STUDIO PRACTICE 1 (Basic Drawing)
Overview of the Course
This is a double period, required foundation course in drawing taken by all entering students in fall term of
their frst year. Students will lean to draw from observation utilizing various techniques and materials.
They will explore a variety of subect matter. !isual observation and responsive mark"making are the
foundation of basic drawing skills. Students will be required to assess their own work and discuss the
work of others in oral class dialogue and through writing. Students will also analyze informational texts
relating to art. #n addition, students will visit a museum visits, write a corresponding reports and create a
fnal portfolio of their most signifcant work. #t is in line with $ommon core Standards by preparing them
for post"secondary art related studies and twenty"frst century careers in the arts related industries.

Students will develop the ability to 0see1 and to draw what they see.
Students will gain mastery in a variety of processes and materials in drawing.
Students will be able to apply the elements and principals of design to their work and the art of others,
developing visual literacy.
This course will also serve as an introduction to art history.

Sometimes we have a need for a silent studio and other times a collaborative studio. /uring a
silent studio we need to have silence so all can concentrate Cif you are talking, your focus is not
on your workE. /uring a collaborative studio, there is a need for getting feedback from your
peers.

.arm up( 8 points. Short re;ection or sketch done at the beginning of class
@roects( )JJ points. The bulk of what we do. ,ostly done in class, unless you need more time.

'll proects have a due date. # will give you a probable due date at frst, and then assess if the
class needs more time a few days before the proect is due. Sometimes # will push back a due
date if more than 8JK of the class needs more time. # will usually allow a few extra days to
fnish at home before # collect the proect. >owever, when # set the fnal due date, it is frm.
'fter the due date, late work is worth 8JK.
