EEEB283 Electrical Machines and Drives Checklist for Chapter 7

Checklist for Chapter 7: Induction Motors

Must know how to calculate nsync, nslip, slip s, nm (if s and nsync is known),
rotor frequency fr, speed of stator field Bs and speed of rotor field
Br.
Must know why rotor speed can never exceed synchronous speed.
Must memorise the IM final equivalent circuit (R1, jX1, Rc, jXm, jX2,
R2/s) and know how to split R2/s to show two resistors responsible for
PRCL and Pconv.
Must remember the power flow diagram and how to calculate Pin, PSCL,
PAG, PRCL, Pconv, Pout, Pcore (if Rc given) and efficiency.
Must know how to use the Thevenin equivalent method (VTH, RTH and
XTH) to calculate Tind at a particular slip, Tmax and smax.
Must know the torque-speed curve of the IM looks like and how it
would vary if R2 is varied.
Must understand how Tmax, smax, rotor speed, Pout and efficiency would
vary if R2 is varied.
Must know how to conduct the DC test, No-load test and LockedRotor test:
o How to do them, i.e. methods?
o What are the conditions required (if any) when conducting the
tests?
o What are measured?
Must know how to obtain the equivalent circuit parameters from the
three tests:
o How to get R1 from DC test data?
o How to get Prot and (X1 + Xm) from No-load test data?
o How to get R2, X1 and X2 from locked-rotor test data?
