Howtomakeawiredddwrtintoadhcpforwardingwirelessswitch.
Theseinstructionsassumefamiliaritywithddwrtandintermediatelevelnetworking
concepts.
CRITICAL:Theseinstructionsmaynotbecorrectforsomeversionsofddwrt.Theversion
Irunisv24preSP2[Beta]Build13064(recommended).Ifyourroutersupportsthis
version,Ihighlyrecommendupgradingtoit.Inanyevent,youshouldupgradetothelatest
buildofddwrtforyourpreferredversionbecauseofafairlydevastatingsecurityproblem
discoveredin2009.
Hereiswhatyoushouldget:

Ifyouunderstandthatdrawing,thenyouarehalfwaythere.Ifyouwantallconnectionsto
bewireless,thenyouprobablyarelookingforhowtosetupaddwrtrepeaterbridge.
NotethatIwillrefertotheWiredDHCPRouterasthe"DHCProuter"andtheDDWRT
Routerasthe"ddwrtrouter"below.Also,wewillassumethattheDHCProuterhasalocal
IPaddressof192.168.1.1.
Herearethesteps:
1. Unplugallethernetportsfromyourddwrtrouter.
2. PutapieceoftapeovertheWANportofyourddwrtrouteryoudon'twanttouseit
bymistake.
3. InddwrtofyourddwrtroutergototheBasicSetuptab
ConnectionType:AutomaticConfigurationDHCP
RouterName:SomethingClever
HostName:SomethingUnique
GobackandfillinthatHostName,Iwasn'tkidding.You'llwantittobefilled
whenyoucheckyourDHCProuter'sLANtables.
LocalIPAddress:SomethingoutsidetherangeoftheDHCPallocation,but
onthesamesubnet.ForexampleifyourDHCProuteris192.168.1.1and
handsout50DHCPaddressesfrom192.168.1.101150,thenagoodLocal
IPAddressforyourddwrtroutermightbe192.168.1.151.
Note:ThisallowslessconfigurableDHCProuterstohandoutaDHCPaddress
totherouterfromtheallocatedpoolwithoutworryingaboutaconflict.Ifyou
haveamoreconfigurableDHCProuter,youshouldbeabletoassignthis
addressinthestatictablesoftheDHCProuter,butIhavenottestedthis
arrangement.

unlessyouhavesomethingspecialgoingon,themaskshouldbe
255.255.255.0.

Note:MostDHCProutersgrabDNSserverentriesfromtheproviderbydefault,
sotheDNSconfigurationwillbeforwardedtotheddwrtrouter.Ifyouhave
DNSproblemstakealookattheconfigurationofyourDHCProuter.
DHCPType:DHCPForwarder
DHCPServer:192.168.1.1

4. Inddwrtofyourddwrtrouter,gototheVLANstab.
ForVLAN0,makesureallLANports(e.g."1"through"4")areenabled
(checked)andmakesureAssignedtoBridgeis"LAN".Makesurethatthe
WANport(e.g."W")isNOTenabledforVLAN0.
ForVLAN1,setAssignedtoBridgeto"LAN".

5. Now,makesureyourwirefromyourDHCProuterDOESNOTrunintotheWANport
ofyourddwrtrouterbutinsteadrunsintooneoftheLANports.Letmerepeatthat,
butthistimeinaspecialfont:
MakesureyourwirefromyourDHCProuterDOESNOTrunintotheWANportof
yourddwrtrouterbutinsteadrunsintooneoftheLANports.
6. Makesureanywiredclientsorswitchesthatconnecttoyourddwrtrouterruninto
oneoftheLANportsandNOTtheWANport.
7. Steps5and6shouldbeeasybecauseyounevertookoffthetapecoveringtheWAN
portonyourddwrtrouter.
8. SPECIALNOTES:
1. TheWANIPofyourddwrtrouterwillbe0.0.0.0.Remember,itisnowaclient
DHCPforwarderonaLAN,sotheddwrtrouterdoesnotexistontheWAN!
HencesomethingisawryiftheWANIPofyourddwrtrouterisnot0.0.0.0.
2. IfyoudonotassignastaticIPaddresstoyourddwrtrouterfromtheDHCP
routerthenyourddwrtrouterwillhaveoneaddressontheLANbutwillalso
thinkithastheaddressyouassignedfortheLocalIPAddressinStep3(e.g.
192.168.1.151).IfyoucannotreachyourddwrtrouterusingtheIPaddress
assignedbytheDHCProuter(asreportedintheDHCPtablesthereon),then
yourddwrtroutershouldbereachableattheLocalIPAddressthatyou
assignedinStep3(e.g.192.168.1.151).
9. Whenyouarealldone,itwon'thurttopoweryourddwrtrouterdown,rebootyour
DHCProuter,andthenbootyourddwrtrouter.
