Achievement Objective: GM1-1: Order and compare objects or events by length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time by direct comparison and/or counting whole numbers of units. Class/Group/Level: NE/Yr 1 Date: THURSDAY J une 19 th 2014 Duration: 50 minutes
Preparation: 1. refer to NZ maths http://www.nzmaths.co.nz/resource/tricky-bags 2. 2 shopping bags: different weights
Resources: 15 shopping bags Learning I ntention: Learning to describe an objects mass
Key Competencies:
Thinking Problem solves
Using lang Symbols and Text Communicates knowledge and ideas
Participating & contributing Contributes as a group member
Station 1: Tricky bags LI: To describe the weight of objects SC: I can describe the weight of objects
Introduce topic of weight: how can we describe a feather? A brick? We are going to use these words to describe things today and when we describe weight we are also talking about the mass of something.
1. Display the two bags for the students to see. Are these bags the same or different? How do you know? Are you sure? 2. If no one suggests looking in the bags or lifting them ask for two volunteers to lift a bag each and describe what they feel. List the words that they use. 3. Let other students lift the bags and give their description. 4. Explain that although the size looks the same the mass is different. Which mass was greater/smaller? 5. Give pairs of students two supermarket bags and ask them to make up their own "tricky bags" 6. Remind them that they must put back what ever they put in the bags and not to over fill them- we want to the bags to looks the same. 7. Let the students share their tricky bags with other pairs of students. Remind them to describe what the bag feels like when they lift it. Can you guess by just looking which is heavy? 8. Back on mat- discuss experience

Key words: Heavier, lighter,
Key concept: Develop an awareness of what mass is, and of the range of words that can be used to describe it
Preparation: 3. refer to NZ maths http://www.nzmaths.co.nz/resource/tricky-bags 4. 2 large boxes one filled with something heavy
Resources: Two boxes
Station Two: Push and Pull In this activity we push and pull objects to see which feels heavier.
1. Show the students two large cartons. Are these cartons the same or different? How do you know? Are you sure? How could you find out? 2. Tell the students that the cartons are too large to be lifted and ask if they could think of another way of comparing them. The cartons are too large for you to lift safely. Can you think of another way of finding out how heavy they are? 3. Let the students take turns pushing or pulling the cartons. Do you think they are the same? Why? Why not? Which carton is heavier? How do you know? 4. Discuss the objects that the students have seen being pushed or pulled rather than lifted. List on board For example: beds, tables, television cabinet, couches. 5. Ask the students to draw a picture of one of these objects on the paper provided. Date and title Time:
