Routes
Te history of the Korean Catholic Church is alive
and well at Seouls Catholic pilgrimage routes, where
anyone, not just the religious, can learn about the
citys past and its many stories. Split into three courses,
the pilgrimage routes include the execution grounds
where Koreas early believers were interrogated and
tortured, as well as old seminaries and cathedrals where
visitors may learn about the history of Catholicisms
development in Korea.

Catholicism spread to Korea soon afer the publication of De Deo
Verax Disputatio in China in 1603, overcoming initial academic
curiosity and eventually becoming a faith. Yi Seung-hun was the
frst Korean to be baptized in 1784 in Beijing, receiving the name
Peter. Soon afer, Korean Catholicism sufered much persecution and
martyrdom, as Catholicism blazed a new trail in Joseon-era Korea,
a world that had been dominated by Confucianism.
Catholicism, which put God above kings, was regarded as a threat to
the royal authority and the ruling government by the Joseon Dynasty.
Eventually, the history of Korean Catholicism would witness a period
of intense persecution, giving rise to numerous martyrs in a short
period of time.
Seouls Catholic pilgrimage routes allow visitors to learn about the
history of the Korean Catholic Church and discover the stories within
this moment of great upheaval in Korean history as it confronted the
new world.
A Message from Pope Francis
I was pleased to learn that the Archdiocese of Seoul has proclaimed the
month of September 2013 the Month of Martyrs in commemoration
of those who laid down their lives for the gospel in Korea. I trust that
all who participate in pilgrimages during this month, aided by the
prayers and example of the martyrs, will deepen their communion
with the Lord Jesus Christ, so we might share in the inestimable gif
of eternal life. I pray that this occasion may be an opportunity for
pilgrims to rekindle the faith in their hearts and so commit themselves
more fully to the urgent task of evangelization. Entrusting all the
pilgrims to the powerful intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church,
and the prayers of the martyrs of Korea, I willingly impart his apostolic
blessing as a pledge of peace and joy in our Lord.

Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from March
13, 2013, to the present. Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio) was
one of five children born to railway workers of Italian descent in Flores, a
neighborhood of Buenos Aires in Argentina. The name Francis had never
before been used officially for a pope, but Pope Francis has indicated his
willingness to follow the example of St. Francis of Assisi, synonymous with
honesty, modesty, and simplicity. Whether in public or in private, Pope Francis
always appears frugal and modest, and calls especially upon generosity and
tolerance for the poor and other marginalized groups. He is widely known for
his devotion to and emphasis on opening dialogue between peoples of diverse
backgrounds and faiths.

The first of Seouls Catholic Pilgrimage Routes takes
off at Myeongdong Cathedral, passing through the
birthplace of Korean Catholicism, where the countrys
frst baptism took place. It is also a course that reveals
the true beauty of the 600 year-old city. Traversing the
epicenter of Seouls traditional quarters as well as the
citys most famous tourist areas including Myeong-
dong, Jongno and Dongdaemun, course no. 1 includes
the Cheonggyecheon (Stream), UNESCO World
Heritage Sites Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo
Shrine, and the recently opened Dongdaemun Design
Plaza. In addition, this course includes the Lef Podo-
cheong where numerous followers were tortured
and martyred, as well as the Hall of Saints of Jongno
Catholic Church, where the relics of 22 saints that
were martyred at the Lef Podo-cheong remain.

After becoming the first Korean to be baptized in Beijing,
Yi Seung-hun (baptismal name Peter) held the frst baptism
rites for the faithful in Korea at Yi Byeoks house, located
near Supyogyo Bridge during the winter of 1784. Yi Byeok
was given the baptismal name of John the Baptist, Jeong
Yak-yong was given the name John the Apostle, and Gweon
Il-sin, Francis Xavier. Koreas first community of faith was
thus created with young scholars at its center, through the
voluntary eforts of laymen. A stone marker was erected with
the inscription, Te Korean Catholic Church was established
at this site, during the winter of the 8
th
year of King Jeongjo
(1784), at Yi Byeoks house located in the vicinity of the
Supyogyo Bridge. The marker is expected to be relocated
to south of the Supyogyo Bridge sometime in the future
following the results of a thorough historical study.

