Philosophy of Education
An educators philosophy of education determines the way that their classes will be taught
and what the students will learn and take from it. As a teacher the philosophy I chose to
implement in my class room will have a lasting effect on my students. I believe that students
must come first and everything that is taught must be for the benefit of them. In my opinion there
is not one perfect philosophy on its own and it requires to take certain portions of each to
develop a philosophy that works. Based off of the five prominent teaching philosophies, I would
uses portions of the perennialism and progressivism philosophies. These two philosophies
encompass what a teacher ought to teach in order to ensure success and comprehension to their
students .
Perennialism is based on a core curriculum with themes and questions that endure as time
changes. This philosophy allows for teacher to have direct control of the classroom and to lead
discussions. This is a more traditional approach in which the students learn the same lesson and
are taught as a whole. I believe that in order for the students to have a successful education they
must have a solid foundation with the basic principles and concepts. In order for the students to
do well they have to build up to that success and the only way for them to do so is by having the
real substance and truths that have stayed the same as the times have changed.
Progressivism is a student-centered philosophy that focuses on the interests of the
students. In order for an educator to engage students a real interest on the students behalf must be
present. When a student is interested in a particular subject they tend to pay attention and
actively participate in the lesson which only further helps in the learning process. This
philosophy calls for cooperativeness and the instructor to be an encouragement coach for the
student. When students feel that they are actively involved in the learning process as well as
encouragement from the teacher they want to do well and excel in whatever they are attempting
to accomplish. They want to make their teacher proud.
Combining these two philosophies makes for solid educational foundation. This will not
only help students succeed, as well as making these student-based, with the students individual
interests in mind. By using this philosophy it will make learning interesting and something they
will enjoy doing.
