5.2. READING
Dear sir,
Aiming at the project completion date of June 20,2005, we are proseeding now to steps tiling for
the main staircase and adjustment touch-up of emulsion paint at this area. Therefore, we work like
to recommend people of AA, AB, Rosaco, and TK to not circulate and move materials through
this area and use instead the escape staircase (close to the swimming pool). As a mater of fact we
have completed all wall emulsion paint at the staircase area and have made tough-up painting
work many due to various impacts on walls by other contractors people while they were moving
equipment and materials though these areas.
So please have actions with other contractors to allow us to not be disturbed anymore by other
people to achieve our works.
Many thanks, and Best regards

To : CPJ Design Consulting Co.
We would like to express our many thanks for the preliminary design by your company for our
ancestors worship-building-complex in Tien Giang province. After study internal discussion,we
have the following recommdations.
- We will rather have a water-body in front f the ancestors worship building.
- The need of a bridge or large culvert for access to the worksite.
- The worship building-complex should be located on high-level ground to creat imposing
expression.
- The dining and service areas should be located behind the main worship-build not on a
horizontal line with it.
- Reduce the water-body area.
Best regards,

SETTING OUT
Student : What is the use of batter boards?
Teacher : Batter boards are used to record on site the location information of the setting out before
excavation.
Student : What are the successive steps of a setting-out ?
Teacher : Hereafter are the successive steps of a setting-out:
- Survey stakes are driven to determine gird lines. A nail on the top of the stakes indicates
the extract position.
- Batter boards are erected on the outside of the stakes, beyond the perimeter grid lines to
allow excavation. Strings are streched between the boards to show grid lines. Saw kerfs
are made in the boards, or lining nails are driven instead of saw kerfs, so that strings can
be replaced after excavation.
- Check of the layout.
- Removal of strings and survey stakes.
After these steps of the setting out, excavation can be done.

READY-MIXED CONCRETE PLACING
We will place ready-mixed concrete continuously for the whole area limited by the construction
joint, including foundation beams and slabs and retaining wall of height h 0.15 at construction
joint with plastic water-stop for waterproofing treatment. We will use 2 ready-mixed concrete
trucks with pumping-pipe jib and 30 ready-mixed concrete supply trucks to continuously provide
concrete to the pumping trucks. Initially, we will use the 2 pumping trucks to pour concrete from
2 directions, from gridline axis 1 and axis F to the center of the area (Please see attached drawing
to the layout plan of pumping trucks). On examination of drawings, the area inside the grid A-B &
9-10 cant be reached to by the pumping truck jib. For this specific area, we will use a trough to
convey concrete from the end of piping jib to the area of concrete pouring. The 2 pumping trucks
will be definitely located to not undergo any move to other places. Pumping truck 1 will be on
axis E outside the ramp, pumping truck 2 will be on axis 3 outside axis D. For test sampling, on
arrival of ready-mixed concrete trucks, IDT supervisors will designate at random any truck to take
samples.

He asked me to sort ot out with you.
Mr.Tan (Party As supervisor) : Yes, thats right, and the first thing I tell you this morning is you
got a good point by immediately stopping the work yesterday. This external wall is a 200mm
thick wall, hollow-brick stretcher, solid-brick header, right?
Mr.Ba : Right! Oh, I see the failure now. The masons used semi-solid bricks with two-hole
perforating instead of plain solid bricks as headers.
Mr.Tan : OK, such headers sllow lateral infiltration of moisture from outside. You are happy that
the wall is only 3 m long and 600mm high.
Mr.Ba : OK, Im going to give the oder to demolish it right now and build it again the right way.
Mr.Tan : OK, youre welcomed!

