Baithi Martyrs Shrine VISIT THE CATHOLIC S I TE S I N Korea In Commemoration of Pope Francis' Visit to Korea Jeondong Catholic Church Catholicism in Korea began with a group of Joseon Dynasty (13921910) scholars academic interest in Catholic books like Cheonjusirui (De Deo Verax Disputatio) published in China, in the early 17th century, late Joseon. In 1784, Peter Yi Seung-hun became the first Korean to be baptized. After his baptism in Beijing, Yi returned to Joseon and founded a Christian community. With this historical event, the Catholic Church in Korea was established. This is when Catholicism had its beginning as religion in Joseon. The growth of the Catholic Church in Korea was not easy at the time, as Confucianism was highly dominant. The places introduced in this booklet are proof of how much the faithful and the Catholic Church suffered and were ruthlessly persecuted for more than 100 years until the late 19th century, when freedom of religion was finally granted. Despite persecution, Christians continued to unite and form communities across the country, persistently spreading Catholicism in Korea. Today, there are about 5.44 million Catholics in Korea. Due to His Holiness Pope Francis honorable visit to Korea, this booklet introduces major Catholic sites in Korea and nearby attractions along with the Popes itinerary.
