Manage your passwords

Generating and managing multiple passwords just got a lot easier
SKILL LEVEL
Taking things further

IT WILL TAKE
10 minutes

YOULL NEED
iPad, 1Password,
Dropbox account

Password management
is an increasingly vital part
of our digital lives. Many of
the websites you interact
with require you to create logins and
passwords, and any app that signs you
in to an online service will need you
to enter login details as well.
1Password (12.99 / $17.99) is a
popular app that can not only help you
generate secure passwords that are far
safer than your pets name or your
birthday which a worrying number of
people use as passwords but also
manage all kinds of other sensitive data.
You can store credit card details,
membership numbers, software licences
and much more, and protect them all
with a master password. They can be
synced securely using iCloud, Dropbox
or locally via Wi-Fi with 1Password for
Mac, PC or iPhone, so your data is always
available but only to you. Hollin Jones

1Password can generate and store all manner of secure passwords and other data and sync it across devices.

HOW TO | GENERATE A SECURE PASSWORD

1 Open the generator

After setting a master password on first

launch, tap the plus arrow at the top of the
Categories column and choose the Password
option. This will open a new password generator
window. This will be able to generate a random
password that is impossible to guess and very
hard for a malicious hacker to crack, so its great
for keeping accounts secure.

4|

2 Customise password 3 Use the password

Tap the key icon, then tap Show
Password Recipe to customise it. The app will
have already generated a random password but
you can make it even more secure by raising the
length, digits and symbols sliders. You can even
disallow repeated characters. If the password is
to be associated with a website, enter its URL in
the website field below. Then tap Done.

Tap the Browser button at the top left

of the main screen to open the secure browser.
Navigate to the website you just created a
password for and then tap the key icon at
the top right corner. Tap to log in using the
password, which will place this password into
the relevant field. You can also enter credit
card and identity info using this window.

1Password | IMPROVE SECURITY

HOW TO | STORE OTHER KINDS OF DATA

1 Store bank details

From the Categories menu you can

choose to add all kinds of data; these are stored
in categories and fully searchable. Tap Add and
then tap Bank Account. Enter all the relevant
details to store them inside this new entry. You
dont have to fill in every field, just the ones you
have information for. Then tap Done and the
account details are stored securely.

2 Store a credit card

Repeat the process but this time choose

a credit card and enter all the relevant details.
You can add different fields for different types
of item, so here for example you can enter credit
limits, expiry dates and so on. Tap Done and
the account is stored. You will now find that
when you are browsing using the built-in web
browser, this card is available to you for autofill.

3 Set up folders

If you end up with a lot of stored items,

it can make sense to organise them more
efficiently. Go to the Organize section by
tapping the folder icon and tap Edit to add
a new folder, then name it. Then from the main
items list, select any item and scroll down to
see options. Tap Move to Folder and you will
be able to add it to the folder you just created.

HOW TO | CREATE VAULTS AND SYNC PASSWORDS

1 Create a new vault

You might not always want everything

stored in a single database, or vault. Tap the
settings icon at the bottom left then go to the
Vaults section. Tap Add Vault to add a new
database and you can now add and sync items
to this vault separately from the first. So you
could have one for personal stuff and one for
work, for example, synced via Dropbox.

2 Sync your data

From the Settings section, select the

Vault you want to sync, then tap the Sync option
and choose Dropbox. Youll need a free Dropbox
account and to sign into it on your iPad. Once
the two are connected tap Sync Now and a
remote file is created securely in your Dropbox
account. You will be able to sync this with
1Password on your iPhone, Mac or PC.

3 Beef up security

From the Settings section, go to the

Security tab. Here you can change the master
password, force a repeat request for the
password at specific intervals, use a PIN code
to add a layer of security, force the app to
lock when exited and force a clearing of the
clipboard so no data remains accidentally
available after you have come out of the app.

Theres a limit to our

powers of recall when
it comes to
complicated
alphanumeric passwords and this
has led to many of us reusing our
passwords at multiple sites. Hackers
are only too happy to exploit our
habit of reusing passwords, so
whatever you do, dont use the
same password for your email,
Facebook and online bank account.
When they crack a users password
a hacker will immediately try the
same password on other accounts.
A single, highly encrypted master
password can help you avoid the
temptation of reusing passwords,
while making it easy to log in with
them. Dashlane Password Manager
(Free) uses 256bit AES encryption.
To use it, you must enter your
master password whenever youre

at a site into which you want to log

securely. Dashlane can also save
your address, date of birth, tax,
passport number and bank details
for you in a secure folder. Whenever
you need them, you log into your
Dashlane account and pull up the
pertinent details.
For 20.99 / $29.99 a year you
can subscribe to the Premium
service, with syncing across all your
devices, secure account back-up
and access to your passwords via
the website. Rosie Hattersley

With Dashlane, you only need to remember one password, but

your security will be even better than ever.

HOW TO | SECURE YOUR iPAD LOGINS

1 Set up a password

Dashlane stores your login details for

websites and online stores. It replaces these
passwords and usernames with a single, much
more secure master password. Your first step is
therefore to choose a strong password as your
master the longer the better, as this makes it
harder to crack. You must include upper and
lower-case characters and at least one number.

6|

online
2 Add sites to Dashlane 3 Autocomplete
forms securely
Now tap Start using Dashlane and, on the
Add Passwords screen, tap the logo for a website
you usually need to sign in at. Type your
username and password for that site then
choose a category such as Shopping, Social
Media or Personal Finance. Tap Add to add
details of other accounts. You can type in a web
address for sites that arent on Dashlanes list.

Dashlane can fill in online address and payment

card forms for you automatically. Enter these
details into Dashlane first, then when you visit
sites you want to shop at or enter your address
details, just tap the Dashlane logo in fields you
want to auto-complete. Youll need to type your
Dashlane master password first.

If you find it
uncomfortable having

it is to have someone read
everything you write.
This is exactly what can happen if
you log on to an unsecure internet
connection such as a Wi-Fi hotspot
with no password required. And if
someone can read what you type
such as your passwords they can
use them for their own gain.
Using a VPN (virtual private
network) offers a much more secure
alternative. It essentially provides a
tunnel through which you connect
to a web server. Because of the
shield, your iPad doesnt appear as a
device on the network. Of course,
being invisible online is a very
attractive proposition if you want to

safeguard your privacy from cyber

snoops and advertising trackers.
As well as providing a VPN,
F-Secures Freedome app (2.99 /

address, so no-one knows where
you are when you log on. The
downside, of course, is that you
cant take advantage of Location

consider that temporarily not being
able to get turn-by-turn directions
is an inconvenience worth putting

HOW TO | GET ONLINE ANONYMOUSLY WITH FREEDOME

1 Toggle protection

Freedome operates in portrait mode and

has very simple set-up and reporting screens. In
fact, as the app explains when you launch it, you
mainly need to toggle settings and profiles from
Off to On to use them. Once enabled, youll
notice that the number of suspect websites
blocked and web traffic protected is shown in
the rings around the On/Off button.

2 VPN profile changes

To set up Freedomes VPN, tap the large

circle in the middle of the screen, then tap Yes,
lets continue to allow Freedome to use Safari to
retrieve the VPN profile from F-Secures site. Tap
Continue to Settings, then tap Install > Install
Now to confirm the change. Youll then need to
enter your iPad passcode. Tap Done when the
VPN profile has been installed.

3 Mask your movements

Your iPad is now connected to its own

network, so it cant be hacked. To disguise its
location, tap the lozenge at the bottom showing
Location: United Kingdom then, on the next
screen, choose a virtual location from the list.
Changing your location is useful if you want to
use a streaming service (eg) Netflix, or access
websites not available in your country.

YOULL NEED
iPad, DocWallet

Unsurprisingly, mobile
device theft has risen
massively over the years.
It does, then, pay to keep
your gadgets locked down from
unsavoury types; while not much can
be done about the actual theft of your
device, steps can be taken to safeguard
the contents of your iPad if it falls into
the wrong hands.
DocWallet (Free, with IAP) is capable
of securing your most confidential files
whether its bank statements, contracts
or medical documents so only you
have access to them. DocWallet uses
end-to-end encryption so only you can
see the data youve stored on it, and the
really great thing about it is that because
its all stored in the cloud, you can
access it anywhere and from any device
not just an iPad. DocWallet also
supports a variety of formats, including
PDF, Excel and more. Nick Odantzis

Its reassuring to know that DocWallet is capable of keeping your most confidential files for your eyes only.

