Before Class
Have fun facts ready to go
Set up smartboard and powerpoint
Photocopy quiz
Have videos and ready to go
Greet students as they come in
INTRODUCTION (8 min) 8:03am
Prayer/ Scripture of the day (2 min)
-Blurb on Lent from book in class
What am I? (2 min)
Blood not funny Video
Agenda and Questions (2 min)
-Quiz
-Parts of the blood
-ABO blood groups
-Doctor, Doctor!

BODY 8:11am
Respiratory and Circulatory Quiz (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) (35-40 min)
-work on wordsearch, respiratory chapter questions, or digestive chapter questions.
Components of Blood (8, 9, 10) (35 min) 8:50am
*What are the four main components of blood? (10)
*What is in our blood that prevents us from bleeding to death? (10)
*How does blood help in gas transport? (11)
*How do scabs form? What causes blood to clot? (12)
*How does blood help us fight infections? (13)
(individually, partners, or groups of 3)
Hemophilia (15 min)-info on whiteboards
-A famous person with Hemophilia
-Fun fact
-What is the condition?
-What causes it?
-What is your blood made of?

Come back to class and review (people, condition, causes, and what is blood made of?)
-show video
What is blood? 2:23 www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRh_dAzXuoU
-Write down the 4 parts and their jobs (whiteboards)---BREAK
Info on EPO- 3 min- find and write down what you can (what it is, who uses it, what it does)
-go over whiteboards: key points-Athletes use it, increases number of red blood cells
(increases oxygen), blood gets thick, harder for heart to pump, heart is larger in athletes that use it because
your heart is a muscle and the harder it works the bigger it gets. (aka sludging)
What part of the blood are you lacking in hemophilia? (platelets- role is to help blood clot)
When you use EPO what part of the blood do you have too much of? (red blood cells)
Go over the 4 parts of the blood- Matching activity on whiteboards
a) platelets, b) plasma, c) leukocytes d) Erythrocytes
1) Which part would be involved with gas exchange?
2) Which part would cause blood to clot and scabs to form?
3) Which part would help fight against pathogens or infections?
4) Which part carries the cells in the blood?

ABO blood groups (25-30 min) 9:30am
*What are antigens and antibodies? (14,15)
*How do the ABO blood groups work? What antigens or antibodies are present for each blood type? (14)
*How do antigens/antibodies affect blood types with the Rh factor? (14,15)

-Whiteboards: What are the 4 different blood types? (pre assessment)
: What is an antigen/ what is an antibody? (best educated guess)
*go over what an antigen is and what an antibody does/is
*relate antigens/antibodies to blood types
-each blood type has certain antigens that act as markers/flags, and create antibodies that
will attack other types of cells.
-if you have A blood and you are given B blood in a shot, you produce antibodies that attack
B blood cells (they dont have the same antigens/markers as A blood cells)
VIDEO: Blood types with donuts and sprinkles (1:51-8:14)
-Draw a chart on the white boards to show which blood types can donate to others (Review as a class and fix
any hiccups)
-Make a good copy of the chart (blood types along top (donor) and bottom (receiver)- have to fill in which
antibodies would be produced and if blood could be received or not. *can draw the blood types if it helps
them conceptualize

Doctor, Doctor! (40 min) 10:00 am
-Go over assignment (what it is)
-Go over expectations (detail, form, effort)
-students can get a good start on it

CLOSURE 7 min (1,2,3,5,6,7) (10:40 am)
Whiteboards:
-Write two things you learned about blood (parts of it, blood groups, antigens/antibodies)
-Go around and share
***When done, clean off whiteboards, place them back at the front-markers away and tissues in the
garbage
