Apples iOS8 Release
The first article I found concerning Apples release of their new software, iOS8,
was from CBS news. The new software was released for download today, September
17, 2014, for iPhone 5 and iPad users. The article talks about the new features
available with the update and discusses what users should know before downloading.
Some of the features users can look forward to will be Apple Pay (compatible with the
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus- due to come out in a few days), a more convenient way to tend to
ones notifications, different shortcuts related to the home button, and more. The
software is said to be more adaptive to the way people speak, and to have even nicer
photo editing tools than iOS7. The article also discusses that is not recommended that
users with older Apple products download the software, because it may cause
performance issues- such as the ones that occurred last year with the previous update.
In order to find my second and third article, I used Google and Yahoo. To no
surprise of mine, both search engines had Apples website as the first option. From
Google, I chose Apple's page for its newest update. The page itself has an overview of
all the new features and various links, which I followed to learn about the iOS8 update.
In addition to the features I found in the CBS article, I found more about new, highly
desired messaging features, access to recent contacts, and the keyboard update,
allowing it to guess the users next word in the sentence. From Yahoo, I visited an ABC
News page, which described what iOS8 was, what devices were compatible, and how
to install the update. It tells users what to expect, and there is an actual video news clip
concerning the topic. In comparing the search engines used to locate these articles,
Google located the information slightly faster than Yahoo did. However, when Yahoo

opened the link, it automatically opened to a new window, making it easier to go back to
my search. Yahoo also provided me with more options for time limits (for how long ago
the article would be searched from) which is useful for a project such as this, where I
was looking for a limited time window of thirty days. Altogether, and surprisingly, I
preferred the Yahoo search engine for this search.
ABC News Article:
Time- This article was written on September 17, 2014. It has not been updated.
Relevance- It is very relevant to the broad topic of the update and informs users
how to install, but may be irrelevant for those that want to know about the actual
features of iOS8.
Authority- The writer, Alyssa Newcomb, appears to be a qualified source for this
information. She is a digital reporter, with a Masters in Mass Communication and
Broadcast Journalism. Her credentials are favorable, and she has written many articles
relating to Apples products and software.
Accuracy- The information is trustworthy and can fact-checked using other
articles.
Purpose- The article was written to inform and shows no bias toward the subject,
only instruction on how to use it, public reaction, and quotes from the company.
To find information about my topic on the databases, I used apple update as
the key phrase. I used the LexisNexis Academic and Humanities International Complete
& Academic Search Premier databases. I chose Lexis Nexis because the description

included recent news stories and the update occurred this week, meaning it was
definitely recent and I was likely to find it there. I chose the other database used
because it had a broad description (providing hundreds of journals, eBooks, and other
published sources) and could possibly have my topic.
The internet articles were far easier to access than the Journal articles, because
the internet is updated so often and because the topic is so widely discussed this week.
Both of the online news articles were written on September 17, 2014, the day of the
update. The articles from the databases were written earlier this month, but included
fewer details about the update, and more about the release. In this case, this earlier
release of information was unfavorable because the information was the most current
and the most important on the day of the release. The authority of the writers was
equally balanced, as all writers were reputable media writers- with no evidence of
special sources within the company. Based on these aspects of the articles, the online
articles concerning the iOS8 update were better than the database journals.