HOW TO | GET TO GRIPS WITH DOCWALLET

1 Secure password

The first time you use the app youll need

to create a secure password, ensuring you make
it as strong as possible, using a combination of
letters and numbers, both upper and lower
case ideally words you dont normally use
anywhere else. DocWallet will give you an
indication of how secure your password is using
the Password security level marker underneath.

8|

2 Files and folders

Before you can start using DocWallet,

you need to enter your password. Type it in
and tap Unlock to gain access. Now youre in,
youll see a menu on the left which is where
your files and folders are stored. To open a file,
tap on it. You can add files to existing folders
or create a new one. To add a folder, tap Add
> New Folder and give it a name.

3 Modify files

To move, rename or delete a file or folder,

simply tap-hold on it to display a menu. To
change the layout of the menu, you can order
files or folders by date, name and more by
tapping Sort in the bottom of the menu.
Dont forget, at any time you can quickly
lock DocWallet by tapping the lock symbol
in the top right corner of the screen.

DocWallet | IMPROVE SECURITY

HOW TO | IMPORT YOUR FILES IN DOCWALLET

1 Import photos

To add a file tap the Add button

underneath the main menu. A pop-up menu
gives you three options to choose from. Select
Import Photo from the menu. If DocWallet
isnt able to access your photos, youll need to
enable it in your privacy settings. Go to Settings
> Photos > DocWallet and toggle the switch
next to it to turn it on.

2 Add folder

Youll now see the images stored on

your iPad as they would appear in the Photos
application. Tap one or more to select the
images you want to import, then tap the tick
button above to add them to the folder. To
add a folder, tap the Add button once more
and select New Folder. Give your folder an
appropriate name and tap OK.

3 Other files

Adding other files to DocWallet is a little

different you cant do it within the application.
To add files such as PDFs, tap and hold on the
file to display a prompt. Select Open in
DocWallet, then when DocWallet has launched,
type your password. The app will ask you to give
the document a name (if you want to change it)
and where to store it. Finally, tap Done.

HOW TO | MAKE NOTES ON PDFS

1 Annotation menu

DocWallet enables you to annotate PDFs

(but no other files, yet). To start adding notes
to a PDF, find the document in DocWallet and
open it, then tap the icon of a pencil in the
top right corner. This will reveal a menu of
annotation tools, such as the ability to add
a square, write text and even create speech
bubbles. To start using one, just tap it.

2 Making shapes

If you want to type text, simply tap on

the screen, or if its a shape tap and drag to
increase the size of the shape. At this point its
worth mentioning that DocWallets annotation
abilities are somewhat limited, and hence there
is no ability to undo changes once theyve been
made so make sure you have another version
saved elsewhere if youre planning to do this.

3 Find words

When youve finished annotating, tap

the tick button above. Once youve finished
annotating altogether, you can remove the
menu by tapping the cross icon. DocWallets
editing options also come with the ability
to search words in PDFs. To do this, tap the
magnifier icon, type in a word, tap Search and
DocWallet will highlight the word on the page.

Your iPad is a precious thing.

Apart from all the personal
information stored on it,
iPads are not cheap and
if one gets lost or stolen it can be very
stressful. Luckily Apple provides a bunch
of tools via iCloud that can help you to
find, message and even remotely wipe
an iPad if it has been somehow lost.
It does this by connecting the physical
hardware serial numbers of your device to
your Apple ID and using the GPS location
technology built into every iOS device to

triangulate exactly where it is. If your iPad

has a cellular connection as well, locating
it will be possible as long as it still has
battery and signal. Otherwise it will work
as long as it is connected to a Wi-Fi
network, which also sends location
information when on.
In the forthcoming iOS 8, the device
will send a ping of its last known location
right before the battery dies, giving you
a better chance of finding it. So if your
device gets lost, dont despair lets find
out how to keep it safe. Hollin Jones

left it at someones house or even
had it stolen, but if it still has battery and
an internet connection of any kind it will
show up on a map inside the app. Wi-Fi

especially so.
2

The system is able to transmit the
battery level of your device and
display it here. This is more important than
you may think because it shows how long
you have left to track it before the battery
dies and stops transmitting.

Find your iPad | IMPROVE SECURITY

HOW TO | FIND A LOST iPAD THROUGH iCLOUD.COM

1 Switch on the service 2 Log into iCloud

On your iPad, go to Settings, then to the
iCloud tab and switch on Find My iPad. This
binds the iPads hardware using a unique
number to your Apple ID, so you will of course
have to be signed up and signed in to iCloud on
the device as well. In iOS 7, this also enables the
Activation Lock feature whereby the device cant
be erased or reactivated without your Apple ID
and password, so its a good thing to switch on
for maximum security.

Now imagine your iPad has been lost or

stolen. On any browser on a computer, go to
icloud.com and log in using your Apple ID. You
can also do this through the dedicated and free
Find My iPhone / iPad app on an iPhone or iPad.
Click on the Find My iPhone icon and if your
device is switched on and has an internet or
cellular connection, it should appear on the
map on your screen. If several of your registered
devices appear, select the correct one.

3 Turn on Lost Mode

If the location looks unfamiliar to you

or you are worried about someone potentially
accessing personal data on your iPad, you can
activate Lost Mode by clicking the button of
that name in the tool panel at the top right. You
will be prompted to create a passcode and
when you do, the iPad will be remotely locked
using this code. This will also display a custom
message on the device. This gives someone a
chance to contact you to arrange its return.

Activation Lock

4 Erase the iPad

If all else fails you can remotely erase the

iPad using the Erase button. This will erase all
data starting now if the device is online, or as
soon as it is next online. After erasing, the iPad
will display a message as defined by you,
perhaps asking for the return of the now-erased
device. If you do get it back it can be unlocked
using your Apple ID and restored from an iCloud
backup. If you have a cellular plan, contact your
network to cancel it.

5 If you sell a device

If you sell or lend a device to someone

else its important to remove it from your iCloud
account first or it will continue to be bound to
your Apple ID. Go to Settings > iCloud on your
iPad and turn off Find My iPad. Then log in to
iCloud and check that the device has been
removed. You can also turn off all iCloud
services on the iPad and then manually wipe it,
which is always a good idea anyway if youre
going to sell it, to protect your personal data.

In iOS 7, when you

activate Find My
iPad, you also
switch on a great
feature called
Activation Lock.
A response to the
fact that iOS devices make tempting
targets for thieves, its designed to make
reselling devices illegally much more
difficult, if not impossible. With
Activation Lock, your Apple ID and
password are required before anyone
can turn off Find My iPad, sign out
of iCloud on the device or erase or
reactivate the iPad. So even if someone
gets hold of your iPad for any reason
and you arent able to get it back, you
can be sure that even if they try to erase
the device for resale all they will get is
a persistent message saying the device
has been deactivated, which they cant
get rid of. All in all, a win for law and
order and more peace of mind for you.

While you can do some of this with
Apples own Find My iPad app, Lookout
has a few extra tricks up its sleeve, such as
a feature to tell you whether your device is
jailbroken and detect any malicious code
that may be running, or backup your

contacts to a non-Apple destination.

If you choose to upgrade to the
Premium version for 1.99 / $2.99 per

which emails you as soon as the app
detects any suspicious activity such as
the removal of a SIM card.
Theres also the ability to sound an

Find your iPad | IMPROVE SECURITY

HOW TO | WORK WITH LOOKOUT

1 Check the settings

After installing the app and creating

a free account, open the app and click on the
Settings icon at the top right of the screen.
Start by enabling security, which gives the app
permission to monitor processes on the iPad.
Then enable Signal Flare. This automatically
saves the location of the device just before it
runs out of battery so in the event of loss or
theft you can at least see its last known
location and hopefully track it down.

2 Enable backup

Click on the third button to enable

contact backup, which uploads your contact
details once a day to Lookouts servers. If you
log in to your account on the website you can
view and download this data, which is handy
for example if you have lost your iPad while
away from home and need to retrieve a phone
number. With a paid account you can also
enable uploading of all your photos from
your iPad to the cloud.

