Big Ideas:
1. What were the biggest reasons why the US was able to gain a world level of power during the 20th Century?
2. How were the US's Actions during WWI and the foreign policies they enacted affect how the world viewed the US?
3. What were the social, economic and political ramifications of WWI?
Unit Goals and Objectives:
1. List the purpose and the effects of the Open Door policy.
2. Describe the Spanish-American War and U.S. expansion in the South Pacific.
3. Discuss Americas role in the Panama Revolution and the building of the Panama Canal.
4. Explain Theodore Roosevelts Big Stick diplomacy, William Tafts Dollar Diplomacy, and Woodrow Wilsons Moral Diplomacy, drawing on relevant speeches.
5. Analyze the political, economic, and social ramifications of World War I on the home front.
6. Trace the declining role of Great Britain and the expanding role of the United States in world affairs after World War II.
Unit Summary:
We will be using multiple learning strategies like analyzing primary sources, collaborating with peers from class, and presenting information that was
researched and understood as a group. Students will learn about several diplomatic ideologies, and policies that presidents enacted relating to other nations. By
the end of the unit students will also observe the impact of US involvement in the Panama Revolution, WWI on the home front, Spanish American war in the
Pacific. We will see how the US came to become a world power and how it has impacted us till this day. Beginning with the assessment to see what you guys
already know I can create a better lesson. There is a web exercise that will teach you about the different diplomatic policies of the presidents during the early
20th century. There is a guided lecture that you will be filling notes with as you follow the lecture notes. There is a assessment quiz and an overall unit exam as
well. This is a great unit to show you guys the rise of the US to a top world power.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Pre-test on material of unit. Will better show what
the students should focus on and what I should
emphasize.

Formative:
Graphic Organizer: Compare the three types
of diplomatic policies we learn about. (Dollar,
Big Stick, Moral)
Timeline: Organize the events that led to the
rise of the US to a world power.
Personal Response: Students respond to
what they would think or say during this time
in history.
Quiz: on the materials of the unit to see where
the students progress is.

Summative:
Exam- 25 multiple choice question, 5 True
and False, 2 Long answer questions all on the
unit materials.
Presentation- Students will choose one of the
diplomacy policies (either dollar, moral, big
stick, even open door) and present that policy
with examples of where it was used, what it
means, who created it, and what it says about
the US in their opinion.

Lesson Activities: Students will go through a guided assignment where they


will read documents and watch videos that I provide and then they follow
up these materials with answering the questions that I give for each link.
Material based questions will show the progress and the critical thinking
questions will foster growing thinking.

Lesson Activities: Students will gather information and research about the
policy they choose. They will then create a presentation where they show
the class their interpretation of the policy. The information presented must
be factual and accurate, and the presentation must be organized and clear to
understand. There will be a rubric provided that will show what exactly is
needed in order to receive a perfect score. This will help students see how
these policies had a bigger effect in the US position in the world and its
influence over it.

Lesson Activities: Students will view a YouTube video that I will provide and
they will take notes on the information they see and hear about. Once they
have their information, they will construct a graphic organizer to show the
different types of efforts provided and practiced by Americans on the home
front during World War I.
