Abstract

This study explored people though whether brand names are expensive or not.
The researcher looked for people opinion about brand name. The observation
was conducted at Siam Paragon, looked for people who use brand name, which
walked, in the area. Survey was given for people who used brand name to ask
their opinion about brand name price. After observation and survey people dont
think that brand name are expensive. The limitation of this study is lack of
interest to do the survey from teenager participant, which is the most. Therefore,
this study suggests that people dont think brand name is expensive.

Introduction

Brands name are popular for Thai people. People think when they wear it, will look
cool, look good or smart. Some brands are very expensive, but many people still buy
them. People like to wear brands, because people think it will help them look good in
society and look high class. It is important to understand why people use brand name
clothing. By surveying the people that use brand name clothes around Paragon and
Siam in Bangkok, this paper will identify which brands are popular in Bangkok and
explain why people use brand name.

The brand names clothes are sewn by hand, piece by piece according to (Tamara
Harrell, No date, para.2), many designers buy material from the Fashion District in
New York (para.1), indirect costs are additional cost in designing a garment besides
the material (para.3), designers have an images, and they market to a certain
demographic (para.4), people have to pay for the name of the brand that will make
you look hi-so and rich(para.4).


Are expensive clothes worth it?

Americans spend $200 billion a year on clothing and footwear(Elisabeth Leamy,
Oct/6/2006,para.1), compared a $7 Hanes with a $95 T-shirt from Neiman narcus, its
same quality(Elisabeth Leamy, Oct/6/2006,para.1).



Methods

Observation

Observations were conducted on Saturday 20
th
April 2014. This observation
was observing people that use brand names at Food Passage Siam Paragon at 14.00-
15.00. I walked around the floor, looking for people that use brand names for
example, bags, belts and other accessories. Their age are about 15-20 years. This

observations will observe about which brand names that the most popular, and the
most of people use that brand.

Survey

I will survey the people who use brand names at Siam Paragon.
I will survey people that age around 16-25 years old. This survey will ask about are
brand names clothing expensive.

Participants

There were 26 women and 24 men. Those were surveyed because they used brand
names for example, belt bag, belt, accessory, or other brand-names things. For
observation, it was people that use brand-names at Siam Paragon.

Result


In this survey, I surveyed twenty-four men (48%) and twenty-six women (52%). The
total amount is 50 people (100%).
Out of all the people who completed the survey, there are 30 people who are 15-20
years old (60%), 18 people who are 21-25 (36%), and 2 people who are 26-30 (4%).
Participants that have brand name clothing from the total amount are forty people
(80%), and ten people dont have brand name (20%).64% have 6-10 pieces of brand
name. 24% have 1-5 pieces of brand name. Thirty people like brand name (60%), and

twenty participants dont like high-end products (40%). The brand name item that
people think is the most popular one is Herms. The second brand that is very well
known by consumers is Gucci. The third brand that is very well known by consumers
too is Louis Vitton. 8 people select other brand that not in this survey. Most of people
(66%) think that brand name isnt expensive.

In my observation, I choose people to observe by look for people who use anything
brand name. I observe for 36 people. This is a graph of my observation. Louis Vitton
is the most brand name that people use. Ferragamo is the least popular.

Implications

From the results of survey suggest that, people most of people have brand name and
most of them like brand name clothing. The results of the survey were surprising
because researcher think most of people would not like brand name because it is
expensive but the results are suggested most of people like brand name. It cant be
generalized because there was gender biased. More women participate in the research.
The interest result is Herms is the most that participants like. The research would be
improved if there is a question about worthiness to buy brand name.

Limitations
My limitations are first, some people may use the brand name but the surveyer didnt
recognize that it is brand name. Second, the researcher cant research the information
much about the topic on the internet and also book because the topic is about fashion
which there wasnt much of the academic research.
In the part of researcher limitations first, the problem was the time of surveying
because it was conducted in the early morning. Therefore, there werent much people
that use brand name. Second, sometimes, we dont know if the brand name is real or
copy.
In the observation part, first, somebody used the brand name that the researcher
dont know what brand it is. In the researcher limitation part, first, researcher went to
observe too early so there are not much people in that area. Second, the observation
was biased because the observer only look at the brand name bag and belt not
included other accessory.

Conclusion

This study set out to determine why people use brand names clothing. It is successful
due to the survey. Most of participant dont think that brand names are expensive. The
additional research can be about worthiness of brand name.