3 Send a message

If you have lost your device you can look

up its location from lookout.com and see its
current location if it is connected to the internet,
or its last known location if it has either been
switched off, run out of battery or is not online.
You can send a message to display on the device
too, including your contact details and some
text. This works from the website or from any
iOS device on which you are logged in, if for
example you still have your iPhone.

4 Run a security check 5 Re-download contacts 6 Upgrade for more

The Security section lets you check three
things. The first is that your system is up to date
and not jailbroken, and the third is that no
malicious processes are running. Its only on
jailbroken devices that there is a risk of rogue
code running, but its worth a look just in case.
Location services do need to be enabled for the
tracking features to work, so make sure these are
on by going into Settings > Privacy > Location
Services and checking.

In the Backup section you can enable

automatic daily backup of contacts and if you
have upgraded to Premium, photos as well.
These are also possible using Apples iCloud,
of course, though by doing it this way you add
a second layer of security and also the ability
to access contact information from any web
browser without having to re-sync it to an iOS
device. In short, you can never have too many
backups just in case.

If you click on the Theft Alerts section you

get the option to upgrade the app and activate
extra features. As well as photo backup you can
have up to three iOS and Android devices tied
to your account and also receive an automatic
email alert whenever anyone messes with
your device, for example removing its SIM or
activating airplane mode, and this email contains
location information. The upgrade is 1.99 /
$2.99 per month or 20.99 / $29.99 per year.

2 Set up the iPhone

Place the iPhone horizontally, so its

looking at the surveillance area. Note the CID
(Connection ID): this is an eight-digit number
displayed in an orange box on the right of the
AtHome Video Streamer app. You need this
number to connect the iPad app to the iPhone
app. Make sure the iPhone has enough charge,
or is plugged in, because recording drains the
battery rapidly (you can tap the Screen Off icon
to consume less energy).

3 AtHome Video Camera

Now open the App Store on your iPad

and search for an app called AtHome Camera
Free. This separate app connects to the AtHome
Video Streamer app running on the iPhone.
When you first open the AtHome Video Camera
you are asked to login with your AtHome
account and Password (this is not the same
password as you created in Step 1). Click Create
Account, enter your email and a password, and
tap Create Account.

Now that you have both AtHome apps

installed on the iPhone and iPad, its time to
connect the two. Switch to the AtHome Camera
app on the iPad and tap the Menu icon in the
top right. Now tap Add by CID and enter the
eight-digit CID number displayed on the iPhone.
Enter Admin into the Username field and the
password you picked in Step 1 into the
Password field. Now tap the Save icon (located
in the upper right of the Add Camera window).

By default you also hear all the audio

from the iPhones built in microphone. You can
silence the iPhone by tapping the Mute icon in
the app on the iPad. You can also remotely
speak through the iPhone by tapping the Talk
icon: the line through the icon is removed, and
now you can talk into the AtHome Camera app
on your iPad, with the audio coming out of the
iPhone. Tap Mute and Talk again to turn off the
audio functions.

The iPhone should now appear with the

title AtHomeStreamer in the main window on
your iPad. Below it is a green button and the
word Online. Tap it to connect the iPad to the
iPhone and start watching the remote video
feed. The feed is live and in real time (although
there might be a small delay depending on your
connection). You should also be able to hear
sound captured from the iPhones built-in
microphone through the iPad.

If the scene is dark and you want to light

it up, tap the Flash icon in the AtHome Camera
app. This option activates the LED flash on the
iPhone to light up the scene. You can also take
photographs by tapping the Camera icon at the
bottom right of the video screen. These are also
saved directly to the AtHomeCam album in the
Photos app. You can switch to full-screen mode
by tapping the Full-Screen icon at the bottomleft of the video display.

You can use the Switch button to flip

between the iPhones iSight and FaceTime
cameras to record in both directions. If you see
something you want to save, tap the red Record
button to start recording the action. Tap the
Record button again to stop capturing video,
and the AtHome Camera app displays The
Video Clip has been Saved to the Photo Album.
Tap on Photos > Albums > AtHomeCam to view
the video clips afterwards.

Once you are happy with the AtHome

Camera setup you can set motion alarms. These
send you notifications when the app notices
any movement. Tap Menu > Motion Alarms and
set the Switch option to On. Now choose a
Sensitivity and Interval and tap Save and Save
again to turn on the alarm. Now when anything
moves in front of the iPhone you get an alert to
watch the action on your iPad. Tap Quit if you
want to disconnect from the iPhone.

cameras (CCTV) have been
a dependable feature in
public life for many years.
Now, with prices falling, many people
are choosing to install CCTV cameras in
and around their own home and
business premises as well.
A CCTV camera outside the house
acts as a deterrent and in the
unfortunate case that you are burgled it
enables police to identify suspects.
Internal camera systems also help you
keep an eye on young children
(especially babies) from different parts
of the house. These baby cams are the
main reason people want to install
CCTV in the home.

There are two types of cameras available

to the public. You can install a traditional
analogue CCTV camera system and
hook it up to a computer, but they are
expensive to purchase and install. Most
people are opting for the newer IP
(internet protocol) cameras. These
newer cameras are like webcams for the
home, and they connect to your local
network (or the wider internet) and you
can use apps to monitor them.

A wireless IP camera, such as the
Zavio F3108, connects directly to your
wireless router, which can be easier than
running an Ethernet cable through the
home. The Zavio F3210 itself is relatively
easy to set up; you connect it directly to
the router using a standard RJ45 cable,
and connect it to the mains. Open

iCamViewer | IMPROVE SECURITY

HOW TO | CONNECT YOUR iPAD TO AN IP CAMERA

1 Set up the camera

Start by setting up the IP camera and

connecting it to the network. Youll need to
follow the manufacturers instructions, but
typically you physically connect the camera to
your router using a standard (RJ45) Ethernet
cable and use Safari > Bookmarks > Bonjour to
open the web interface. Here youll find the
cameras IP address and can change the
password settings. Make sure you note the IP
address, username, password and port settings.

2 Using iCamViewer

With the camera set up, its time to hook

it up to the iPad, open the App Store and
download iCamViewer. The app opens to display
a sidebar on the left with a bunch of great video
tutorials. Here you can find Help, Setup & Intro
videos. The Media icon at the bottom also takes
you to another range of blogs and videos. These
are fantastic if you want to get up to speed with
the finer details of setting up CCTV in the home,
once youve finished this tutorial.

4 Choose a make/model 5 Watch the video

For iCamViewer to work it needs to know
which camera you are using. Tap Vendor and
use the wheel to choose the manufacturer of
the IP camera. Confirm the vendor by tapping
the white tick above the Vendor (not the one at
the top of the window next to Configure
Camera). Now tap Model and choose the type of
camera you are using. Tap the white tick above
the Model to confirm it, and tap the white tick
next to Configure Camera to save the settings.

You will now see live footage from the IP

camera displayed on the iPad screen. Doubletap the display to remove the on-screen controls
and view a full screen of the surveillance area
captured in the camers field of view. You can
add additional cameras by tapping the Add icon
(at the top right of the screen). With multiple
cameras configured you can swipe left and right
to move between them. Tap Home to stop
monitoring the camera.

3 Configure the camera

Tap the Viewer icon in the bottom row.

Now tap the Settings icon (the cog in the topleft) to start setting up an IP camera. First enter
a name this can be anything you like to
identify the camera. Now enter the IP address
(this can be a web URL or four numbers
separated by dots, such as 192.168.0.16.) Next
enter the username and password for the IP
camera. These are typically both admin by
default, but you should change them.

6 Delete camera

If you decide that you no longer want an

IP camera to be attached to your iPad, tap
Viewer and slide left or right to pick the
unwanted camera. Now tap Settings > Delete
This Camera and Delete Camera. All of the
cameras settings are removed. You must have at
least one camera set up in the iCamViewer app
at any one time. If you want to remove all
cameras, use the Add button to add a new
camera with blank settings and delete the rest.

Our roundup of the hottest products out now for your iPad

Evutec Karbon S Snap Case for iPad

+++++
60 Evutec, evutec.com

This Kevlar case for the iPad Air probably isnt bulletproof (though we admit to
having not entirely tested this), but it is almost unbelievably thin and light. Its a
simple clip-on rear shell for the iPad Air, but adds almost no noticeable thickness
to the device, and almost no weight. Theres a lovely, high-quality smooth feel
with a subtle texture to it, too though its maybe just a tad slippery. It stays on
securely and accommodates Apples Smart Cover. It may be not the most
protective case, but thats okay. The catch? 70 for a very simple case. If you have
money to spare, its very nice, but we wouldnt recommend it for most.