TRUSSES AND TRUSS-BEAMS
Teacher : A truss is a structure composed of a combination of members such as chords, posts,
struts and gussets.
Student : So what is a truss-beam?
Teacher : A truss-beam or trussed beam is a beam in the form of a truss. It has a web appearance
and is braced by one or more vertical posts supported by inclined rods called strusts.
Student : What is a bar joist?
Teacher : First of all, you have to distinguish a joist from a beam. A joist is a small beam used to

12.2. READING
VENEERS
Veneers are very thin sheats or leaves of wood which are cut from a log for constructiona; or
decorative purposes.
It is ironic that even though veneers of the rarest woods have been used in making some of the
finest furniture ever produced, some people still regard veneering as inferior to soil wood.
However, few would disregard that veneer, whether selected for its natural color and figure or
worked into floral or formal patterns, brings a unique quality to furniture and woodware.
Today, with the widespread use of modern adhesives and stable man-made backing boards,
veneered products are superior to solid wood in certain applications. With our natural resources of
fine woods gradually disappearing, veneer enables us to use wood economically so e can continue
to enjoy it.

HAND TOOLS
At a time when more and more wood workers are turning to machine tools for convenience or
greater accuracy, someone coming fresh to woodwork might assume hand were merely relies left
over from the leisurely days when craftsmen were paid for the quanlity of their products rather
than for their labour.
However, that simply isnt true. A competent woodworker can often finish a job by hand in the
time it takes to set up a machine for the same purpose. Working by hand also gives a feel for
materials that cant be dereved from operating a machine the blade, for example, and how some
woods are more forgiving while others show up the slightest error on the part of the woodworker.

Site Manager : Well, now, my last point is about the falls youve indicated on the flat roof of the

Architect : Oh yes, lets see. Its drawing number L (27) 5
Site Manager : I would like to dee greater falls on here. Er I hope you don't mind my mentioning
it.
Architect : No, not at all. But, actually, Im not sure what the problem is. Take this one here is
falls about 125mm in 10.12m. And that one that falls about 75mm in 6.76m.
Site Manager : Yes, well, in fact thats only about 1 in 90 in each case, you see. Ive falls that
asphalt laid at that fall can result in ponding.
Architect : Can it? Hmm.Yes, you can be right here.
Site Manager : Of course, Im not saying it will cause a leak, but I do like to see a flat roof that
drains off properly.
Architect : Well, Im very glad you brought up the point. Ill increase the falls to about 1 in 75,
then.

WOOD
The appearance of wood the grain pattern, colour and texture is the prime consideration when
choosing wood for a project.
Its working or strength characteristics are usually a second consideration, but they are no less
important and the wood must also be selected for fitness of purpose. If you are not familiar with a
particular wood which appeals to you, discuss its properties with your supplier to make sure it will
suit your requirements.
Selecting wood is a process of balancing appearance with strenth, workability, pliability, weight,
cost and availability. The appearance and characteristics of wood are determined by the nature of
its cell structure. Plywood is a laminated material made from thin sheets of wood bonded in layers
to form a strong stable board.
Laminating wood was a technique known to craftsmen in accient times, but plywood is a
relatively modern material first produced commercially around the mid-nineteenth century. Its
panel size, stability and ease of working made it a useful material for interior joinery and carass
construction, but it was not until the development of waterproof adhesives in the 1930s that it
found a palace in the construction industry.

TIME IS MONEY
During the erection of a building, many arguments take place over money. The contractor wishes
to receive enough to ensure him a profit, and the client wishes to spend no more than his budget
sum. The following conversation is between :
Jeff Site surveyor
Martin Consulting Quantity Surveyor
Jeff : You know, we shall need to do a lot of extra work on that profiled steel roofing to the
factory. The bill of quantities clearly says that no cutting of the sheets is required, doesnt it ?
Martin : Yes, thats right. Actually, Im pretty sure the architect designed the portal frame to fit
exactly three of those sheets.
Jeff : Well, Im afraid he got it wrong. Two sheets are not far off the right size. And well have to
cut just under half a sheet length to make up the difference.
Martin : Oh? Well, thats funny. Youre sure you bought the right produce?
Jeff : Absolutely possitive. Only Ive just found out that the manufacturer changes his sheet sizes
last year, so now they come a bit longer, you see.
Martin : Oh, no!

