FOCUS AREA, (with

descriptor)
Support student
participation
(Identify strategies to
support inclusive
student participation
and engagement in
classroom activities.)

ELABORATION

ICT Integration: I would consider Prezi and Podcasts to be

two highly interactive ICT tools which come to mind as
useful in encouraging student participation in the learning
process. They are both somewhat collaborative and allow
for students to interact with each other as well as the
subject matter.
A specific example of this would be asking for a podcast
from a small group of students on a particular historical
event. They could get together, organise and write what
they were going to say, produce and present it.

4.1

Pedagogical justification: the often physical and always

creative nature of such a task should hopefully assist in
more in-depth learning and a different perspective. I should
hopefully also encourage those students who are more
motivated by kinaesthetic learning and hands-on work, to
engage further with the source material. It is active
learning and that is always more admirable than passivity.

Manage classroom
activities
(Demonstrate the
capacity to organise
classroom activities
and provide clear
directions.)

ICT: I'd consider using Edmodo to connect with students

outside of the classroom. By providing clear timetables,
structures of the unit and lesson plans, and breakdowns of
assessment tasks, day to day activities and further
readings, students can get a much more holistic vision of
the course, which can often help them to then focus on the
specific details of the subject you are teaching.

Manage challenging
behaviour
(Demonstrate
knowledge of practical
approaches to
manage challenging
behaviour.)

ICT: I like the use of Edmodo whereby teachers can see all
interactions that go on between students on the board.
Very big brother, however given the tendency of students
to veer way off track and often venture into conversations
unsuitable for the classroom context, I can see how useful
it would be. It allows for interactive digital discussion
without the teacher needing to worry that things might be
going on beyond their supervision and control.

Maintain student
safety (Describe
strategies that
support students
well- being and safety
working within school
and/or system,
curriculum and
legislative
requirements)
4.4

Students who are just beginning to learn to

navigate their way through both the physical and
digital worlds should be given all the help that they
can. This is why I like the feature on Edmodo which
allows the teacher to monitor all conversation that
occurs. It is structured and does not provide
avenues for cyber stalking, online bullying,
meaningless off-topic chat and all the other
paraphernalia that comes with online interaction.
Students should also be being constantly educated
about the risks online. Education is really the best
tool here, and I would encourage classes and short
programs run on chat rooms, internet forums and
'stranger danger' on the net. A bit like sex ed, but
with computers instead.

Use ICT safely,

responsibly and
ethically
(Demonstrate an
understanding of the
relevant issues and
the strategies
available to support
the safe, responsible
and ethical use of ICT
in learning and
teaching.)
4.5

One should always use ICT safely, responsibly, and

ethically. One should teach young people to also do
this. It is good.
Example: all students should get lessons on how to
research online. A tool such as Turnitin and the way
it works should be demonstrated and explained, so
that students understand that the nature of
intellectual property carries itself online, and that
plagiarism is plagiarism whether the words are
copied from a book or a webpage.
Another important use of the tech world is the
ability to research with discrimination. Wikipedia is
not a good reference tool beyond 9th grade. To
learn to recognise what is a reputable source, and
what is not, is a crucial skill that any student
entering higher education will need to learn. This is
an important thing to teach.
