Lab Investigation: MYP year 5
You are provided with 4 metals
You are also provided with aqueous solutions of these four metals
Your Task: try to place the metals in a reactivity series Most Reactive ------------------------> Least Reactive Design a lab to do this. Your design must include the following: A guiding question(s). This should be the purpose of your experiment. What are you trying to figure out: a reactivity series for metals? Hypothesis A prediction for the outcome of your experiment. What do you think will happen and why do you think this will happen. Your reasoning should be based on scientific thinking Design an experiment by which you can collect data to prove or disprove your hypothesis. This design should include the equipment you need, a diagram of the apparatus and a step by step procedure. You should also state very clearly what variables you want to control and what variables you want to measure. Variables: Controlled variables: the ones you keep the same during the experiment Independent variables: the ones you change or manipulate during the experiment Dependent variables: the ones you observe or measure during the experiment During an experiment our aim is to investigate the effect of independent variables on the dependent variables. Collect data from you experiment. Present it neatly in a table or on a graph. In this lab we are doing strictly qualitative observations. Your table should be designed to write out qualitative observations. We are looking for colour change, temperature change and bubbles. Conclusion and Evaluation: In the conclusion and evaluation: List your reactivity series (from your lab results) Compare to known results. (Given in class) Evaluate your method. Is your data valid? Is your method reliable? Please suggest some improvements to your method. Task Duration: In class component One double period for Task explaining and initial design submitting. (P.S; you will be marked for design same day) One double period for lab investigation Out of class component One week for submitting lab report on turnit in.

Criterion B: Inquiring and designing Student is able to Achievement level Aim Hypothesis Variables Design 0 The student does not reach a standard identified by any of the descriptors below. 1-2 State a problem or question to be tested by a scientific investigation Outline a testable hypothesis Outline the variables Design a method, with limited success. 3-4 Outline a problem or question to be tested by a scientific investigation Formulate a testable hypothesis using scientific reasoning Outline how to manipulate the variables, and outline how relevant data will be collected Design a safe method in which he or she selects materials and equipment. 5-6 Describe a problem or question to be tested by a scientific investigation Formulate and explain a testable hypothesis using scientific reasoning Describe how to manipulate the variables, and describe how sufficient, relevant data will be collected Design a complete and safe method in which he or she selects appropriate materials and equipment. 7-8 Explain a problem or question to be tested by a scientific investigation Formulate and explain a testable hypothesis using correct scientific reasoning Explain how to manipulate the variables, and explain how sufficient, relevant data will be collected Design a logical, complete and safe method in which he or she Selects appropriate materials and equipment.