Site of Kim Beom-us House
Kim Beom-u was Koreas first Catholic martyr, and his
house was used to hold services beginning at the end of
1784. Those who participated in these services became
known as the Community of Myeongryebang, but in the
spring of 1785 their gathering was discovered and the group
collapsed shortly after. Kim Beom-u, whose faith stayed

strong until the end, was exiled to North Chungcheong
Province and passed away afer receiving his last rites from
the afer-efects of torture.

Myeongdong Cathedral
(Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception)
Myeongdong Cathedral is the Cathedral Church for the
Archdiocese of Seoul and is both the symbol and the heart
of the Catholic Church in Korea. This beautiful cathedral
was built in 1898 on the land where the frst Korean Catholic
community was formed to symbolize the complete freedom
of worship that had been earned.
Since 1900, the remains of martyrs found in various parts
of the country have been transported to Myeongdong
Cathedrals catacombs to be enshrined. Presently the relics of
nine martyrs, including fve saints, have been consecrated in
the catacombs of Myeongdong Cathedral.

Located behind Seouls youthful and dynamic Daehangno
district atop a low ridge is the cradle of the next generation
of theologians that will lead the Korean Catholic Church. A
sense of peace, serenity and sacredness can be immediately
felt upon entering the campus, as if one had walked into
another world altogether. St. Josephs Seminary of the Catholic
University of Korea was the first seminary built in Korea
and was established in 1855 by Rev. Maistre at Baeron. Te
remains of Koreas frst priest, Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, are
also kept here.

Seokjeong Boreum Well
Te taste of water was so good at this ancient well in Bukchon
that it was even used by the royal palace. Tis unusual stone well
was called the boreum (fortnight) well, because its water was
clear for 15 days and murky for the next 15 days. Father James
Zhou Wen-mo, a Chinese and the frst foreign Catholic priest in
Korea, crossed the Yalu River on December 17, 1794, and began
to conduct his missionary activities in secret while hiding out in
Bukchon. It is believed that Father Zhou used the water from this
well for baptism as well as for drinking.

Site of the Left Podo-cheong
Te Lef Podo-cheong was the government apparatus in charge
of public order and crime prevention in eastern, southern and
central Seoul as well as the lef Gyeonggi administrative district
during the Joseon era. Afer the Catholics were discovered and
exposed at Kim Beom-us house in 1785, the task of tracking
down Catholics became one of the Left Podo-cheongs most
important duties. Many of the faithful were martyred during
the Catholic persecution by the Podo-cheong, but whether it
was the Left or the Right Podo-cheong that was responsible
is rarely specified in the official records. Most of the records
simply state that the followers were martyred at Podo-cheong.
Te site of the previous Lef Podo-cheong is now occupied by
the Jongno 3-ga Police Box, no doubt attesting to the enduring
role of the initial Podo-cheong.

Standing next to Jongmyo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, Jongno Catholic Church was recently acknowledged as
Podo-cheong Pilgrimage Church by His Eminence Andrew
Yeom Soo-jung, Archbishop of Seoul, Cardinal and de facto
Primate of Korea. Twenty-two out of the 103 canonized saints
that were martyred, including Francis Choe Kyong-hwan, Peter
Yu Tae-chol, Paul Ho Hyob, as well as fve of the 124 Servants of
God who are currently undergoing beatifcation including Paul
Yun Yu-il, were either fogged or hung to death, or passed away
while imprisoned at the Podo-cheong. However, since there
were not any shrines or other indicators of their martyrdom,
the Hall of Saints (Hyeonyanggwan) as well as a pilgrimage
information booth were installed at Jongno Catholic Church in
order to continually raise awareness for historical incidents and
the signifcance of the Korean Catholic Church.

