1.1 Integration of Learning Outcomes/Objectives
Students will be able to explore the internet using one particular website to identify
entertaining exhibits from Disney Worlds EPCOT Center that relate to Science,
Technology, and Society.
Students will be able to make Global Connections from Disney World to the outside
world with the innovative attractions presented within Disneys EPCOT Center with the
use of technology and the internet.
1.2 Standards
NCSS.1.9.a enable learners to explain how language, art, music, belief systems, and other
cultural elements can facilitate global understanding or cause misunderstanding
NCSS.1.8.b provide opportunities for learners to make judgments about how science and
technology have transformed the physical world and human society and our
understanding of time, space, place, and human-environment interactions
S4.A.1.1.2: Identify and describe examples of common technological changes past to
present in the community (e.g., energy production, transportation, communications,
agriculture, and packaging materials) that have either positive or negative impacts on
society or the environment.
1.3 Anticipatory Set
The lesson will begin with a brief explanation of how the students will be discovering the
amusement park in the heart of Florida: Walt Disney World! The introduction will begin
with a short discussion on relating experiences to Disney World through a class
discussion.
The teacher will ask the students to relate to previous experience: "Has anyone ever had
the opportunity to visit Walt Disney World in Florida?"
o "What was your favorite theme park in Disney World?"
o "Did any of you realize that everything that you experienced at Disney World was
some form of science or technology that has been a large contributor to our
modern day technology?"
EPCOT offers exciting entertainment and attractions that relate to our
lessons. Global Connections that could be found at EPCOT Center could
be the many different forms of technology that are used to show the World
Showcase, as we explore the many different countries and cultures from
around the globe. EPCOT also shows Global Connections through
showing us through a timeline the many ways that science and technology
has grown in our society and our world at Spaceship Earth (the big golf
ball). Our lesson today will be about being able to explore and
demonstrate at least one of the attractions that has contributed to what we
are talking about today: Science, Technology, and Society as well as
Global Connections. EPCOT Center is a great innovative theme park that
can clearly show us both of these themes.
"Today we will explore the innovations, or new methods or ideas that are located within
Disney World.
The teacher will then show a short 4 minute video from travelchannel.com that tours
EPCOT Center. (http://www.travelchannel.com/video/epcot-center-11377). This video
shows a brief tour of the science and technology and global connections that are found
within the theme park.
1.4 Procedures
1. The lesson continues once the tour of EPCOT Center from Travel Channel has been
completed. Students will be asked to briefly call out something that popped out to them
that had to do with science, technology, or global connections.
2. The students will now be placed in to small groups of 4-5 and will be given an iPad or
Tablet (or share a computer), and will be asked to open up the browsers from the desktop
as we begin our activity. Once the browsers are open, the teacher will ask the students to
open the Bookmarks drop-down menu, and search for EPCOT Center Attractions.
This will direct students to https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/destinations/epcot/ where
we will explore attractions at Disneys EPCOT Center that relate to the two themes for
the lesson.
3. Once students have opened the website, an explanation of the assignment will occur:
Using this website, we will explore the many attractions that can be found at Disneys
EPCOT Center. EPCOT is made up of two separate sections that make up one park:
Future World and the World Showcase. Future World is made up of new and innovative
technology and science attractions. The World Showcase is made up of 11 country
attractions. I know each of us will want to look at each and every attraction, but we will
limit ourselves to only two to five attractions to write about. As I hand out these
worksheets, please note that there is a list of attractions that we can research. Since there
are so many attractions, I want us to focus on the ones that are most relevant to our two
themes today. Along with the worksheets, I will hand out an 8.5x11 piece of white
construction paper that we will use to create a drawing or a written and decorated title or
list of the things we write about on our worksheets. The pictures can be anything that you
would like them to be that directly relate to the attractions you explore. Please keep in
mind that time will be limited and should be focused more on the worksheets.
4. Focusing back on the website, we can now open up the link labeled Attractions
underneath the image of Spaceship Earth. Once we have clicked on that the attractions
are listed in alphabetical order. Remember to follow the list of places that are listed on
your worksheets. To open up an attraction click on the name of the attraction and it will
direct you to a new page that gives a description or history of what it is. Some
descriptions have a link that reads, Read More, so keep an eye out for that since it will
give more information about the attraction. Once you have finished researching one
attraction, clicking on the Back button once will take you to the previous page of the list
of all of the attractions. Work together to ask questions, help each other with navigating
through the website, and keep in mind that again time is limited. Choose attractions that
are new and fun to you! Please do not hesitate to raise hands if you have any questions or
concerns that need to be addressed. I will make my way to your group when I see that
hands are raised.
