Description:
The ma2or focus of this course is to e3#ose students to design #rocess+
research and anal'sis+ teamwor"+ communication methods+ glo!al and
human im#acts+ engineering standards+ and technical documentation. $%&
gives students the o##ortunit' to develo# s"ills and understanding of course
conce#ts through activit'-+ #ro2ect-+ and #ro!lem-!ased (APP- learning.
4sed in com!ination with a teaming a##roach+ APP-learning challenges
students to continuall' hone their inter#ersonal s"ills+ creative a!ilities and
understanding of the design #rocess. $t also allows students to develo#
strategies to ena!le and direct their own learning+ which is the ultimate goal
of education.
ecause $%& is an entr' level course+ a !ac"ground in %ngineering isn5t
necessar'. &uring the 'ear+ students will em#lo' engineering and scientific
conce#ts in the solution of engineering design #ro!lems. $n addition+
students use a state of the *& solid modeling design software #ac"age
(Autodes" $nventor- to hel# them design solutions to solve #ro#osed
#ro!lems. Students will develo# #ro!lem-solving s"ills and a##l' their
"nowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges
that increase in difficult' throughout the course. Students will also learn how
to document their wor"+ and communicate their solutions to their #eers and
mem!ers of the #rofessional communit'.

$ntroduction to %ngineering &esign6 is one of three foundation courses in
the Pro2ect 7ead The 8a'
9
high school #re-engineering #rogram. The
course a##lies and concurrentl' develo#s secondar' level "nowledge and
s"ills in mathematics+ science+ and technolog'.
Course Goals: %ngineering #rograms must demonstrate that their students have
attainment of A%T+ $nc. re:uirements at the !asic educational level for
entr' into engineering #ractice;
A. an a!ilit' to a##l' "nowledge of mathematics+ science+ and engineering
. an a!ilit' to design and conduct e3#eriments+ as well as to anal'<e
and inter#ret data
/. an a!ilit' to design a s'stem+ com#onent+ or #rocess to meet desired
needs within realistic constraints such as economic+ environmental+
social+ #olitical+ ethical+ health and safet'+ manufactura!ilit'+ and
sustaina!ilit'
&. an a!ilit' to function on multi-disci#linar' teams
%. an a!ilit' to identif'+ formulate+ and solve engineering #ro!lems
=. an understanding of #rofessional and ethical res#onsi!ilit'
>. an a!ilit' to communicate effectivel'
H. the !road education necessar' to understand the im#act of
engineering solutions in a glo!al+ economic+ environmental+ and
societal conte3t
$. a recognition of the need for+ and an a!ilit' to engage in life-long
learning
?. a "nowledge of contem#orar' issues
@. an a!ilit' to use the techni:ues+ s"ills+ and modern engineering tools
necessar' for engineering #ractice.
Classroom
rocedures:
e on time and #re#ared for class. This includes+ !ut is not
limited to having 'our note!oo"+ assignments+ #enA#encil+ and
#a#er. Students should !e seated at their wor"station and logged
in to their com#uters when the tard' !ell ringsB and should consult
the classroom we!site for dail' instructions.
Have a good attitude a!out learning. e #re#ared to actively
#artici#ate in class. Acce#t feed!ac" with a #ositive attitude.
Students will follow all written and oral directions as well as safet'
#recautions. This is for 'our own safet' as there will !e hands-on
activities that ma' involve dangerous tools or materials.
/om#lete all assignments in a timel' fashion. Cou must wor"
diligentl' to sta' caught u#.
e res#ectful of others and their #ro#ert'.
Ta"e care of the learning environment. @ee# 'our area neat and
clean. Alwa's clean 'our s#ace !efore 'ou leave for the da'.
Put materials awa' in their #ro#er #lace.
/heating will not !e tolerated. Students found cheating will
receive a <ero for that assignment+ and will lose 10 #oints from
their em#lo'a!ilit' grade (integrity categor'-. Dr. Hollingsworth
andAor school will decide an' further course of action.

Grades: Student wor" will !e evaluated and graded in a variet' of wa's. Dost
#ro2ect-!ased assignments will !e graded using ru!rics+ which will !e
made availa!le to students at the outset of the assignment. Practice
wor" designed to strengthen s#ecific s"illsets will t'#icall' !e graded for
com#leteness rather than accurac'. Hui<<es and tests will !e graded

Student grades will fall into one of four distinctl' weighted categories+
each constituting a #ercentage of a student5s overall grade;
Ma+or Grades I *JK of overall gradeB two to three #er grading #eriodB
#ro2ects+ tests
Minor Grades I 2JK of overall gradeB ten to twent' #er grading #eriodB

-n(ineerin( .oteboo" I 20K of overall gradeB one #er grading #eriodB
calculated using the engineering note!oo" ru!ric (see we!site-
There is a s#ecial #olic' with regard to minor grades that is worth noting;
a student who is not missing an' minor grades in a grading term will
have their lowest minor grade dro##ed. Students ma' :ualif' to have
more low minor grades dro##ed !' com#leting additional assignments
throughout the 'ear.
Additional ma2or grade assignments ma' also !e made availa!le to
students during the 'ear+ !ut low grades in this categor' will not !e
dro##ed.
/0ere is a $ear#end e1am. Cear-end grades are calculated !'
averaging each nine-wee"s grade and the e3am grade (five grades
