2.4 Refraction Lab: Follow that Refracted Ray Time: Minutes 42
General Learning Outcomes:
1. Investigate the transmission of light, and describe its behaviour using a geometric ray model
-
Specific Learning Outcomes:
Students Will.
1. investigate, measure and describe the refraction of light through different material
Learning Objectives:
Students Will
1. Understand what refraction is.

Body:
1. Lab Introduction
-Hand out labs and diagram pages
-Explain all the directions first
-Groups of 3-4 Everyone must be included.

2. Refraction Demo to refresh memory:
(only if needed)
- Have the students gather around the fish tank and shut the lights off.
-Point the laser from the surface of the water down at about 45 degrees. Ask the students if they
notice anything about the angle of the laser beam before the water and in the water.
- Then show internal reflection by pointing the laser up from the bottom to the water surface and
explain that it is reflecting off the surface of the water.
- Do a few more movements and angles to show how refraction moves.

3. Refraction Lab:
-Students will work in groups of 3-4
-Choose one member of your group to get the medium and one member of your group to get
protractors and lasers
- Work through the procedure for both mediums first then go back and
measure the angle and edit and refine your diagrams
-you may use text books and other resources for the questions and conclusion.