Knomo Knomad Mini Power

+++++
119 Knomo, knomobags.com

This organiser for the iPad mini folds out to reveal a plethora of pockets and
holders, including a microfibre-lined slot for the iPad mini itself. It also comes with
a slimline 5,000mAh pack (along with Lightning and USB cables) that tucks into it
and is capable of getting an iPad mini Retina to not far off full charge. Like all
Knomo products, its really nice made though lets face it, youd expect that for
119. Being made of chunky, protective canvas inside and out except for the lined
pockets when you fill it up with stuff (pens, cables, phone, iPad, battery, cards) it
gets pretty chunky and heavy. As an organiser, its fine were not sure just how
many people will get over 100-worth of utility out of it, really. It does feature
Knomos unique ID system, though, so it can be returned to you if lost.

Bayan Audio Soundbook GO

+++++
80 bayanaudio.com

Portable Bluetooth speakers have taken over the world! This smart little option
from Bayan Audio isnt the cheapest out there, but its quite reasonable given its
lovely build quality and strong sound. The book part of its title refers to the travel
cover which folds closed over the speakers at the front, helping its slanted design
to stand up when opened, and turning the device off when closed thus
avoiding wasted battery (it offers nine hours of music playback). Most importantly,
the audio quality is good. Perhaps not great, and its held back by its small size, of
course, but we were impressed by it. Theres reasonable guts in the bass, and
generally good clarity in the treble, all without washing out the mid-range.
It can go damn loud, too.

The Creative Sound BlasterAxx AXX 200 is no ordinary Bluetooth speaker.

Its small, slim, compact and includes a built-in battery that can last for up

connectivity options, including USB and mini USB ports, analogue audio
inputs/outputs and a microSD card slot.
Oh, and not to mention front and rear microphones, a custom quad-core

330 Beats by Dre, uk.beatsbydre.com

The Beats sound darn good; the bass pleasantly thumps the ears and high
notes delightfully twill in the latest pop songs. But the way you hear the
songs isnt how theyre intended; the bass is enhanced to the point of
dulling the mids and highs.
Yes, they might look trendy, but for this amount of money wed expect a
much better quality of sound reproduction.

Xync with Lightning Connector

+++++
30 Moshi, moshi.com

The Xync is a handy travel gadget. Its small enough to fit in your pocket, or
you can latch it to your bag with the snap hook. A Lightning cable folds
out and unwraps from the body, and a USB connector pushes out from its
centre. Its ideal if you need a USB-to-Lightning cable but dont relish
getting your regular lead tangled up in transit. An enclosed compartment
conceals holders for two spare sim cards and a removal tool too, so its
great for international travellers who need to switch SIMs while abroad.

AluPen Digital
+++++
40 Just Mobile, just-mobile.com

Steve Jobs was famously hostile about using styluses with mobile devices,
believing your fingers should be sufficient. But if you dont share his view,
you might be interested in this aluminium fine-point stylus.
Running on a single AAA battery, the pen and its 1.8mm nib feels just
like a ballpoint. It works on most capacitive screens, including those used
by iOS devices, and it doesnt need pairing. Its great if you need to write or
sketch with greater precision, or simply prefer to tap-type your messages
with a stylus.

for small businesses.
One option is to get the new PayPal
Here card reader (69.95). This device
connects to an iPad via Bluetooth, and
makes it a breeze to take Visa, Maestro and

person making the payment does not
need a PayPal account.
PayPal Here is a great option for small

time-saving tools across all your apps
when iOS 8 makes its bow. Nick Peers

Discover SwiftKey Notes keyboard in preparation for the arrival of SwiftKey Keyboard when iOS 8 is launched.

HOW TO | USE SWIFTKEY NOTE

1 First steps

Once installed, fire up the app and run

through the quickfire tutorial to familiarise
yourself with how the app works. Once you find
yourself at the main screen, tap + New Note to
create your first note. Give your note a title and
then start typing. Youll see suggestions appear
as you type, but dont expect SwiftKey to be
too clever at this early stage.

24 |

2 Predictive tips

For longer words, start typing the first

few letters of a word and see if SwiftKey is able
to suggest the correct one initially you may
need to type four or even five letters before
its able to provide the suggestion you want.
If it is, tap one of the three words suggested
to select it, or tap Space to select the
highlighted word in the middle.

3 Speed things up

SwiftKey will quickly learn frequentlyused words you favour and it should be able to
better anticipate your needs more quickly as
time progresses. It should also become capable
of suggesting the right word even before you
start to type it, so before entering anything
check to see if SwiftKey has the correct word
lined up, then simply tap the word to insert it.

HOW TO | DO MORE WITH SWIFTKEY NOTE

1 Master autocorrect

By default auto-capitalisation at the

beginning of sentences is switched on, and
corrections are automatically made as you
type tap the Backspace key to reject any made
in error. To add unrecognised words to the
dictionary, type the word carefully, but before
you tap Space, youll see the word appear in
the left-hand suggestion box: tap it to add it.

2 Style up your text

SwiftKey Note allows you to apply limited

styling to your notes: bold, italic, underlined
and strikethrough text, plus you can set up a
bulleted list and change the indentation of
paragraphs. To access these features, simply
place your finger over the suggested word list
and swipe to the left. Styles can be set up
before you type, or applied to selected text.

3 Change settings

Return to the main screen and tap the

cog-like button in the top left-hand corner
to access SwiftKeys settings. Link into your
Evernote account from here, change your
language if necessary and tap Advanced to
change settings like the Space keys behaviour
and make suggestions appear inline rather than
via the prediction bar above your keyboard.

HOW TO | STAY ORGANISED WITH SWIFTKEY NOTE

1 Put your notes in order 2 Use notebooks

All of your notes are accessible from
the left-hand pane of the main SwiftKey Notes
screen, and are sorted by when they were last
accessed. You can filter the list using the Search
notes box, or quickly delete an unwanted note
by swiping its entry left and tapping Delete. Tap
a note to view a preview in the right-hand pane
from here you can edit and share the note.

SwiftKey organises your notes into

notebooks. By default, all notes are stored in a
single notebook, which will be called SwiftKey
Notes. To change which notebook a note is
stored in, open the note and tap the notebook
icon at the top to pick a different notebook.
Create new notebooks from the Notebooks
tab on the main screen.

3 Make use of tags

SwiftKey Note also lets you add tags to

your notes to enable you to search and filter
notes using keywords. Tap the tag button while
editing a note to assign existing tags to the note
if youve connected your Evernote account
youll find your Evernote tags here too. To create
new tags, or filter your notes by tag, switch to

When Awesome Notes launches it
requests access to your iPad Calendar and Task
List. If you click OK, your existing events will be
imported. Numbers alongside the coloured
organiser tabs show how many entries there
are for each category. Tap a category to open
it, then tap + to create a new entry. Type your
entry and add a date, if applicable. You can also
append items; tap the paperclip at the bottom
of the note and choose Photos, Location, etc.

When you create an entry, you can assign

it a category such as Work. There are plenty of
categories To see hidden ones, scroll down
the organiser on the left. Youll see entries such
as Study, Recipe and Thoughts. Edit them by
tapping a category label and overwriting the
Title and changing the assigned color and icon.
Tap Done to apply the changes. To reorder
them, tap the folder icon at the bottom and
drag items up and down the Edit Folder List.

3 Sketch an idea

You arent limited to text notes or memos

in Awesome Note. You can create drawings too.
To create a sketch, tap Quick Note (next to the
Calendar) and use your finger to start drawing.
Options to change the pen colour and thickness
can be accessed by tapping the chevron at the
bottom. To erase a section, tap the rubber icon
to the right of the pen. To undo an addition, tap
the back arrow at the far left of the sketching
menu. Tap Save to Notes when youve finished.

More notes

4 Take and tag photos

Another brilliant feature of Awesome

Note is that you can take photos from within
the app. Tap the camera icon to launch the
iPads camera. The photo will be saved to your
Camera Roll if you allow Awesome Note to do
so. The photo will appear on the pinboard. Tap
it and type a title, then tap No Category and
choose a category to add it to. To take a photo
within a note, first open or create the note,
then tap the paperclip and tap Camera.

