CSIT 154 - 4 Credits - Database Concepts provides in-depth coverage of the content of database management systems (DBMS) and their capabilities and limitations, and it covers both physical and logical data structures with an emphasis on meaningful data relationships, the role of the database administrator, and the data dictionary.

II. Course Goals Overall A. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: Objective Module 1. Identify the major components of a database; 1 2. Identify the major components of a Database Management System (DBMS); 1 3. Distinguish between the primary database models: hierarchical, network, relational, and object-oriented; 13 4. Design a database; 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 5. Normalize a database; 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 6. Create a multi-table relational database; 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 7. Create Keys; 5, 6 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 8. Create Indexes; 5, 6 9. Implement Integrity Constraints; 5 10. Code simple queries using Structured Query Language (SQL); 3, 4, 5, 6 11. Describe the role of a Database Administrator (DBA) in a business organization; 1, 12. Create a database application for a business; 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 13. Distinguish between database management approaches: client/server, web applications, windows applications, and data warehouses; 13, 14 14. Utilize CASE (Computer-Aided Systems Engineering) software to design Entity Relationship (E-R) models for the logical design of a database; 10, 11 15. Interpret E-R models to do database queries and to build the physical database; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,12 16. Implement security measures; 5, 13 17. Differentiate between the various methods of handling concurrent updates; and 13 18. Explain the various data recovery processes. 13
B. Course Rationale: This course will challenge you to use critical thinking, analysis and CASE (Data Modeling) techniques to build effective databases. Well design databases facilitate data analysis for decision making. Information Technology professionals will benefit from learning how to effectively design and administer a DBMS system. C. Evaluation A. Requirements: You are expected to successfully complete the following graded assessments: Case Projects(3), Final Project, Midterm Exam and Final Exam
B. Grading Policy: The maximum grade on Graded Projects (Midterm Project and Final Project) turned in LATE will be 60% and corrections will NOT be allowed. Exams taken LATE will be penalized a minimum of 10 points. The one exception to these rules is for excused* absences, in which case you will receive a one day grace period. An exam may be taken ahead of schedule if a personal scheduling conflict occurs. The Final Exam must be taken at a CCBC Testing Center An appointment is REQUIRED!!! You are expected to do your own work. Cheating will be considered grounds for immediate dismissal from the course. You may be asked to explain the processes used to complete a project. Your Final Course Grade is a based on a Weighted Average which means that Graded Assessments that have a higher percentage weight will count more towards your Grade. All Assessments need to be successfully completed to insure successful completion of this course

Missed Midterm and Final Examinations may be made up if I am contacted within 24 hours and a valid verified excuse* is given. It is an expectation that you will log into Blackboard at least once a week (daily for the summer/winter semesters) to complete Learning Modules, Concept Reviews, find solutions to Learning Assignments, and interact with Communications Tools like E-mail, Discussion Board, Wikis, Blogs and Announcements . A. Special Procedures:
Learning Labs and Practice Assignments are designed to give you hands-on experience. They are considered practice and are not graded. You are not required to turn them in. However if you want me to review them for accuracy they must be turned in by the due date.
This is a blended course, which means that most of your work will be done online. Attendance is required 5 times during the semester at the Catonsville campus See the Course Schedule for the exact dates and room location
Graded work will be indicated as Graded Project An Open Lab (Catonsville HTEC 108 or Essex HTEC315) is available if needed to complete Coursework. If you experience difficulty completing course work at home, you should use the Open Lab or Virtual Desktop. The Final Exam must be taken at a CCBC Testing Center An appointment is REQUIRED!!! Blackboard is our means of communication and project submittal. Do NOT send email or projects elsewhere.
