What is Netflix?
Founded in 1997 in Scotts Valley, California by Reed Hastings.
The idea of Netflix came to Hastings when he was forced to pay
$40 in fines on an overdue movie.
A provider of on-demand internet steaming media to North and
South America as well as parts of Europe.

A provider of DVD by mail service in the United States.


Now have over $5.4 billion in assets and employ over 2000 people.
This year, surpassed YouTube as leading online video site.

Why so much interest in Netflix?


It is something that most of us on a day to day basis.

As college students, we are very technologically adept,


Netflix offers a fast, easy, and reliable method for us to get
the video content we seek.
Netflix grew and developed while we grew and developed.
Netflix was one of the leaders in our transition from in store
movie rentals to online streaming.
Ultimately we can all understand and relate too, since its
used in our daily lives.

Whats Netflixs Business Model ?


Uses and combines three business models, while adding

their own touches.


Subscription model
Landlord model
All you can eat model
Combined to allowed its customers to have however many

DVDs they wanted in a month with no late fees as well as


the option to stream video.

Netflixs Competition
The environment is very competitive, yet not many are a big threat
to Netflix.

Their main competitor is Redbox.

Others such as HULU and HBO Go have tried to take some the
market share by providing the same service Netflix does.
Comcast and apple have recently united to challenge Netflix with a
streaming movies option however many of the details have yet to
be released.

Amazon is also launching a video streaming service and following


Netflixs example of creating its own original content.

What sets Netflix from the rest?


The first to establish this kind of service, Netflix basically
invented the market for DVDs by mail and high quality
online video streaming.
Have a much wider ranger of shows, movies,
documentaries, etc compared to their competitors.
One of the first services that allowed access from pretty
much anything with internet access.
Set the standard for the level of convenience and reliability

consumers are looking for.

Netflix Recommendations
Never raise your prices again, hopefully lesson learned.
Update your selection more often.
Maybe one day joining forces with a game console company and

make games playable on demand.


Currently you have the two options of paying $8 for each service
(streaming and in-mail-DVD). We recommend the option of

discounting (for around $12 total) a subscription to both services.

they choose.
Never stop improving video quality and video streaming speeds
that the servers can deliver.

Identifier- An attribute (or group of attributes) whose value is associated with
one and only one entity instance.

For example, Customer Credit Card Information is an identifier of


Customer, because only one Customer instance has a given Customer
Credit Card.

Entity-Relationship Cardinalities
The relationship between customers and the video data is a many-tomany relationship (N:M).
There are no minimum cardinalities between customers and video
data.
One customer can watch many videos (simultaneously too) and a
video can be viewed by very many customers (also simultaneously).
One customer can also have multiple profile entities; this is a one-tomany relationship (1:N) with a maximum cardinality of 5.
The minimum cardinality per customer is 1 profile.
