ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardners Multiple Intelligences Goals: Learn more about archaeology during WWII. Learn how the topic of archaeology can be applied to situations and how we can learn things from them.
Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to understand the concept and topic of archaeology.
Process/Skills: Students will be able to understand how we can learn new things from uncovering WWII archeological artifacts.
Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to apply the knowledge they have learned about archaeology and WWII and apply it to their lives. ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardners Multiple Intelligences Rationale: It is important for students to begin to understand the behavioral sciences. Little known to most people, archeology is a part of this behavioral science. Students need to know how archaeology can be applied to social studies in ways other than what they usually think of it for (dinosaurs, etc.). Standards: State Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 18.C.3a Describe ways in which a diverse U.S. population has developed and maintained common beliefs (e.g., life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; the Constitution and the Bill of Rights). 18.C.3b Explain how diverse groups have contributed to U.S. social systems over time. National NCSS Themes Theme 2: Time, continuity, and change. Theme 3: people, places, and environment.
Logical/Mathematical Logical/Mathematical Students will take the data they have found on this website and choose one statistic that they would like to use. Students will then analyze the data and write a one paragraph paper on their analysis and their explanation. Verbal/Linguistic Verbal/Linguistic Students will look at pictures of items found by archeologists from the time period of WWII. They will choose one picture. They will then write a brief speech on what artifact is in the picture and what they think it was used for at the time. Musical/Rhythmic Musical/Rhythmic Students will study the process of archeology and they will then write a song based on the process of archeology. The song must give students information about archeology and WWII that most people do not know. Visual/Spatial Visual/Spatial Students will look at pictures of items from WWII found by archeologists. They will then choose five pictures and write questions about those pictures for their classmates to answer. (They will also write answers to the questions). The students will take turns answering each others questions. Body/Kinesthetic Body/Kinesthetic Students will look at pictures of items that have been found by archeologists during WWII. They will choose one photo. They will research about the item(s) in the photo and present their findings to the class. Interpersonal Interpersonal Students will look at a video about what archeologists have found from WWII. They will get into small groups and research an item they saw in this video. The students will make a poster with the information they have found. Intrapersonal Intrapersonal After learning about archeology and WWII students will write a two paragraph paper about what it would be like to be an archeologist and to find many articles that were other peoples in the past. They will reflect on how they would feel about unearthing history. Naturalistic Naturalistic Students will reflect and think about the role that archeologists play in helping find items that are buried in the earth. Students should think about whether they think the archeologists are helping or hurting the earth. Students will write a three paragraph paper on their beliefs.
