ELED 3221 Summary & Reflection

Summary:
I started out the lesson by going over the definitions of the types of Heat Transfer
(conduction, convection, & radiation) which turned out to be a waste of time as I had to
continue the lesson the next day (the matching worksheet and the assessment). I then played the
rap song about the heat transfer and handed out the worksheets to the students and had them fill
the Labeling worksheet then I had the students cut and sort the pictures of the heat transfer
the students took excessively long time cutting (wont be making that mistake again).
Reflection:

What did the students find out in the experience? Were there any surprises?
The students werent surprised, I was. I was surprised at how long they werent taking to
cut the pieces of pictures when they didnt take that long at all the day before (they were
cutting labels the day before I taught the lesson).

How did the students in each group work together? Were there any problems?
There werent any problems in terms of the students working together.

How did the students connect this experience to their daily lives?
There were plenty of examples in the worksheets the students could relate to. Many of the
examples were everyday task the kids see happening.

How did I accommodate students with learning and physical differences?

The students were grouped based on their levels. The lower level students were sitting in
front of the class while the higher-level students (relatively speaking) were sitting
towards the other half of the room.

Did I use technology effectively?

I used the Smartboard to display a video (rap about the heat transfer). I would probably
use it again as a whiteboard to take notes during other lessons.

Overall, what do I think the students got out of the experience?

The students were able to comprehend the differences between Conduction, Convection,
and Radiation a little better.

What do I remember most about this science activity?

2 very important things I learned in this lesson were:
Stick to your lesson plan.
Give explicit instruction each and every single time.

Would I do it again? How would I plan differently the next time?

Overall, I would do the same thing if I was doing the lesson over other than making some
adjustments regarding instruction. The first day, my teacher thought I was yelling at the
students because I was speaking loudly and the second day when I talked closer to my
normal tone and then the teacher thought it was too low. I would train my students a
specific way (probably something like Maracas or something that would make some kind
of noise that would get the students attention).

What did you learn about yourself as a learner and as a teacher during this lesson?
I added going over the definitions of Conduction, Convection, Radiation, Conductor, and
Insulator this too about 10 mins which pretty much went to waste as the whole lesson
was supposed to be an hr. Another delay in the lesson was due to the students taking
longer than expected to cut the pictures out and arranging them in categories (conduction,
radiation, & convection). If the picture pieces would have been cut already then that part
of the lesson shouldve have taken that long. Also, I couldnve had the students get
started on the Matching Worksheet after they were done with the labeling one (that
wasted about 2-3 min). Another thing I couldve improved on was giving them explicit
direction each and every single time because some kids were confused because I didnt
repeat my instruction more than 2-3 times. Another thing that couldve made my lesson a
little better was talking about the video in Engage section and have them answer
questions from the video. Turns out I say you guys a lot...this needs to be controlled.
Ill probably stick with everyone or ladies and gents next time. My overall lesson
went other than the fact I had to continue with my lesson the next day.
