What do you think of when you hear the
word wave?
Write a brief description in your science
notebook of what you think a wave is
How can we describe a wave?
A Wave is disturbance that transfers
energy from 1 place to another
Lets Review Key Terms
Medium: the matter a wave passes through
Amplitude (height): the distance a medium
rises or falls from its resting point
Wavelength: the distance from any 1 point
on a wave to an identical point on the next
weave. This measures the length of 1 cycle

Longitudinal vs. Transverse
Waves

Surface Waves
A combination of
transverse and longitudinal.
An example is an Ocean Wave: As a wave
travels through the medium (water), the
particles of that medium travel in clockwise
circles.
As a wave heads into shore, the top of the
wave is free but the bottom of the wave
becomes constricted, causing the waves crest
to build. Eventually the water is unable to
support the wave and it breaks
Lets watch and see how a waves
crest builds

Parts of a Wave
The wavelength, , of a wave is the
distance from any point on one wave to
the same point on the next wave along

Parts of a Wave
The amplitude, a, of a wave is the
distance from the centre line (or the still
position) to the top of a crest or to the
bottom of a trough. Measured in meters
Parts of a Wave
The frequency, f, of a wave is the number
of waves passing a point in a certain time.
We normally use a time of one second, so
this gives frequency the unit hertz (Hz),
since one hertz is equal to one wave per
second
