Algebra I

The following are requirements for success in this course:

I. Attendance/Tardiness/Discipline: The NVHS Handbook will be
followed and enforced.

II. Responsibility: You are responsible for any and all work missed due to excused absences, including field trips, on
the day its due. Work missed due to unexcused absences will receive an automatic zero. Late work will receive partial
credit.

III. Preparation: Completion of ALL homework is essential. Being prepared gives you the opportunity to succeed on
tests and quizzes. Not being prepared leads to poor performance and missing points. Daily materials: notebook, folder,
pencils, and graphing calculator.

IV. Participation: You are expected to participate in discussions and group work, answer when called upon, and be
attentive to material being presented.

V. Respect: Respect the opinions and input of your classmates, their goals, and the goals of the teacher.

VI. Pride: Autograph everything you do with excellence! Take ownership of the things you produce, the knowledge you
acquire and the skills you learn.

VII. Honesty: The NVHS Academic Honesty Policy is followed.

VIII. Technology: All Algebra students are required to purchase a TI-83+ or TI-84+ calculator and bring it to class
daily.

IX. Help: I am available everyday before school at 6:30am in G179 and after school only by appointment. I strongly
encourage you to visit the Academic Resource Center located in H114 across from the cafeteria.

X. Evaluation:
Grade Breakdown:
Assignments : 25%
Assessments: 55%
Final: 20%

Daily Assignments and Homework:
Homework assignments will either be worksheets or will be completed through an online program called
MathXLforschool. We will usually schedule at least one day per unit in the lab to work on MathXLforschool.

You must register and enroll in your instructors course by going to www.mathxlforschool.com. We will do
this during the first few days of class and familiarize you with the program.

MathXLforschool grades your homework on accuracy. Therefore, you have to get the question correct in order
to receive points. When an assignment is late, MathXLforschool automatically deducts points.

Late Assignments and Make-up work:

If you are absent for any reason it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.

Quizzes & Tests:

All quizzes and tests must be done in pencil!

Quizzes and tests will cover material that has been discussed in class, material presented in handouts along with
material from MathXLforschool. I do expect you to be able to take ideas from each unit and apply them to new
situations. The tests and quizzes will be composed mostly of free response questions, and you will be expected to
show all of your work on your exams. There will be frequent multiple choice quizzes to make sure you are
understanding the materials.

Unless you are told otherwise, all quizzes/tests are closed notes. You must visit the testing center during your option
period to make up missed assessments. If an absence is unexcused, any make-up work will be disallowed and you
will receive zero credit. Calculator memories may be cleared on exam days.

Math Intervention Program, by invitation only
In an effort to provide students who are struggling in their current Math course with more opportunities of success,
NVHS has initiated the Math Intervention Program (MIP). MIP is designed to help increase the students likelihood of
passing the math course. A student will be required to attend MIP if one or more of the following occur. A student:

Receives a near failing or failing grade in the class.
Receives a D or F on mid-unit or end of unit assessments given in the math class.

Once a student qualifies for MIP, he or she is required to meet with a math instructor during the students option period
for the allotted time set by their MIP instructor. In order to exit MIP, the student must show proof of mastery on
material from the assessment. The MIP teacher will keep attendance records and all attendance rules in the student
handbook will apply. When a student retakes a mid-unit test or end of unit test, the highest possible score he or she may
receive is a 71%, this replaces the failing test score.

Participation in the MIP does not guarantee an increased or passing grade for the current math course. However, it is
our hope that the extra help provided in conjunction with the students increased efforts and proof of mastery over
previously missed objectives will increase the likelihood of a passing grade.