crowded together in one area, selling
famous brands of cosmetics, clothing,
shoes, and accessories.
Cheonggyecheon
[Map C1~C3]
(Stream)
A stream 10.84 km long flowing from
Gwanghwamun to Dongdaemun,
the Cheonggyecheon was originally
a naturally occurring waterway that
was later covered with asphalt and
used as a road. However in 2005, the
Cheonggyecheon was reborn as an
ecological stream after three years of
restoration work. On display throughout
the trail along the stream are Joseon-
era relics that were discovered during
the restoration. There are 22 bridges
on the Cheonggyecheon trai l that
come alive at night with colorful lights.
Jongmyo Shrine
[Map B2]
UNESCO World Heritage Site
This is the Confucian shrine housing the
spirit tablets of the kings and queens
of the Joseon Dynasty. The shrine was
registered as a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in 1995 for having been the largest
wooden structure of the 14
th
century.
The Jongmyo Jerye, held annually in
May, is the worlds longest running
ancestral rite, which began in 1464 and
was selected in 2001 as a UNESCO
Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible
Heritage of Humanity. Free tours of the
shrine are available on Saturdays, and
guided tours are offered on other days.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza
[Map C3]
This new landmark in Dongdaemun
was designed by world-class architect
Zaha Hadid. The building boasts an
impressive outer exterior built with over
40,000 aluminum panels that are each
distinct from each other. A variety of
facilities devoted to design and leisure,
including the Design Museum, Design
Experience Center, Sky Lounge and
others have been installed.
Gwangjang Market [Map C2]
Open since 1905, this wholesale and
retail market specializes in textiles,
hanbok, beds, vintage clothing and
accessories. This market is one of the
best places to experience generous
portions of Korean street food such as
tteokbokki, gimbap, bindaetteok, and
jokbal at inexpensive prices.
Seoul City Wall [Map A3, B3]
This wall, which stretches for 18.6 km
around Seoul, was built at the founding
of the Joseon Dynasty. All of downtown
Seoul can be seen at a glance along
its trails, allowing visitors to revisit the
history and culture of ancient Seoul.
Visitors strolling the walls can also
observe gatehouses and floodgates
built during the Joseon era along the
path.
Changgyeonggung Palace [Map A2]
This royal palace, imbued with filial
piety, was built by by Seongjong, 9
th
king of Joseon, for his three dowager
queens. Visitors can enjoy the palaces
superb architectural beauty and the
history of the era after entering through
its main gate, Honghwamun.
Changdeokgung Palace

UNESCO World Heritage Site
The best preserved of the Joseon-
era palaces, Changdeokgung Palace
was built as a detached royal villa for
Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1405. The
palace was registered as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 1997 due to its
beautiful design, which achieves harmony
between nature and architecture.

Gye-dong, the location of the Bukchon Hanok Village, is where
the first Catholic missionary to Korea, Father James Zhou Wen-
mo, held Koreas first mass. Gahoe-dong Catholic Church, Gye-
dongs principal Catholic church, is quaint and beautiful, much
like Bukchon Hanok Village itself. Anyone may visit the churchs
rooftop garden, which also serves as the best viewing point of
Bukchon. Tis splendid view marks the beginning of this course,
which goes on to sites of past sufering. Te path leads to the site
of Hyeongjo and Right Podo-cheong, where arrested Catholics
were tortured and martyred, before passing by the site of Gyeonggi
Provincial Governors Ofce to Seosomun Martyrs Shrine, where
the most Korean martyrs were beheaded. The final destination
of the second course is the Jungnim-dong Yakhyeon Catholic
Church. Standing across from the Seosomun Martyrs Shrine, the
Yakhyeon Catholic Church was the frst Western-style church built
in Korea, and is responsible for maintaining the Seosomun Martyrs
Memorial Center. Te small cross-
shaped paths lead to an idyllic place
resembling a painting, where the
beautiful and peaceful Yakhyeon
Catholic Church can be a welcome
respite for those tired of the bustle
and noise of the city.

Gahoe-dong Catholic Church
Gye-dong, where Bukchon Hanok Village is situated, is a
historic area which witnessed the first mass in Korea held
by the first Catholic missionary to Korea, Father James
Zhou Wen-mo, as well as where members of the last Korean
royal family received their baptism. The official Catholic
church of Gye-dong, Gahoe-dong Catholic Church was
built with consideration of its unique historical and regional
characteristics, featuring a hanok with an external waiting
room and a large hall, along with a recently constructed
Western-style building that serves as the chapel. An exhibit on
the history of the Korean Catholic Church and Gahoe-dong
Catholic Church has been installed on the frst foor.