Jeff : Yes, Im afraid so. Its going to mean a lot of extra work, you know. We shall want paying
for all this cutting.
Martin : Well, Im not at all sure youll have to do any. After all, you could probably get sheets the
right size from another company, couldnt you ?
Jeff : Well, I don't know about that. I think its a bit late now. We ordered the ones in the bill, and
they were delived yesterday, you see.
Martin : Well, the drawing does specify the actual size of sheet, so that means youve either
bought the wrong product or else theyve sent you the wrong one.
Jeff : But you specify a product which isnt made any more!
Martin : Hmm- I suppose youre right. But actually, Im sure the architect will want them

19.2. READING :
SEWAGE TREATMENT
The basic principles in sewage treatment rest on a foundation in physics, chemistry, bacteriology,
and biochemstry. From the time excreta leaves the human body, organism are at work breaking
down organic matter and transforming its constituents. When the sewage reaches the treatment
work, the principlesof physics are applied in the apparatus, and the aid of bacteria may also be
sought, as well as of chemicals.
SLUDGE
The great majority of solid pollutants, and the converted substances tey produce, removed during
the liquid phase of all types of water treatment, finally collect as suspensions which can vary in
concentration and are known as sludge.
Municipal wastewater sludge :
ENGLISH FOR CONSTRUCTION

- Main characteristic : Hydrophilic organic
- Treatment : All biological
ACTIVATED SLUDGE :
The sludge suspension in the aeration tank containing the purifying bacteris (flora is called
activated sludge (AS). Activated sludge processes essentially involve a phase in which the water
to be purified is bought into contact with a bacterial floc in the presence of oxygen (AERATION),
followed by a phase of separation from this floc (CLARIFICATION). In fact, these processes
amount to an intensification of the phenomena that occur in the natural environment. The different
lies in the greater concentration of microorganisms which results in a greater OXYGEN
VOLUME DEMAND. Moreover, in order to maintain the bacterial mass in suspension, it must be
artificially mixed.

project finished on time.
Mr.Nam : Yes, but a week early to please the Owner? Its too much to ask.

Young Long : Oh.
Mr.Son : Ill just explain what all these are, shall I ? then Id like you to go and fetch them. Okay?
Long : Oh, right.
Mr.Son : Now, look at that symbol there - thats a duct-mounted silencer. Do you know what it

Long : Hmm.
Mr. Son : This one here this is a fire damper made form intumescent material. Its flat and
round. Have you ever seen one? It look a bit honeycomb.
Long : Oh yes.
Mr.Son : And that one is a length of flexible ducting, and theres constant flow rate controller
valve.
Long : Hmm. Right.
Mr.Son : Lets see, now. You go through the drawing and make yourself a list of all these parts
we need. And if theres anything you don't understand, just let me know.

LANDSCAPING

Peter : Oh, not as well as Id hoped. Im afraid. You know the grass sowing was programmed for
the end of the sowing season? Well, theres just no way well be ready by then.
Sylvia : Yes, its been such awful weather, hasnt it? What we could do with now is a good dry
spell, or the gound will be too wet even to prepare for any sowing.
Peter : It really has been wet this autumn. And do you know, since last winter weve lost about six
weekss working time through inclement weather. And this is supposed to be the better part of the
year! Its really put us back.
Sylvia : Im sure it has. And of course we could be into the cold weather again before we know it.
Goodness knows how many weekss work will be lost once winter really sets in.
Peter : Hmm. Thats just what worries me. But anyway,we do expect to finish the external works
by Chirstmas, and then the landscape contractor will be able to make a start, all being well.
Sylvia : Well, we could be lucky, I suppose. If theres no freezing we might be able to plant trees.
But the rest of the plant material well, well just have to hope for more favourable conditions in
the spring.