5. The students will now be able to begin their in-class assignment. The students are to
follow the list from the worksheet of places that are acceptable to view and study since
they directly relate to the two themes being studied in class. Next they will be asked to
use this time to read and study the information to the attractions, and they will be asked to
discuss important facts that relate to science, technology, society, as well as global
connections with their group. One group member will be completing the worksheet as
other students find information to record. Since information given on the website is
limited, it will give students the ability to already have the information summarized on
how it relates to these two themes. With Guided Practice students will be observed by the
teacher and the teacher will be accessible to students for questions or concerns related to
the material.
6. Once students have finished studying and discussing anywhere from two to five
attractions, they can begin drawing a picture on the white construction paper. Students
also have the option of writing a decorative label of the attractions they studied and
explored from the website.
7. The students will then take their drawings and the one worksheet per group and hand it in
to the teacher for assessment. If time permits, students may share one or two of the
attractions studied with the rest of the class.
1.5 Differentiation
ELL students within the classroom will be paired with a buddy to assist in understanding
the content. Their buddy will be with them before, during, and after instruction of the
activity, and will also be in the same group as they complete their assignments. They will
also be asked to sit together closer to the screen where the teacher will show the Travel
Channel video clip; doing this will help with hearing the video since the narrator is off-
screen most of the time throughout the video.
Any students with hearing loss/disabilities will be within view, at all times, of lip
movement of the teacher, and within close range for a better chance of hearing the
content. They will also be paired with a buddy that they will be seated with before,
during, and after the instruction, and will be in the same activity group.
1.6 Closure
Today we have focused on the many different and fun attractions at Walt Disney Worlds
EPCOT Center. We found ways that two different themes related to one central theme park in
the heart of Florida. In the heart of Florida is Orlando, and not far from Orlando is Disney
World! Amazingly we were able to focus on one great theme park in Disney World that had both
the Global Connections and Science, Technology, and Society themes. Some Global
Connections that were obvious from EPCOT were from the World Showcase section of EPCOT
Center. The World Showcase is a realistic theme park that explores different cultures, celebrates
diversity, and celebrates sharing knowledge and educating others of the different countries that
are around our own world. Yesterdays lesson on Louisiana and Culture was a great way to open
up this lesson of Global Connections within Disney Worlds very cultural theme park.
We also talked about all of the amazing modern technology and science that has helped
shape our own societies that are shown right there in Disney Worlds EPCOT Center. From
Spaceship Earth to Innovations, EPCOT has a lot to offer to this theme we explored more of
today. I hope that we all had fun in class today and everyone enjoyed all of the states we learned
about in the Southeastern United States Unit!
1.7 Formative/Summative Assessment
1. Formative Assessment will take place before, during, and after instruction. As the class
begins, students will be asked to identify the different types of technology that were
obvious from the Travel Channel video tour of EPCOT. Formative Assessment also takes
place as the teacher walks around and observes how students are working together to
research the attractions found at EPCOT, and how well they work together and writing
information down and their time management. Observation of the students is a big key to
this lessons Formative Assessment.
2. Summative Assessment will be the project that the groups will complete during the
lesson. Each project will be handed in at the end of class. Students will be graded using a
rubric. The rubric is attached to this lesson plan.

1.9 Technology
Technology must be used to enhance the lesson with the use of laptops/computers, iPads, or
Tablets. The technology is necessary for the lesson as it is used to research and study the
attractions at EPCOT. It is also used to show the classroom a brief tour of the attractions at
EPCOT.
2.1 Reflection on Planning
While writing this lesson plan it reminded me of all the fun times I had as a child
when I went to Disney World. It also reminded me how much Disney has to offer in the
world of science and technology. Epcot is a great way to show the diversity of cultures
and global connections as well. It has both the science and technology, as well as global
and cultural connections. I think that using Disney World to focus in on Florida is a great
way to relate to the students.
EPCOT is located in Florida and focusing on Disney World can help keep the
attention of the students as they finish up on their unit of Southeastern United States. I
think that I would have fun with my students in a classroom doing a lesson on Disney
World and all that it has contributed to the world of science and technology. It has also
helped provide young children with the knowledge of different cultures around the world
and the celebration of people throughout the world. I think this lesson is a great way to
introduce the many different things that have come from just one place in Florida.
However, I think that this lesson would not be possible without the use of technology,
and a possible substitution would need to be made if technology was not able to be used.
