The students will know the various parts of an insect and why they have wings by
constructing their own insect.

The students will need to have experience with crafting (ie. taping, gluing, and coloring).
They will also need to have a general idea about insects.

1. *Before you begin, make sure you cut two 3 slits on each side of the tube.
2. Have the students gather at the table outside.

carry out the lesson for you.)

3. Ask: What are some characteristics of insects? (open discussion).
4. Review that insects have wings, 2 antennae, 6 legs, and a body (which is also
known as the thorax).
5. Ask: What might insects use their wings for?
-Flying
6. Tell them: Unlike our arms, insect wings have no muscles or bones in them! To
fly, insects squeeze and flex muscles in their thorax to move their wings.
7. Show the students pictures of insects that have wings.
8. Hand out the materials for the craft as they examine the pictures of the insects.
9. First, have the students color the wing cut outs with the markers.
10. After they are done coloring the wings, have them cut out their wings.
11. Slide the wings through the slits of the tube.
12. Tape to connect the tops of the wings to the tube.
13. Gently squeeze the tube to move the wings!
14. Use pipe cleaners to create antenna (2) and legs (6) and markers to create
designs on the thorax!
15. Have the students write in their writing journal about what they learned about
insects.
16. Collect to assess their comprehension of the lesson.

Because insects are located throughout the world, the students will be able to relate back
to a familiar insect that they know has wings.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?

In the community, there are insects everywhere you look, especially in Florida.
Mosquitos, dragonflies, butterflies, and lady bugs are just a few of the popular insects
that live here.

The students will be creating their own insect using tubes, pipe cleaners, and cut outs of
wings to watch their wings flap.

Pictures or models of insects with wings
Pipe cleaners
Scissors
Tape
Teacher Tool: Insect Wings cut out

I chose these materials so the students would be able to physically create their very own
insect.
