Solar Paneling:
Average savings per year in Texas: $1,048
Tax benefits
Radiant Barriers:
Installed in attic to reduce summer heat gain.
Reduces cooling costs
Cellulose Insulation:
Low-cost, high-performing insulation
Composed of at least 75% recycled paper fiber
Bamboo Flooring:
Looks like traditional wood flooring
Higher hardness rating than hard wood
Bamboo grows much faster than hard wood

8
LED Lighting:
Longer life than incandescent bulbs
Do not give off heat. Incandescent bulbs release 90% of their
energy as heat.
Native Plant Landscaping:
Prevents introduction of invasive plant species
Require less maintenance than non-native species
Reduces watering costs
Better for reducing erosion
Energy Star Appliances:
Reduces energy use
Save on electricity and water costs
Double-paned Windows:
Can reduce energy usage
Up to 24% in winter and 18% in summer
Reduce noise pollution by at least 20%

- Solar paneling on roof
- Native grasses and other plants
- Double-paned windows
- Single story to reduce heating
costs
- Bamboo flooring
- LED lighting
- Glass countertops
- Energy Star appliances
Environmentally-conscious consumers:
Tend to be married with children
High education level
High income level
Cost-conscious consumers:
Older
Want energy efficiency because of cost savings
rather than the environment effects
Take advantage of the tax credits available for green
construction features.
11
Cities where new environmental regulations
are in place:
Dallas has implemented regulations for new
residential construction that focus on water
preservation and high-efficiency fixtures
San Francisco has implemented a checklist/point-
system basis for green requirements of single-family
new construction. These are among the strictest in
the nation.

12
Time Frame:
The average time to complete a new house construction project is 8
to 9 months.
Our project took 90 days about a third of the time.
Budget:
The average budget for a four-bedroom home in the Dallas area is
$433,500
Our original budget was $300,000 and we managed to complete
the project just under our goal.
Due to green construction materials
Bamboo flooring, fiber cement siding, and cellulose insulation.
Native landscaping is another green, cost-effective measure
Design:
As seen on Slide 10, our designs utilize a clean modern take that
has become increasingly popular, especially in urban areas.
Focus on both green features and energy efficiency set us apart
from other companies who focus on just one of those elements.
13
Schedule:
Problem: April, May and June have the highest average rainfall than any
other quarter of the year. Delays due to rain and contractor no-shows were
frequent.
Solution: Moving resources from delayed portions tasks that could be done
despite the weather
Ex: If exterior painting was scheduled, work on interior tasks instead.
Budget:
Problem: Installation cost to install solar paneling was underestimated.
Solution: Cutting options out of original budget
Ex: Original budget included a pervious pavement driveway that would help
reduce water run-off. A traditional driveway was used for a third of the cost of
pervious materials.
Design/Location:
Problem: To get the most benefit, solar panels have to be placed where
they will get the most sun during the day.
Solution: Roof had to be redesigned so that the panels would receive more
sun.
To offset the cost of design change, we decided to put carpet in the bedrooms
instead of the more costly bamboo

14
Solar paneling
These were more expensive to install than planned
for. Future budgets will be adjusted to account for
the installation costs.
The benefits may not be worth the cost in locations
where there is little sun or an abundance of trees.
Can effect the roofing design
Contractor
Weather
Be sure to have an alternative schedule to account
for the rainy seasons, extreme weather