5 Prioritise your tasks

Its all very well logging lots of to-dos

and appointments, but its not always clear
which tasks you should tackle first. Helpfully,
you can view Awesome Note entries by due
date, priority and most recent addition. To do
this, tap All Notes (above the organiser), then
tap Sort By at the bottom of the pinboard area.
Choose Due Date, Name or Priority (oddly, this is
its star rating). To change a task from Incomplete
to Done, tap its Due Date then tap Done.

You can import

notes from Google
Drive or Evernote
by enabling these
options in
Awesome Notes
Settings and then
logging in to your respective accounts.
Tap the Settings (cog) icon at the
bottom left of Awesome Note and scroll
down to Sync & Transfer. Tap the app
you want to use and its login screen will
appear. If youre already signed in to
your account (as you will be for Google
Drive if you use Gmail on your iPad), just
tap Go to Drive or Go to Evernote. You
can now sync content by tapping the
sync icon at the bottom left of the
screen and tapping the app you want
to use. You can also sync Awesome Note
with iTunes so your notes are backed
up. Go to Settings and, under Backup
& Restore, tap iTunes File Sharing >
Create a New Backup.

HOW TO | CONTACT THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW

1 Signing in

If youre not already using Google+, youll

need to sign up for an account. When you first
start using Hangouts youll automatically be
signed into your account, if youve previously
accessed Google+. If not just type your account
name and password to log in. If youre using
multiple accounts and want to pick a particular
one for Hangouts, when you come to the Get
Started prompt when you open the app, simply
toggle the accounts you want to use with it.

2 Editing your account

To add an account that isnt yet

connected to Hangouts, tap Add Another
Account and sign in. If your new account
doesnt have a personalised profile, you can
set that up now. Choose to add a photo when
prompted; either add an existing one from your
iPad, or you can snap a new one. Either way,
once your profile photo is added, tap Next and
you will be logged in and any conversations
youve previously had with people will appear.

3 Send a message

Any conversations youve previously had

with people using the messenger window in
Gmail will now appear in the app, with people
on the left and the conversation on the right
(see the screen grab on the opposite page). Tap
a person on the left to see the conversation and
the messaging history. To send a message, type
it in the text box and hit the green arrow button.
You can add photos, emoji, and even your
current location by hitting the paperclip icon.

Other options

4 Hanging out

To start having a conversation with

someone new, tap the pencil and paper icon
next to your profile pic and choose a person
either type their name in the To: box, or select
them from the list of Suggested People. If you
want to have a group Hangout, add more than
one person in the To: field. All those people will
then appear under an individual entry in the
conversation list window to the left. Now when
you type and send a message they will all see it.

5 Video calling

Hangouts allows you to make regular

calls to mobiles or landlines for a small fee, or
alternatively you can make video calls to people
in your contacts list for free. To use the latter,
simply go to a conversation window and tap the
three-dot icon in the top right corner and tap
Video to start a call. To have a group video chat,
do the same thing within a group Hangout. To
make a regular call, tap Voice instead, though
youll need credit on your account to do this.

There are many

messaging apps
available Apples
own Messages app
comes built into
your iPad, allowing
you to send
messages to friends in your contacts list,
though theres no video calling abilities.
Alternatively, WhatsApp does much the
same, though sadly its optimised for
iPhone. For more features, Viber offers
similar functionality to Hangouts, with
messaging, video calling and low-rate
voice calls. Again, however, its iPhoneoptimised. Hangouts main competitor
comes from its biggest rival Microsoft
with Skype. On paper, theyre almost
identical, including voice and video
calling to Skype contacts, low-cost
regular calls and, of course, instant
messaging. The decision will inevitably
come down to whether most of your
friends are using Skype or Google+.

YOULL NEED
iPad, iOS 7, Mindly

Mind-mapping apps make

it easy to keep track of
ideas and projects. And
when it comes to mindmapping, you wont find a simpler or
more elegant solution than Mindly (Free).
It organises your thoughts into a series
of items, which can be a text item with
description and icon, photo or web link.
These items are organised into a multilevel hierarchical structure, with related
items orbiting the parent in a circle. You
rotate items around their parent using
your finger; an increasingly important
feature as the number of items grows
and Mindly adapts its display. We cant
emphasise how easy it is to use Mindly
follow our guide to learn everything you
need to know about bringing structure
to your next big idea. Nick Peers

Attach photos, web links and text items to your mind map with ease using Mindlys user-friendly tools.

HOW TO | CREATE A MIND MAP WITH MINDLY

1 First steps

Download Mindly from the App Store,

launch it and then opt whether to store your
documents online through your iCloud account
or locally on your iPad the former means you
can view and update your notes on other iOS
devices. Tap the + button to create a new
document. When prompted, type a title for your
first item, typically the idea itself. Then tap the
notepad icon to enter notes related to the item
in this case a detailed description of your idea.

30 |

2 Change item colour

Now tap the Color tab to choose a colour

for the item. Two basic schemes are provided:
Mindly Classics and Bright Colors. Tap a header
to switch between them, then tap a colour to
preview it. When youve found one you like, tap
the Define Child Theme button this allows you
to automatically colour subsequent items you
add based on the colour youve picked: choose
Varying to select this, or No Change selected if
you plan to colour each item individually.

3 Select an icon

Give your item another distinguishing

mark by adding an icon. Switch to the Icon tab
where youll find 15 categories of icon from
expressions (smileys) to signs and flags. Tap one
to browse its content, then scroll up and down
to see all available icons for that category if the
scroll isnt working, make sure you swipe up and
down on the right-hand edge of the icon-select
window. Once youve found one you like, select
it and tap the tick button.

4 Add new item

5 Photos and web links 6 Navigation aids

Repeat the process for all the other
sections you need (remember, you can always
add more at any time). You can also attach
images and hyperlinks to your structure: tap the
button in the top right corner and choose to
take a photo using your iPads camera, select an
image from your locally stored images or add a
web link. Once selected, the item appears in the
top right-hand corner tap and drag it to the
circle and choose Copy Here to add it.

Tap on an item to bring it into focus

you can now add related items that link to this
section in the usual way. Tapping one of these
items will subsequently take you deeper into
your mind map, allowing you to link items to
these sub-sections too. To go back up a level,
tap the items parent that should appear in the
top left corner of the screen, or tap the home
button to return to the main screen where
you can switch between different projects.

7 Manage items

8 View your map

9 Share your idea

With your title item in place, its time to

add the first related item to your structure. Think
about how you want to break things down
this first level should ideally be used to split
your idea into sections. Tap one of the + buttons
in the circle surrounding your item and create
your second item following the same process
as before note if youve chosen the Varying
option under Define Child Theme you can skip
the colour selection step.

Edit an item by double-tapping it; to

delete or move an item, tap and hold it youll
see two buttons in the right-hand corners of the
screen. Delete the item by dragging it to the
black button at the bottom and tapping Delete.
Drag it to the white button at the top and itll sit
inside the button. Navigate to the level of your
structure youd like to move it to, then drag it
back into position. You can also move items by
tapping and dragging them over other items.

Need an overview of your idea? Youll

see a row of buttons in the bottom left corner of
the screen the star-shaped button allows you
to view your idea as a full mind map: tap this
and all of your items will appear on-screen
connected together. You can zoom in and out
of the mindmap using the usual pinch gesture,
plus move around while retaining a better sense
of perspective. Tap on an item to jump to it in
the main view for further editing or building.

You can print your idea to any AirPrintenabled printer, or tap the Share button for a
number of options: email, opening as a separate
file or copying to the clipboard. The free version
restricts you to sharing your idea via email as a
Mindly document or PDF, or you can export it
in PDF format. Other options text, OPML and
HTML formats are restricted to the paid-for
version, which costs 4.99 / $6.99. Paid-for users
also gain an unlimited number of elements.

Illustrate your ideas

Visualise your thoughts using flowcharts and diagrams
SKILL LEVEL
Could be tricky

IT WILL TAKE

YOULL NEED
iPad, iOS 7, Grafio
or Grafio Lite

Getting your thoughts down can

be a tricky exercise. One of the
most effective ways of illustrating
your ideas is to use a flowchart or
diagram, helping you visualise all kinds of different
things, from simply bringing some order to
a chaotic set of lecture notes to building a
complete revision plan. Doing this on paper is a
hit-and-miss affair, but using Grafio on your iPad
is a much easier and more effective method.
Grafio costs 5.99 / $8.99, but you can
dip your toe in the water and trial the free
Grafio Lite app, which includes all the key
functionality for building your illustrations.
In this tutorial well show you how to use
all of its main tools, revealing how you can
quickly build up a striking visualisation without
having to possess any design skills thanks to its
library of objects. Ready to inject some order
into your study? Read on Nick Peers

You dont need to be a design whizz to use Grafio

it comes with lots of pre-designed objects.

