ROI Return on Investment

by Matthew Walsh, CDT

There has been some talk of how some of our members are not
really aware of what our Product Expo is about. Being that its
about six weeks away, I figured this would be a good time to
bring anyone not in the know up to speed.
Every year our chapter goes through painstaking measures to
put together educational events to make sure the architects,
consultants, and contractors are up to speed on the latest and
greatest trends and design concepts. To cover these topics, we
generally pull from our membership.
The product expo is a way to showcase what we all do and
hopefully fill a void for the need of the design community, weather it be envelope solutions, hardware, facades, etc. Our Expo
committee puts together the educational portion which are not
sales pitches, but real nuts and bolts practical information that
you can take away and put to good use.
Is it open to anyone? Sort of. You must be invited by an exhibitor. If you have never been to one of our Product Expo's, then I
highly recommend checking it out. If you have not been invited
by mid December, or if you are a product rep and wish to exhibit, send David Dixon an email at ddixon@d2marketing.us to get set up.
Regards,
Matthew M Walsh, CDT

Have a safe and happy holiday

Procrastinator's Ball
CSI Kansas City Chapter Conference 2014 Procrastinators Ball
The Red and Black of Green Buildings

The fourth annual, award-winning, Procrastinators Ball education event sponsored by Kansas City Chapter
CSI was held Wednesday, November 12, 2014, in the Regnier Center at Johnson County Community College. The Ball is designed as a last-minute opportunity for busy design and construction professionals to
learn about many complementary subjects under one theme and earn needed AIA/CES continuing education
credits prior to the year-end deadline. It is also a great opportunity for product representatives to show their
value as trusted advisors within their field of expertise. This years event was again managed by Professional
Development Chair, Richard Bartholomew, CSI, CDT, AIA and Committee Member, David Dixon, CSI, CCCA,
CCPR, RRC, RRO.
On a brisk fall morning, 25 designers, specifiers, presenters, students, and constructors braved the chill to
enjoy a continental breakfast, gourmet box lunch, and attend up to eight one-hour educational sessions focusing on the theme of The Red and Black of Green Buildings. The eight sessions included approved programs on understanding the limits of green advocacy and the duty of informed consent, obstacles to adoption
and political views concerning the 2012 IECC, building envelope quality assurance and quality control, new
concepts in LEED v4, the mirage or substance of healthy green buildings, high performance green office
buildings, using CSI standards and formats to specify for LEED v4, and a spirited free form panel discussion
that capped off the day.
Those who stayed for the day, along with as many as nine students who attended the presentations, came
away with helpful information from each session. Our sponsoring vendor had a tabletop display and an opportunity to give a minute or two, proprietary product pitch to the audience as part of its sponsorship fee.
The keynote speech which was given at noon -Add Value to Both You and Your Firm with CSI - was given
by presenter and FY 2013 CSI Institute President Greg Markling, SCIP, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, LEED AP,
NCARB. One of his important points was volunteer your expertise and time to your local CSI chapter since it
will make you, your firm, and your chapter better.
We acknowledge our sincere thanks to JCCC and Robert Dye, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, RRC, LEED AP as our
host, as well as to the attendees and, especially, to each presenter. Our presenters were:
Ujjval Vyas, Ph.D., J.D., CSI, CDT, Principal Alberti Group
Tim Ryan, CBO, Codes Administrator City of Overland Park
Randall Milbourn, CSI, AABA, Managing Member Integrated Weather Barriers
Gregory Markling, SCIP, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, LEED AP, NCARB, Principal - iBIMsolutions
David Shelton, 3PQ, DBIA, AIA, Founder and Principal Design Sense
Taylor Connolly, J,D., Associate Brown & James
We would also like to acknowledge our sponsoring vendor:
James Hardie Kirk Calhoon, CDT, AIA
Feedback is currently being sought from all involved in this years event and anyone interested in contributing
volunteer time or ideas to aid in planning for the 2015 Procrastinators Ball. SAVE THE DATE - - - November
11, 2015 is next years event. Please watch for future announcements. Direct your feedback comments to Richard Bartholomew @ rabarchitect@yahoo.com

Know Before You Build: Ensure Window Performance with

NFRCs Component Modeling Approach
By Tom Herron, LEED Green Associate
Building professionals know there are few complications more frustrating than finding out a projects fenestration fails to meet building energy code after spending precious time and money installing windows, doors
and skylights. As building codes become stricter, the cost of compliance failure will go up, threatening to put
projects over budget and behind schedule.
Fortunately, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) exists to help architects and builders avoid
potential overruns. For the last 25 years, NFRC has provided building professionals and consumers with fair,
accurate and credible fenestration performance ratings that allow them to compare products on an applesto-apples basis.
NFRCs ratings procedures appear in model building energy codes like ASHRAE 90.1 and the International
Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The ENERGY STAR program for residential windows also requires
NFRC ratings for products to qualify for the program.
NFRC rates participating products for:
Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which measures a products ability to block heat from the sun;
U-factor, which measures a products ability to prevent heat loss; and
Visible Transmittance (VT), which measures the amount of light that comes through a product.
For residential products, NFRC generates and attaches temporary labels to individual windows, doors and
skylights. For larger commercial projects, however, NFRC uses a different process to rate fenestration,
called the Component Modeling Approach (CMA).
Checking Compliance with CMA
Architects and builders responsible for fenestration energy ratings on a project can turn to NFRCs Component Modeling Approach (CMA) to calculate energy performance values before ever setting foot on the job
site. CMA simplifies commercial code compliance through an easy-to-use computer program called CMAST.
CMA users can select individual fenestration components from CMASTs database to find out the energy
performance of site-assembled windows, skylights, curtain wall, store fronts and doors. Once builders select
and submit a combination of frame, spacer and glazing, NFRC issues a CMA Label Certificate containing entire-project ratings information in a single document. CMAST users then file the Label Certificate at the
jobsite to help project managers and code officials easily inspect and approve fenestration code compliance.
A copy of the Label Certificate is also available online at NFRCs CMAST online portal.
A study by the Heschong-Mahone Group found that projects using CMA in California had an increase in
compliance margins of 11.7 percent over default calculation methods. By using CMA, architects and builders
can avoid the risk of failing applicable building codes and ensure that their projects remain on time and within budget.