Site of Hyeongjo
Hyeongjo was the Joseon-era government body for
overseeing laws, lawsuits, punishment and other related
procedures. In 1785, nine years afer Jeongjo became king,
the people who had congregated at Kim Beom-us house
to worship were arrested and transferred to Hyeongjo.
Numerous other followers would be sent there later to

be investigated. Intense and harsh periods of persecution
and suppression happened throughout the 19
th
century,
including the Catholic Persecutions of 1801, 1839 and
1866, which sent many faithful believers and saints on the
road to martyrdom.

Te last generation of Korean martyrs died on this location.
In May 14, 1879, Father Deguette was arrested with the
faithful near Gongju in South Chungcheong Province,
when raiding constables suddenly barged in at dawn. Father
Deguette, along with the believers that resided with him,
were sent to the Gongju Provincial Ofce, where they were
imprisoned until being transferred to the Podo-cheong on
May 29. At the time, official persecution of Catholics had
come to an end, so the group did not experience harsh
physical torture, but starvation instead. Koreas last Catholic
martyrs Leo Yi Byeong-gyo, Paul Kim Deok-bin, and
Isidorus Yi Yong-heon eventually died of hunger.

Site of Gyeonggi Provincial Governors Office
The Gyeonggi Provincial Governors Office was where the
governor of Gyeonggi oversaw his administrative afairs. Afer
the establishment of the Korean Catholic Church in 1784,
the Gyeonggi region experienced a surge in the number of
followers. The regions community of faithful grew steadily
until it sufered a huge blow during the Catholic Persecution
of 1801. Te followers were taken to the Gyeonggi Provincial
Governors Ofce where they were punished and interrogated.
Jo Yong-sam, who was severely punished here, confessed his
beliefs and was martyred afer receiving his baptism.

Seosomun Historical Park
and Catholic Martyrs Shrine
Seosomun was one of four big and four small gates that
controlled access to Hanseong, the ancient name for Seoul
during the Joseon Dynasty. Outside of Seosomun was an
intersection that was also the official execution grounds
during the Joseon era. There was a market outside the
gates, so whenever corpses were transported through
the gates and out of the city, many people were alerted to
the fact. In 1984, a total of 103 Korean Catholic martyrs
were canonized en masse, a rare event in the history of
religion. Out of the 103 martyrs, 44 male and female
saints and numerous other believers were martyred at the
crossroads outside of Seosomun Gate. Great numbers of
pilgrims continue to visit the 44 saints commemorated at
the Catholic Martyrs Shrine, which was built so that their
deaths would not be forgotten.

Bukchon Hanok Village

Situated in between the Gyeongbokgung
and Changdeokgung palaces, there are
about 900 traditional Korean houses
(hanok) packed side by side in this village
where the Joseon-era royalty and nobility
used to reside. Seouls appearance from
past years has been well preserved here,
making it a popular filming location for
movies and dramas.

Traditional Korean architecture (hanok)
and modern buildings exist in harmony
here, creating a unique landscape
for visitors. The area is known for its
hanok, modern restaurants, wi ne
bars, galleries, designer and exclusive
boutiques, and themed museums.
Gyeongbokgung Palace

This was the first royal palace of the
500-year Joseon Dynasty. It is the
bi ggest and the most maj esti c of
Seouls five royal palaces, and visitors
will be able to get a glimpse of the
refined lifestyles of the Joseon Dynasty
as well as the architectural styles of the
time at Geunjeongjeon (the throne hall),
Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and others. This
is also the site of the National Palace
Museum of Korea, whi ch di spl ays
palace culture, and the National Folk
Museum of Korea, whi ch exhi bi ts
traditional Korean lifestyle.

this area is a grand plaza lying in front of
Gyeongbokgung Palaces main gates,

Seoul Plaza [Map B2]
This grass-filled square in front of Seoul
City Hall takes on many different forms
throughout the year. A variety of events
are held here every weekend, including
mini-concerts, outdoor exhibits, flea
markets and more. In winter, the plaza
is converted into a skating rink where
anyone may skate at a reasonable price.
Deoksugung Palace [Map B1]