HOW TO | MASTER GRAFIOS TOOLS

1 Add shapes & objects 2 Move, rotate and resize 3 Add text and sound
Open Grafio, tap + and choose Create
New. Start off by drawing a basic shape with
your finger and the shape-recognition tool will
automatically convert it. Alternatively, tap the
Library button (third from the left at the top of
the screen) to insert a shape from the hundreds
on offer, including flowchart symbols and
pictograms. Tap Photo Library to access your
own photos on your iPad, or User Library to
access shapes youve created.

34 |

Tap an object to select it. To move the

object, tap and drag it with one finger inside it.
To rotate the object, use two fingers inside the
object: one held in place, the other dragged in
the direction you wish to rotate it. There are
two ways to resize the object: manually by
tapping on it again to reveal drag handles, or
proportionally by placing two fingers inside
the object and then pinching out to make it
larger, or inwards to shrink it.

To add text to an object, simply doubletap inside it, then type your text. It will
automatically wrap to remain clearly attached
to the object. You can also add text as a freefloating object just double-tap on some free
space. To add a voice recording, select the
object, then tap the voice memo button to
record your audio. Tap again to finish. Once
done, tap the playback button to listen back, or
the X button next to the time index to delete it.

HOW TO | MASTER GRAFIOS TOOLS CONTINUED

4 Edit object

5 Set up connections

6 More options

7 Multiple selections

8 Finish diagram

9 Export and share

When you select an object, youll see

a range of options appear, allowing you to
duplicate or delete the object, add a voice
memo, change its appearance and an eye
dropper tool. Tap the settings button to change
its appearance, using the outline, fill and text
style buttons. Options include colour, shadow
and opacity. To use another objects style, tap
the eye dropper button, which will turn red,
then tap on the other object to grab its style.

To select multiple objects at once, tap

the select tool and then tap and drag over the
objects you want to edit as a group. Tap and
hold again to reveal the context menu where
youll find a new option Group that allows
you to group the objects so theyre treated as
a single object, perfect for resizing, moving
and rotating. Again, tap and hold to reveal
the context menu and an Ungroup option
if you want to re-edit individual objects.

To create a connection between one

object and another, switch to the pen tool and
draw a straight line from the first onto the
second, which automatically converts to a
straight line. Tap the connection to access
options to delete, add a voice memo, tweak its
settings and use the eye dropper. Tap settings to
change its type and pointer (including making it
double-ended), plus add a curve to the line. Tap
the connection again for manual adjustments.

Armed with these techniques you can

now build your diagram. As it grows in size and
scope, youll find yourself running out of room:
tap Preferences and choose Size, under Canvas,
to pick a larger drawing area (scroll down for
more options, such as iPad Retina). As your
canvas and diagram grows, tap and drag with
two fingers on an empty part of your canvas
to move around it, or use the pinch gesture to
zoom in and out without having to switch tools.

Tap and hold an object to access its

context menu, where youll find options for
copying and pasting, plus rearranging the
object by moving it above (To Front) or below
(To Back) other objects. Selecting Lock makes
the object non-editable, protecting it from
any further changes (select Unlock to make it
editable again). The final option Save stores
the selected object or objects in your own
personal User Library for reuse elsewhere.

Tap the menu button to return to the

main menu, then tap Untitled Document above
your documents name to rename it. When your
document is ready to be shared, printed or
exported, open it and tap the Share button in
the top right-hand corner to access available
options. These include email, saving to camera
roll, printing via AirPrint, video presentation
(which creates a video with each object shown
in order of creation), Box.net and Dropbox.

Master Adobe Lightroom

Perfect your photos using Adobes app for photographers
SKILL LEVEL
Anyone can do it

IT WILL TAKE

YOULL NEED
iPad, iOS 7, Creative
Cloud subscription,
Lightroom 5.4
or newer on your
desktop computer

The free Adobe Lightroom

app offers a small subset of the
desktop apps tools. You can
create Collections and manage
them on your iPad, but mainly you sync
Collections via Creative Cloud (subscription
required) from your computer; you can then
flag shots, opt to view only flagged shots, and
sort by name or date, but not use keywords or
stacks. It offers basic tone/colour edits, but no
selective or localised adjustments. However, it
does support Raw files via Smart Previews: any
edits you make are synced back and applied
to originals on your computer. This is certainly
superior to iPhotos approach of editing the
JPEG preview embedded in the Raw file.
So whos it for? Photographers on the road
could use the app to show clients shots on a
high-def screen, make basic tweaks, and pick
or reject shots on that basis. Alex Summersby

Use Adobe Lightroom for iPad to view specified Collections, make basic edits, and flag shots.

HOW TO | MANAGE AND EDIT PHOTOS WITH ADOBE LIGHTROOM

1 Sync Collections

Open Lightroom on your computer, click

top left and sign in. On the main Library screen,
find the Collections panel on the left-hand side.
Click the left-most icon next to each Collection
you want to sync with your iPad you can use
existing Collections or create new ones for the
purpose, but Smart Collections cant be synced.
Your original image files are not uploaded, just
Smart Previews, so your device wont be filled
up with huge, hard-to-handle Raw files.

36 |

2 Mobile app

On your iPad, open the Lightroom app

and sign in with your Adobe ID. The app will
sync with Creative Cloud (by default via Wi-Fi).
Once done, youll see the Collections you chose
to sync. Tap the arrow (bottom left) of a
collection for a slideshow; tap the three-dot
icon on one to add existing shots from your
Camera Roll or auto-import all shots you take
on the iPad from now on the originals will be
copied to CC and then into the desktop app too.

3 Manage Collections

Unreliable Wi-Fi? Tap Offline Editing to

download the Collection (Smart Previews only)
to your iPad. You cant do this with individual
shots, but you can move the shot or shots you
want into a new Collection for downloading: tap
the + sign (top right) to create one, then tap an
existing Collection to open it, tap and hold on
a shot, and Copy or Move it. You can of course
modify/rename Collections for any reason, and
theyll be synced back when youre connected.

Adobe Lightroom | TUTORIALS

HOW TO | MANAGE AND EDIT PHOTOS CONTINUED

4 View and edit

Tap a shot to view and edit it. You cant

stack shots in the mobile app or view them sideby-side to compare, but you can tap the first
icon in the group of four beneath a shot to see
the Collection as a filmstrip and tap this to swap
shots quickly. Double-tap or pinch in the usual
way to zoom. Tap with two fingers to display the
shots metadata, histogram or both. Tap the flag
at bottom left or swipe upwards on the image
to flag it or downwards to reject it.

5 Adjustments

Tap the second icon beneath the shot to

edit tone and colour. You can change white
balance, or choose Selector and drag the loupe
over what should be a colour-neutral spot, or
tweak Temperature and Tint manually. You can
also adjust Exposure and Contrast, Highlights,
Shadows and Whites, plus Clarity, Vibrance and
Saturation. Pick one and a slider appears: drag
this to adjust that value; drag with two fingers
for a clipping display of affected tones.

6 Presets

7 Undo

8 Crop

9 Sharing

Tap and hold with three fingers to see

the original image. All edits are non-destructive
and can be undone at any time, even if you close
and reopen the image. Double-tap on a slider
to reset it, or on a tile to reset edits under that
heading. Tap the icon (bottom right) to undo or
redo one step at a time, or tap Reset and choose
what to remove. Alternatively, if you hit upon a
formula you like, you can apply it to another
shot; open the new shot and tap Previous.

To crop the shot, tap the fourth of the

icons at the bottom, optionally tap one of the
tiles beneath the image to constrain the aspect
ratio, then drag a corner of the frame. Tap with
two fingers to toggle between various gridline
overlays. Drag the crop frame to move it around,
or drag outside it to rotate the image within it;
the frame may resize automatically to ensure
that the image fills it with no slivers of paper
showing. Double-tap the frame to reset.

