Perimeter

Aim: Students distinguish the attribute of area and use informal and metric
units for measurement
Outcomes:
MS2.1 Estimates, measures, compares and records lengths, distances and
perimeters in metres, centimetres and millimetres

Indicators
Uses the term perimeter to describe the total distance around a shape
Estimates and measures the perimeter of two-dimensional shapes
Reads and interprets calibrations on measuring devices eg ruler,
measuring tape. (trundle wheel)
Resources:
Notebook (smartboard) activity (revision of perimeter)
Measuring equipment (trundle wheel, rulers)
Assessment Strategies:
Student participation
Observations during activity
Evidence of student discussion and reflection
Ability to solve problems with various solutions
Collection and marking of completed worksheet

Teaching and Learning Activities:
Introduction: (20 minutes)
Discuss with the class
expected behaviour/
consequences.
Complete smart board task as
a class with discussion of
concepts-, perimeter,
Teaching Notes:

Body: 30 mins
In pairs, students estimate the
perimeter various objects in
the room.
Students check their answers
with a ruler.
Students are paired and given
instruction how to use a trundle
wheel.
Students are given worksheet
to and asked to measure
various perimeters in the
Guide students with activity,
what do you think the
perimeter of your desk is?.
How accurate was your
estimate?

CARES values).

Conclusion 10 mins
Discuss findings as a class
asking students to justify their
responses.
Did everyone get the same
results?
Why?
If not what do they think went
wrong?
What applications would
perimeter be used for?
Place all results on whiteboard
for comparison.

Evaluation:
What worked?

What didnt work?
Did the lesson go as planned?
Was there sufficient time?
Did all students reach desired
outcomes and indicators? Why/ Why
not?

Were my instructions clear and
explicit?

What do I need to change/ include?
Did the lesson cater to the needs and
learning styles of all my learners?

If not what do I need to do to ensure
this happens in the future?
