, refer to http://office.microsoft.com/enus/help/
HP052558401033.aspx. If this font is not installed, some of the text in the user interface
may become illegible.
The layout of some GUI forms may also be adversely affected if the screen font size is not
set to the smallest size, which is usually default. This setting is accessed from the Control
Panel and is referred to as Normal in Windows XP or Smaller (100%) in Windows 7.
Microsoft Security Patches
Certain parts of the product will produce errors if Microsoft Security Patch NDP20-
KB928365- X86. exe is not installed.
Microsoft Visio 2007/2010 32-bit Standard edition (for AVEVA Diagrams)
Microsoft Office 2007/2010 32-bit (for Excel import/export, Schematic
Gateway and Reporting)

2 Server Configuration
AVEVA Plant 12.1 performs most of its work on the workstation, so the Server's main
function is to provide rapid and secure access to the Project files and databases.
Minimum System Requirements, based on 50 clients:
2.1 Server Notes
Operating System
AVEVA Plant 12.1 is not supported on Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows Vista. They
have been fully tested with Microsoft .NET version 3.5. See the section .NET Framework for
further information.
Linux, UNIX, and Mac OS X are not supported.
CPU
Multiple core processors will increase the performance for multiple workstations.
RAM
High performance, high capacity RAM will increase the performance for multiple
workstations.
Network
OS Windows Server 2003, 2008
(Windows Server 2008 R2 recommended)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
CPU Modern architecture multiple core processors recommended; the
number and performance of the cores will determine the capacity and
responsiveness of the server.
RAM 4 GB RAM. Additional RAM increases the caching capability and
thereby the performance.
HDD The amount of disk space should be configured according to the
customer's requirement based on the number and size of projects. To
secure data and improve performance, the use of RAID 0+1 or 5
storage is recommended; 15k rpm drives are preferred.
File System NTFS
Network Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) LAN. 64-bit capable network adapter.

3 AVEVA Software Installation
AVEVA Plant 12.1 is supplied on a DVD that also contains all of the User Documentation. It
is recommended that you carefully read this guide, and all of the Installation Guides, before
attempting to install the software.
3.1 Licensing AVEVA Plant 12.1
AVEVA 12.1 software requires access to a license file provided by the Flexman software
application. This license file can be stored on a networked server with client access, a
networked workstation with client access, or on the workstation on which the AVEVA Plant
12.1 software is currently loaded.
The reason for storing the license file on a server or shared workstation is that it allows
maximum user flexibility, while minimising the number of licenses that must be leased.
License files can be obtained through normal licensing sources.
3.2 .NET Framework Versions for AVEVA Plant 12.1
AVEVA Plant 12.1 and beyond uses Visual Studio 2008 and .NET 3.5 SP1 for .NET
Customisation.
Configuration files are created in the same directory as the application, and contain the
name of the application with a . conf i g extension. For example, an application called
myApp. exe may have a configuration file called myApp. exe. conf i g.
Further details of .NET application configuration files can be found at the following Microsoft
