Dungan literature: comments on the concept of folk
Soledad Jimnez Tovar
Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology Halle(Saale), Germany For decades, Dungan people have been portrayed by scholars as cultural living fossils. In this sense, Dungans seem to preserve Qing-Chinese culture. However, beyond compilations of folklore and ethnographic accounts that emphasise such Chinese-ness, there is not that much that has been done in order to contest such assumptions. This paper is meant as a provocation to the audience in the sense that it focuses in the very concept of folk and, taking Dungan case as an example, advocates for overcoming colonising approaches in the understanding of culture(s). : , . , , , - . , - , , , , . , , , ().