Koreas modern history. It became a
historically significant location during
the establ i shment of the Korean
Empire. It is the most modern and
unique of Seouls palaces, featuring
a modern seal engraving, a Western-
style garden and fountains, and other
features that blend together traditional
and modern styles. A popular changing
of the royal guard ceremony takes
place every day in front of the main
gates of the palace.
Jeongdong-gil [Map B1]
Thi s area has a path that curves
a l ongs i de t he s t one wa l l s of
Deoksugung Palace. Jeong-dong was
host to the first Western consulates
in Korea, and traces of their beautiful
buildings still remain intact today. In
addition, the area is full of cultural
facilities such as the Seoul Museum of
Art, Jeongdong Theater, the Franciscan
Education Center and more.
Jeong-dong Observatory [Map C1]
This observatory is located on the 13
th

floor of Seoul City Halls Seosomun
Annex. All of Deoksugung Palace and
the Jeong-dong area, where the past
and modern Seoul coexist, can be seen
in one glance and appreciated here.
There is also a vintage photo exhibit of
Deoksugung Palace, Chungdong First
Methodist Church, Ewha Girls High
School and other important buildings
of Jeong-dongs past.
Seoul Museum of History

A special exhibition entitled Dongsomun,
Ode of Seosomun will be held to
commemorate Pope Franciss visit to
Seoul. The exhibition will be held at the
Special Exhibition Hall on the first floor
and will include collections from the
Vatican and St. Ottilien Archabbey. The
exhibition will highlight the history of the
persecutions and tribulations faced by
the Korean Catholic Church, with the
backdrop being Dongsomun, the most
frequently used gate of Seosomun on

Hongdae Street Korea Tourism Organization
The third and the longest of the pilgrimage routes
traverses Mallidong-gogae (Ridge), which reveals a
Seoul untouched by time, and passes through Itaewon
and on to Hangang Park. It is a long but excellent
course, allowing for a refreshing stroll along the
Hangang (River) and some of the most significant
martyrs shrines in Seoul. The course passes through
Danggogae Martyrs Shrine and Waegogae Shrine,
where ten martyrs were buried for decades. Aferwards,
it goes through Saenamteo Martyrs Shrine, where
Koreas frst foreign Catholic priest, Father James Zhou
Wen-mo, was executed. The last location is Jeoldusan
Martyrs Shrine, whose splendor can be seen from
afar. The Korean word jeoldu means to truncate, and
Jeoldusan came to mean the place where Catholics
were beheaded because so many followers of the faith
were killed here. The site features the splendidly built
Jeoldusan Memorial, which holds the relics of 27
saints and one unidentifed martyr in its catacombs, as
well as the Martyrs Museum, which exhibits various
information and artifacts. Tis shrine attracts countless
pilgrims from both Korea and abroad.

Located in Jungnim-dong, Yakhyeon Catholic Church became
a parish church under the governance of the Archdiocese of
Seoul on November 9, 1891. It is Seouls second consecrated
parish church the first being Myeongdong Cathedral
and responsible for the upkeep of the Seosomun Catholic
Martyrs Shrine. Tough smaller than Myeongdong Cathedral,
Yakhyeon was the frst Catholic church to be built in Korea, as
well as being the nations frst Gothic church. Due to the lack
of skilled labor and resources, the church is a compromise
between Romanesque and Gothic styles, and its main
structure and form have been kept rather simple. However, the
concise arched pillars of the church and its round stained glass
windows seem to become more antique and beautiful as time
passes. Yakhyeon Catholic Church was designated a national
historic landmark a rare distinction for Korean churches.
Located inside the church grounds, the Seosomun Martyrs
Memorial Center displays the catechisms and devotional
books that were used by Korean Catholic martyrs during
the early period of the four waves of persecutions, the family
tree of the Seosomun martyr Kang Wan-suk, and various
documents lef behind by visiting French missionaries.

they requested that it be moved elsewhere, because their sales
from the large end-of-the-year fair would be impacted. Tus,
the execution grounds were moved to Danggogae. Among the
executed were three mothers with young children, so the site
is also referred to as Mothers Shrine.

