USGBC Credit/1 HSW

This USG program examines the Health Care Environment by studying the Guidelines for Design and Con-
struction of Health Care Facilities, Facilities Guidelines Institute, 2010 Edition. Section 2.1-7.2.3.4 Ceilings
of the Guidelines describes the attributes of ceilings required for patient, semi-restricted, restricted, and die-
tary and laundry areas. It details the criteria to provide ceilings that prevent the habitation and spread of virus-
es and bacteria.

Kevin Carr, AIA, IIDA, LEED AP ID+C is the USG Architectural Services Representative for the Kansas, Ne-
braska, Iowa and Kansas City markets. With over 20 years as an Architect in the Kansas City area, Kevin is
both a licensed Architect and licensed Interior Designer. He is a graduate of Kansas State University with a
Bachelor of Interior Architecture and is a past president of the IIDA Mid-America chapter.

During his career, Kevin has had the opportunity to work on several different project types including com-
mercial, retail and corporate interiors. Kevin regularly made presentations to municipalities and business lead-
ers to get projects approved through the public process. He has been involved in business develop-
ment and marketing of design services to new clients as well. His diverse background of architec-
ture/interior design, public speaking, managing multiple projects and deadlines has helped pave the
way for success with his current responsibilities.

ROI Return on Investment by Matthew Walsh, CDT

We had a few topics come up at our last board meeting that got
me thinking about the value of being a CSI member, and I would
like to share them with you all:

Cost: Our dues are far less expensive than other organizations,
especially when you consider what you get per dollar spent. Our
product show gains more and more momentum every year, yet
the price to participate does not reflect as such. Yes, we have
minor increases here and there, but thats passed directly
through from the venue. We dont get greedy on that. If you are
a guest, the one who invited you picks up the bill for your dinner
and education. Its a pretty good deal.

Diversity: How do we know that we are competitive? Our chap-
ter membership is an amazing split between Architects, Engi-
neers, Contractors, Consultants, and Product Reps. We all talk,
and are members of other organizations, and can safely say we
offer more bang for the buck.

Networking: This one seems obvious, but lets drill down a little deeper. How many of you have
been involved in a project, and hit a wall in some capacity, and needed additional resources? The
membership is a great place to look for additional help. With our diversity, if you were to call on
one person and they couldnt help, you know you can at least get pointed in the right direction.

There are more things I could add, but you all get the point. You all paid your membership dues, so
make sure you get the most out of it. See a stranger at a meeting? Go say hi. New to the chapter?
Find me and I will get you with the Membership Chair to make sure you are taking full advantage.

Regards,
Matthew M Walsh, CDT