Tap the next icon to apply 47 preset

filter-like effects. These include creative effects
such as toning and cross-processing, 11 styles
of mono conversion, plus vignettes and grain
effects. There are no lens correction or similar
options, no ways to localise effects, and no
sharpening as such, though the Detail tile does
enable you to boost Clarity and reduce noise.
Usefully, you can apply any mix of presets you
like (though they wont always blend well!).

Edits will be synced back to Lightroom

on your desktop computer, but you can also
share images direct from your iPad. Tap and
hold on an image when viewing a Collection
(see step 3) and select Share, or tap the Share
icon (top right) when viewing a Collection or
a single shot, and youll see the social network
options (Twitter for single shots only). Note that
if you opt to share via Mail, the image will be
resized to 2,048 pixels along its longest side.

How to calculate anything

Use WolframAlpha to perform calculations and plot probability
SKILL LEVEL

YOULL NEED
iPad, WolframAlpha,
internet connection

WolframAlpha (1.99 /
$2.99) is a computing
engine you can use to
answer mathematical
questions, calculate probabilities and
compare sets of data. To use it, you
simply type a few keywords. You dont
need an in-depth knowledge of
mathematical or statistical terms to get
WolframAlpha to produce useful results,
while definitions and calculations can
be shown in many cases.
The program works best when its
asked to calculate something or to show
information over time currency
fluctuations or the price of energy, etc.
Click the About tab at the bottom left of
the app to find tips on using it. Because
WolframAlpha only uses specific types of
information, you wont always find
answers to your questions. These are
based on answers that other people
have looked for. Rosie Hattersley

WolframAlpha uses known variables to calculate future events such as the next solar eclipse.

HOW TO | FIND MEANINGFUL INFORMATION

1 Simple searches

To use WolframAlpha for research, type

one or two keywords into the orange-framed
box at the top of the screen. Longer queries
are less effective. As soon as you start typing,
suggested results appear. Tap one if it matches
what you want, or just finish typing your query.
Information relating to your query appears
below it. Scroll down to see related info.

38 |

2 Use existing examples 3 Find out how its done

Use the examples given in the category
you want to search and then use a similar
format for your own query. There are dozens of
categories and sub-categories in the Examples
menu. Under the Mathematics, Calculus &
Analysis category you can see how a derivative
is calculated and, in the search box, the query
used. Change the 4 value to a 5, for example.

One real strength of WolframAlpha

is that many of its calculations include their
workings. This means you can learn how to
tackle the mathematical problem yourself and
understand how the solution was worked out.
Just tap Step-by-step Solution underneath a
result to prompt WolframAlpha to reveal how
it arrived at the answer step by step.

WolframAlpha | TUTORIALS

HOW TO | CALCULATE FUEL COSTS

1 Customise calculator 2 Measure the distance 3 Litres into gallons

Sometimes you need to refine your
search query so WolframAlpha can provide you
with the right answer. It doesnt understand
cost in money terms, but theres a fuel cost
calculator you can use to work out how
expensive it is to drive somewhere. Type fuel
cost calculator, then tap Change Input Values
and the distance you need to drive.

To work out distances between locations,

type the place names. WolframAlpha simply
plots a straight line between locations. You can
make the distance calculation a bit more
accurate by adding a via city x to the query, but
its best to use a more reliable mapping tool to
work out the mileage figure: Apple Maps told
us Bath to Glasgow is a 385-mile drive, not 314.

Change the 99p-per-gallon setting.

Wolfram Alpha provides a litres-to-gallons
conversion but you need to use the US gallons
figure. The 3.785 litres-per-gallon conversion
times the litre price gives a petrol price
approaching 5 per gallon. Type this into the
fuel cost calculator then tap Go to discover the
journey cost.

HOW TO | MEASURE YOUR EXERCISE REGIME

1 Exercising effectively? 2 Weights and measures 3 Compare exercise

To work out how many calories youll
burn on your cycle ride, use cycling calories as
your query. Some metabolic information about
energy used when cycling appears; above this is
a Change Input Values option. Tap this to bring
up a list where you can specify your weight,
gender, time spent exercising and how fast you
cycle (if known). Then tap Go.

Wolfram Alpha uses pounds for weights.

If you dont know how much you weigh in
pounds you can ask WolframAlpha to convert
your kilo weight to pounds in order to perform
the calorie-burning calculation. Type the figure
you need converting into the search query field
and add as lbs. Note the figure it provides, then
tap History at the bottom left to go back .

Tap Change Input Values, then type

in your weight and any other criteria you want
included in the calorie-burning calculation. If
you know your resting heart rate or want to
include your age and height, you can. Tap Go
to prompt WolframAlpha to work out how
effective your cycle ride is and how fast it
will get your heart pumping.

Unless your organisation is

very generous and has
given you a company
credit card, justifying how
much youve spent is a necessary chore.
Collating receipts and paperwork is a
pain thats why so many of us put off
our claim forms for weeks on end. This
doesnt really help businesses, as
expenses are often attributed to the
wrong month, or not logged properly.
Employees can also have problems
getting late claims signed off. Thats
where Concur comes in. Its an expenses
logging app, with capability for
managers to also sign off claims. It works
on a subscription model, so it could
prove too costly for some, but it could
prove invaluable for businesses with
enough employees. Dan Grabham

Expenses are often attributed to the wrong month, or not logged properly Concur is here to help!

HOW TO | LOGGING YOUR EXPENSES WITH CONCUR

1 Get your login

Concur is a free app, but the use of its

service is not free. Before you sign in you will
need a login. Go to Concur.com and subscribe
to the Small Business Edition of Concur Expense
for 6 per user per month. Other subscription
levels are available if your company processes
large numbers of expense claims, but this
subscription level is fine for most. Concur also
offers integrated travel and expenses solutions
should you need that extra level of tracking.

40 |

2 Getting your bearings 3 Your expenses list

Concur is a well designed app and its
easy to navigate on the left is access to your
expenses (the ability to log more is in the
shortcut, bottom right). Should you have a
receipt you want to log using your iPads
camera, snap it using the bottom left button.
Once youve got a batch of expenses together,
you can review and submit individual claims
from here. Finally, if youve got expenses to sign
off for others, you can approve these here.

Tap Expenses and youll see an empty

version of a list tap the + icon to add expense
entries. Should you have a lot of them, you can
sort them by order. As weve done here, you
can tap the Add To Claim button to bring up
checkboxes next to the individual items to
attribute them to a particular claim. The Edit
button enables you to select individual
expenses for deletion, should you add
something you decide you really cant claim for!

4 Add an expense

5 View your receipts

6 Viewing your claims

Lets add an extra expense using the +

button. As you can see, you can add various bits
of detail and information including venue,
vendor and date of the transaction. You can also
add your own comments, should you wish to,
which is handy if the expense is not a typical
one and needs more explanation. Adding more
information at this stage could mean your
expenses are signed off more easily, but it could
be as simple as keeping records for yourself.

From the expenses list, you can toggle

between your expenses and receipts using the
buttons at the top of the pop-up window.
Again you can tap the + button (top right of
the pop-up window) to log a new receipt in
Concur, as well as view any existing receipt
youve entered previously. Viewing a receipt will
bring up a full resolution of the receipt itself (see
step 2 about taking an image of your receipt
with your iPad camera).

7 Enter a claim

8 Approve other claims 9 Take a test drive

Essentially these claims enable you to

gather your receipts and expenses once youve
entered them into Concur theyre then shown
on the right. You can tap the Claim Summary
button on the left to see an overview of the
claim and also leave a comment for the person
that will approve your expenses should it be
necessary. Finally, you can submit the claim
(button far right, not shown above); it will
then go for approval and processing.

Should you have the authority to do

so, you can view other peoples expense claims,
shown here in list format. Youll be shown whose
expenses they are and for what purpose;
whether theyre a general monthly claim or a
specific trip to a location or a particular client
visit. You can then tap each claim to load it
yourself and, much like you did to submit your
own claim, you can approve the claim using
the button in the bottom right of the screen.

Tapping your claims enables you to view

a list of unsubmitted (and submitted) claims;
you can tap the + to add a claim. Each claim has
a title, so you can call it something specific to
help with your record keeping and the claims
approval say youve been to a tradeshow, then
putting the shows name with the claim will
identify to your manager or other approver
what the claim is for. Tapping one of the claims
shows the screen you can see in the next step.

