COURSE INFORMATION
Food Science and Nutrition is a one trimester course designed to explore basic concepts in cooking as well as an in-
depth look at nutrition. Students will cook in the lab approximately once per week.

GRADING
Grades are earned, not given! Points will be awarded based on effort. At the end of the course, total points will be
converted to a final percentage, which will determine the final grade. The grading scale is as follows:
A 94-100
A- 90-93
B+ 87-89
B 83-86
B- 80-82
C+ 77-79

C- 70-72
D+ 67-69
D 63-66
D- 60-62
E- 59-0
Homework and classwork, presentations and projects, cooking labs, tests, and quizzes, will be worth 20%
each. The final exam is worth 20% of the overall grade.

ABSENT POLICY
It is your responsibility to figure out what you missed while you were absent. Check the daily planner to find
out the agenda, and you will find any handouts with your name already written on them to complete. You
have double the length of your absence to turn in your assignment for full credit (i.e. absent 1 day, 2 days to
complete assignments. Absent 2 days, 4 days to complete assignments). Absences must be excused to
make up work. Tests must be made up before school within 3 days of the absence.

LATE WORK POLICY
If an assignment is not turned in at the beginning of the period on the day it is due and collected, an
automatic 30% penalty applies.

LAB CONDUCT
Students are expected to follow all policies, procedures, and safety precautions while cooking in the lab,
which will be extensively discussed in class.
PLEASE NOTE: Refrigerators are NOT for student use. Only materials used in cooking labs may be placed
in the refrigerators. Microwaves may NOT be used unless they are needed during a lab.

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES
Students must immediately find their seats upon entering the room and begin working on the
bellwork activity.
All purses, bags, and backpacks must be placed under the students desk for the entire class
period. Only materials related to the class (i.e. binder, pencil, pens, etc.) should be out at any time.
Unless the activity calls for it, students should remain in their seats for the duration of the period.
Cell phones and other personal electronic devices are not tolerated in my classroom and should not
be seen or heard at any time unless the activity specifically calls for phone use. 1

Every student will feel safe in my room. Disrespect, teasing, harassment, or maltreatment of any
kind is not acceptable, and will result in disciplinary action.
Food or drinks are not permitted in the classroom. Of course, water is welcomed (and
encouraged).
Bathroom needs should be taken care of during passing time. If you are afraid you might be late to
my class because of using the bathroom, stop by and let me know before the bell rings. I will make
sure not to mark you tardy. In order to make sure that students do not miss critical instruction and
manage their time wisely, bathroom passes are not given during the first or last 15 minutes of
class. Once 15 minutes have passed, students should raise their hand and ask to use the restroom.
Only one student may be out of the room at any time.
I dismiss the class, not the bell. Remain in your seat until I have dismissed you. Lining up at the
door is not permitted.
Be part of the classroom community. All students can learn from one another by sharing. Do not
hesitate to participate in discussion
I follow ALL policies in the student handbook.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

Students should come prepared each and every day with a writing utensil, textbook, and their binder.
Binders will be randomly checked for completion of work and organization. Binders may NOT be kept in the
classroom.
