Assignment 1: Information Literacy

1) Current even article: http://techcrunch.com/2014/09/19/keyboard-apps-dominate-the-app-
stores-top-charts-after-ios-8-release/

2) Summary
For the current event article, I chose a topic in mobile technology. Google was used as the search
engine. The article is about new keyboard apps for the new iOS8. Since the iPhone has come out,
customization has been limited by it's iOS. With the new iOS8, a few limitations has been lifted. Which
is why the market for a fresh looking keyboard is in such high demand. These keyboard apps have been
dominating the app store. There have been three keyboard apps in the top five since the upgrade.
Depending on which keyboard app you use, you can either change themes/colors of your keyboard or
use the new(to iPhone users) swyping method of texting. There are free keyboard apps as well as
paid, but be wary. Read the fine print as some already existing keyboard apps are out to con you. The
apps out to con you have existed previous to the update because they do not truly change the
customization of your iOS; Meaning that they only work in their seperate app, apart from the
messaging app itself. I felt this was an important topic to cover with the new iOS and iPhones coming
out.

3) Relative searches completed on different search engines
1) Bing: http://mashable.com/2014/09/17/ios-8-keyboard-apps/
2) Yahoo: http://bgr.com/2014/09/18/ios-8-install-and-use-keyboard-apps/
3) The two searches proved to be very similar to each other. I cannot say which is truly better as the top
results were identical. Search engines are also favorited more by preference rather than efficiency.

4) TRAAP
1) Google article:
1) September 19
th
, 2014
2) The keyboard app article is only relative to mobile technology, as apps are software for it.
3) Sarah Perez. She has spent three years at ReadWriteWeb becoming a professional blogger, and now
writes at TechCrunch. Before that, She worked numerous I.T. Jobs
4) The information is accurate, as I too have looked into these keyboard apps to purchase for myself.
5) The purpose of the article is to inform. The information is straight forward, cautioning iOS8 users to
take pleasure in the apps, but not to buy the con apps
2) Bing article:
1) September 17
th
, 2014
2) This article lists six seperate keyboard apps with info to customize your iOS8 with.
3) Karissa Bell. She has a degree in journalism and has written about tech and gadgets for WIRED,
Macworld, and The WireCutter. Currently, she writes for Mashable.
4) The information is trustworthy. I have looked through these apps myself.

iOS8 keyboard.
3) Chris Smith. He wrote about tech and gadgets as a hobby before being hired by BGR.
4) Smith informs the readers that the third party keyboard apps are full access, and that this is a
potential security risk as the app has access to things that you type into it. This is true, but can be
handled by controlling what you type into the apps.
5) This article is informative. Smith goes into detail on how to install certain apps after downloading
them and links other pages withing BGR to lists of the keyboard apps themselves

3) I used ProQuest because it was number one on the top five databases list.
6) Internet to journal articles comparison
1) Ease of access The internet articles were much faster to access. All I had to do was go to a search
engine, type in what I wanted to research, and pick an article. With the CCBC databases, I had to go to
the CCBC website, click through a tab, click on another tab, select a database, switch my search to
journal article, type in the topic I wanted to research, then pick an article.
2) The above description depicts the Timeliness in the article research. The process of actually getting
to a list of articles through a CCBC database was lengthier than just typing into an internet search
engine.
3) Although the authority of the CCBC databases was sound, I could not research the specific topic I
was interested in, which was iOS8 keyboard apps. I had to research into a broad topic on mobile
technology about the activity contradictions with their use. Internet searches allow you to research
anything, with the slight risk of running into an unreliable author.
