Millennium Goals

By: Taylor Memmott

(I tried contacting my partner and he said that he has been sick and out
of commission so I just did it by myself)
What are they?
The 8 Millennium Goals are a project that the United Nations took on to
improve eight aspects of their people lives. The goal was that by 2015
poverty would be cut in half along with areas to reach by the other goals.
These developmental goals are:
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop and Global partnership for development.

My Country
My adopted country is El Salvador, officially the Republic of El Salvador,
is the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central
America. It is also one of the177 countries devoted to meeting the
eight goals of millennial development.
Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
Target A: Half the proportion of people whose income is less than $1.25 a day
Target B: Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all,
including women and young people
Target C: Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer
from hunger
Luckily the goal of portion of people
making less than $1.25 a day has been
met, and was met 5 years earlier than
originally planned. About 173 million
people no longer suffer from long-lasting
hunger.

El Salvador: Poverty and Hunger
Goal: Reduce Poverty by half
El Salvador today is at the Moderate Poverty line, their percentage
change has been 48% less poverty in their country. This leads me to
believe that yes, they can meet the goal of 50% less poverty in the
next year.
Goal: Reduce Hunger by half
El Salvador had an average of 22% change in their quest to end
hunger. While poverty must first be on the rise before hunger, I do not
believe they will make the mark by 2015, however, I believe soon
after they will.
Universal Primary Education
Target A: Children of either gender will complete all years of primary
school.
While at the start of the century, in 1999 kids in primary schools was up
by 82%, near the end it has
relaxed. In 2011 near 57 million
children of primary school
age are not in school.

El Salvador: Universal Primary Education
Goal: Have equal opportunity for boys and girls to go to school and
have all children receive primary education.
El Salvador today has a high enrollment rate, their percentage change
to date has been 27%. Having 95.8 children out of 100 attending
primary school.
They have already met and exceeded
expectations set for them by the
millennial goals.
Promote Gender Equality and Empower
women
Target: Dispense gender inequality in both primary and secondary schools
by 2005 and in every level by 2015.
Thankfully in most countries equality in primary school has been reached.
In spite of this
there is still gender inequality
inside of the work
fields and upper education.
El Salvador: Gender Equality
The goal to have gender equality in schools has risen by 4%, this is not
much but El Salvador is labeled as close to parity meaning close to
equality.
Womens share of paid employment in 1990 was as little as 30%,
today it has risen by 9% being qualified and medium share.
El Salvador is on its way to becoming a country of equal rights, by
educating their young girls they are already on their way. While they
are in the middle for equal pay they more the girls are educated the
more they will fight for equal rights.
Reduce Child Mortality
Target: Reduce infant mortality rate by 2/3
The infant mortality rate has gone down, at the start of the millennial
goals 12.7 million children died in 1990 down to 6.3 in 2013. While overall
the mortality rate has gone
down the rate of the children that die
after one month is increasing.
El Salvador Child Mortality
Goal: Reduce Child Mortality by 2/3
In 1990 there were 59.1 deaths per 1,000 children born now there is
15.9 deaths per 1,000. That is a 73% drop in child mortality.
This is 6% more than the goal required, this is a low mortality rate.
Improve Maternal Health
Target: Reduce maternal mortality ratio by 2/3
The maternal mortality ratio has dropped from 380 deaths per live birth
in 1990 to 210 in 2013. Also the deliveries made by health care
professionals rose by 12% between these two years.
El Salvador Maternal Mortality Rate
Goal: Reduce Maternal Mortality by
In 1990 out of every 100,000 births there were 150 deaths, as of 2010
there were 81 deaths per 100,000. That is a 46% drop in mortality
rate, this is also considered a low mortality rate.
Goal: Access to universal reproductive health
The average married (or in union) woman has access the reproductive
health in the past decade it has raised by 36% qualifying El Salvador
as high access to reproductive health.
While the percentages may not exactly meet with dropping by
inside their own country El Salvador is doing well and has a low
mortality rate in each.
Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other
diseases
Target A: Halt and reverse spread of HIV/AIDS
New HIV cases per 100 people ages 15-49 has declined by 44%. However, there are
still 2.3 million cases of infections and 1.6 million have died from Aids.
Target B: Universal access and treatment
for HIV/AIDS
Medicines to treat HIV were delivered to
9.5 million people.
Target C: Halt and reverse Malaria and
other diseases.
Interventions for Malaria has lead to the
decrease of mortality rates by 42%
From 2000 on 3.3 million deaths and 3
million lives of children were prevented

El Salvador: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria
and Other diseases
Goal: Halt and reverse spread of HIV/AIDS and TB
There was little to no information about the spread and preventing of
HIV/Aids.
In 1990 there were 63 new cases of Tuberculosis per 100,000 people
and 5.7 of people with TB per 100,000 of the diseased died. Now
there are only 27 new cases and only 1.1 die. This is a 57% change in
new cases and 81% in deaths.
El Salvador is doing very well in combating this disease and while have
not reversed it effects they have dropped its mortality rate
significantly.

Insure Environmental Sustainability
Target A: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies
Forests continue to disappear, and emission of cardon dioxide have increased by
more 50% since the start of the millennium.
Target B: Reduce biodiversity loss
Protected ecosystems cover 14% of land
Target C: Reduce by half the amount of people without access to drinking water
and basic sanitation
The goal to reduce by half has been met
and 2.3 billion people have gained access to
clean water
Target D: Improvement in the lives of 100
million slum dwellers
200 million people gained access water
sources, sanitation facilities, and better housing.
El Salvador Insure Environmental
Sustainability
Goal: Reverse loss of forests
1990 18.2% of land was covered in forests, 2010 13.9% of land has forests this
is medium forest cover
Goal: Halve the number of people without improved dirking water
1990 74.2% had adequate water sources, 2011 89.7% have improved sources
of water this is moderate coverage.
Goal: Halve proportion without sanitation
Between 1990 and 2011 there has been a 41% increase in improved
sanitation but this still leaves El Salvador in low coverage in sanitation.
El Salvador is in the medium range for environmental sustainability, while they
have made strides I do not believe it will be to par what they expect in 2015.
Global Partnership for Development
Target A: Open a more open and predictable trading system.
Development assistance hit a record high of $134.8 billion
Target B: Address needs of under developed countries
Aid to 34 of 48 least developed countries was lost about $28.9 billion
Target C: Address needs of landlocked and small island countries
Aid to landlocked countries fell but aid to
small islands increased.
Target D: Deal with debt problems in
developing countries
Debt still remains at 3% of export revenue
Target E: Provide affordable and essential
drugs
Global health funds increased despite
economic turn down
Target F: Make new technologies available
The number of internet users doubled between 2009 and 2014
El Salvador: Global Partnership for
Development
Goal: Improve technology
In 1990 there were 0 recorded internet users per 100 inhabitants, not
there are 25.5 people per 100 inhabitants.
This is a high usage area, and is continuing
to grow, they have met the standards of
improving internet use for 2015