Danggogae Martyrs Shrine
A great number of Korean Catholics were martyred at
Danggogae. On the day before Lunar New Year in 1839, the
Catholics that had survived a year-long persecution were to

Waegogae is currently occupied by the Military Ordinariate
of Korea, which serves the armed forces. During the Gihae
Persecution of 1839, the heads of Bishop Saint Laurent-Joseph-
Marius Imbert, Father Pierre Maubant, and Father Jacques
Chastan were displayed at this site. Later in 1866, during the
Byeongin Persecution, Saint John Nam Jong-sam, Saint Choe
Hyeong, Tomas Hong Bong-ju and others were buried in secret
here after being martyred at the execution grounds outside of
Seosomun Gate. Previously, Waegogae had been occupied by a
Joseon-era government ofce that supplied tiles and bricks for
nearly fve centuries. It is said that this ofce provided the bricks
that were used to build both Myeongdong Cathedral and the
Yakhyeon Catholic Church in Jungmin-dong.

Saenamteo Martyrs Shrine
Saenamteo Catholic Church Martyrium is a large, traditional
Korean tile-roofed house that can be seen from trains passing
through Yongsan Station on subway Line 1. Saenamteo was a
site used for executing felons since the early Joseon era. Te
Chinese Father James Zhou Wen-mo was martyred here in
1801 during the Sinyu Persecution, and during the Gihae,
Byeongo, and Byeongin persecutions 11 clergymen and
three church leaders were martyred, including Saint Andrew
Kim Tae-gon. Nine of these martyrs are enshrined at this
memorial, where can be seen a video that tells the martyrs
stories and also an exhibition that explains how the torture
chamber was operated.

Hyochang Park [Map B3]
This public park, located in Yongsan-
gu, features walking trails, an ecological
forest and a stadium. Originally, the site
housed a royal tomb for Crown Prince
Munhyo, the son of King Jeongjo, and
was called Hyochangwon, but was
later turned into a park during the period
of Japanese rule. At present, Hyochang
Park is the resting place for members
of the Provisional Government of the
Republic of Korea and some of Koreas
leading independence activists and
patriots, including Kim Koo. Kims life and
accomplishments are on display at the
Kim Koo Museum and Library, offering
visitors a glimpse into the struggles of
Koreas contemporary history.

The park is popular all day long for its
walking trails along the refreshing blue
Hangang.
Hongdae Street

Hongdae is a youthful and vibrant
neighborhood due to the culture of
nearby Hongik University, a school
famous for its art program. Visitors can
have their fill of shopping, leisure, and
culture, all at Hongdae. At night, many
amateur bands perform in the public
spaces around the area.

Jeoldusan Martyrs Shrine
Jeoldusan, formerly called Jamdubong Peak because of the
mountains resemblance to the head of a silkworm, is among
the most significant historic sites for the Korean Catholic
Church. Hundreds of Catholics were executed here during the
most severe period of persecutions: the Byeongin Persecution
of 18661873. So many Catholics lost their heads here
that the site became known as jeoldu (to truncate) and san
(mountain). Te Jeoldusan Martyrs Museum, located on the
same grounds, is known for enshrining the largest number of
Korean martyrs, including the remains of the countrys frst
bishop, Paul Noh Gi-nam. Te Jeoldusan Martyrs Shrine is a
holy site that is visited by many pilgrims from both Korea and
abroad.

Catholic Church
1784 > Yi Seung-hun returns from Beijing after receiving his baptism and
establishes the faith. The Community of Myeongryebang is established
with Yi Byeok, Jeong Yak-yong, and Kim Beom-u.
1785 > Kim Beom-u becomes the first Korean Catholic martyr when the services
held at his home by the Community of Myeongryebang are discovered
by the authorities.
1791 > Sinhae Persecution. This began when Paul Yun Ji-chung burned the
ancestral tablets of his mother after she passed away.
1794 > Arrival of the first Catholic priest in Korea, Father James Zhou Wen-mo,
of Chinese origin.

1836 > Kim Tae-gon, Choe Yang-eop, Choe Bang-je are sent to Macau to study.
1839 > Gihae Persecution. A total of 114 are martyred, including three
missionaries and Paul Chong Hasang.
1845 > Father Andrew Kim Tae-gon, the first Korean to be ordained a priest,
returns to Korea.
1846 > Byeongo Persecution. Ten are martyred, including Andrew Kim Tae-gon.
1849 > Father Choe Yang-eop returns to Korea after becoming a priest.