And thats it for our guide to Concur.

Should you want to have a go without wanting
to commit, the app does offer a subscriptionfree test drive version complete with fake
expenses and sample reports. We should point
out, however, that you cant process any real
expenses using this mode and its of no practical
use its purpose is to give you a sense of the
look and feel of the app so you can decide
whether you want to subscribe.

Stache | TUTORIALS

Smarter web bookmarking

Use Stache to save visual, searchable bookmarks
SKILL LEVEL
Anyone can do it

IT WILL TAKE
20 minutes

YOULL NEED
iPad, iOS 7, Stache,
Stache app for
Mac optional

The web is about the

visual as much as the
verbal, so why stick
with Safaris plain text
list of bookmarks? Stache (99p /
$1.99) displays bookmarks visually,
with a screenshot for each, making
it easy to identify sites at a glance.
Stache isnt perfect: the tiny grey
site addresses can be hard to make
out, and you cant alter the order in
which bookmarks are displayed.
However, you can edit their titles
and descriptions; add tags to one or
several at a time, then display just
those with a given tag; or group
them into collections and organise
these within folders. A matching
Mac app (3.99 / $5.99) can import
or export bookmarks as an HTML
file and sync with the iOS app via
iCloud. (It can also archive pages,
but these wont sync.) On the Mac,

you can add bookmarks to Stache

with one click in Safari, but its more
fiddly in iOS see below.
The iOS app has a powerful,
speedy search function: tap the
search bar at the top to search the
content, titles and descriptions of all
your bookmarked pages and any
tags. It will find pages containing all
the words you enter, or the exact
phrase if you enter it within double
quotation marks. The superb search
function alone makes Stache worth
using! Alex Summersby

Stache displays
bookmarks visually,
making them easy
to identify, and can
even search them

HOW TO | INTEGRATE STACHE WITH SAFARI IN iOS

1 Set up

iOS doesnt allow third-party apps to

integrate with Safari, so you first need to set
things up. Open Stache, tap the menu icon (top
left), then Settings > Add Bookmarklet. Staches
site will open in Safari. Follow the step-by-step
guide on the page to create a Bookmark and
then edit it to turn it into a script. It takes four
simple steps, and you have to do it only once.

2 Bookmark

Now when you visit a page in Safari and

want to bookmark it, tap Safaris Bookmark icon
(not the Share icon), tap Favourites, then Add to
Stache. The page will open in Stache. Now tap
the Stache icon at the foot of the page. You can
also add a new bookmark within Stache by
tapping the + sign (top right), entering a URL,
then tapping the Stache icon on the page.

A tick appears in the middle of the page

to verify that its saved. Tap the left-pointing
arrow (top left) to view your Stache bookmarks.
Tapping one opens the page in the Stache
browser; you can then tap the Share icon
(bottom right) to open it in Safari (or Chrome if
thats set as your browser), add it to your Safari
Reading List, or share the URL.

TUTORIALS | Blogsy

Publish blogs with Blogsy

Easily manage multiple types of blog from an iPad
SKILL LEVEL
Taking things further

IT WILL TAKE

YOULL NEED
iPad, Blogsy,
WordPress site

Blogsy (2.99 / $4.99 ) is a

blog writing app that you
can use to write, format
and post articles to one or
several blogs at once. Unlike word
processing documents and apps,
Blogsys interface is specifically geared
towards blogging. It even turns your
iPad keyboard into one with HTML tags.
Blogsy has rich text, HTML and textbased formatting tools and a preview
button to check posts before publishing.
If you have several blogs even on
different blog-publishing platforms

Blogsy is specifically geared towards

blogging. It even turns your iPad
keyboard into one with HTML tags

you can create a post and publish it with

ease. Blogsy works with WordPress,
Blogger, Tumblr, Movable Type, Joomla,
Drupal and Squarespace. As well as
publishing posts to any of these, you
can upload photos to Facebook, Flickr
and Instagram. Blogsy takes a drag-anddrop approach to adding photos, videos
and links. Just drag them across from the
built-in browser. If youve ever used
WordPress, youll know that adding
visual content involves uploading it to a
media library first and then linking to it
in your post. Blogsy lets you add content
to your site with a flick of your finger
just tap and hold your finger on a photo
and then drag it to a special envelope
where it's uploaded to the relevant blog.
You can do this for photos you find
online too. Rosie Hattersley

HOW TO | SET UP AND EDIT A WORDPRESS BLOG

1 Set up a blog

Blogsy isnt a blogging platform in its own

right, so youll need to sign up for a free account
at one of the blogging sites like Wordpress,
Tumblr or Blogger. Tumblr is the simplest of the
three and is good for short posts with photos,
though you can also create photo-based blogs
on the other blogging platforms. Blogger is
handy if you already use other Google services.
Wordpress has the most designs and more
advanced tools.

44 |

2 Create your first post 3 Format your blog post

Blogsy opens to a blank page with
formatting tools at the top and icons for familiar
social media sites such as Flickr and YouTube on
the right. To start your blog post, first overwrite
the word Untitled in the title bar at the top. As
soon as you tap in the title bar, the iPads
keyboard will appear. The blog title will become
part of the web address for your post. Use a
straightforward title because it means search
engines are more likely to find your posts.

Write your blog post in exactly the same

way you would on your regular blogging
platform. Start by typing what you want to say
and then add formatting afterwards. Tap and
select words to format, then apply bold or
underlining from the top menu. If you highlight
a word in a paragraph or just have your cursor
there when you change the Text Format option,
the whole paragraph will change. To undo any
changes, tap the back arrow at the top left.

Blogsy | TUTORIALS
HOW TO | SET UP AND EDIT A WORDPRESS BLOG CONTINUED

4 Save multiple versions 5 Add links to your blog 6 Add photos to posts
Blogsy will autosave your work as you go,
but you should also periodically tap the floppy
disk icon to manually save your post. This saves a
new version of your post. You can see all the
locally saved versions of your drafts by tapping
the + sign on the right of the title bar. Should
you want to revert a major change or use a
different version of the same post on a different
blog platform you can. Just tap the version of
your blog you want to use.

To add links to a post go to a web page,

copy the web address then highlight the link
text in your blog by dragging over it. Tap Link
and paste your URL into the Link URL box. Blogsy
simplifies this with its own browser link (the
compass at the top of the menu on the right).
Navigate to the web address you want then tap
the button to the left of the address field to copy
the link. You can change the browser home page
in the Settings > General > Home Button menu.

7 Assign posts to a blog 8 Tag and publish

Once youve finished writing your blog,
youll want to publish it. If youve already got the
relevant app on your iPad, just tap its icon on the
right of the Blogsy screen and tap OK to allow
Blogsy to use it. If you arent already signed into
to the service you want to use, type your
username and password and Log In. Its easier to
go to Settings > Service Settings then select
services to sign in to if you want to publish to
multiple accounts.

To publish, tap the cog icon and select

the blog it is to be posted to. If you dont want
the post to be published immediately, tap
Publish Date and use the scroll wheels on the
calendar to set the time and date, then tap
Publish > Done. Tap Labels to tag your post.
Blogsy has access to your existing blog, so it can
show you the tags youve used before. This is
handy if you use a tag cloud or display tags for
visitors to use as a search mechanism.

Tap the flower icon to starting adding

photos to your blogs. Blogsy will request access
to your iPad photo library. Tap OK. Youll now see
thumbnails of your albums, Camera Roll and
Photostream. Drag your photo to where you
want it to appear in your post. If necessary, use
the rotate options to make sure its the right way
up. Double-tap the image to open its settings
menu. Set its position on the page and its size.
Use Lock Proportion before resizing.

9 Send iPad images

You can add individual iPad photos to

Blogsy posts or you can add them to a central
library from where you can add them to your
posts, even if you arent blogging from your iPad.
Tap the flower photo icon then the word Direct.
The word Direct is then replaced by Envelope.
An Envelope for each blog account youve added
to Blogsy appears. Drag photos into the
Envelope and tap Upload. These photos also
now appear on the right of the main screen.

TUTORIALS | IFTTT

Supercharge your apps

IFTTT combines your favourite apps into recipes
SKILL LEVEL
Taking things further

IT WILL TAKE

YOULL NEED
iPad, iOS 7,
IFTTT

The iPad has some

pretty powerful core
apps at its disposal,
such as Facebook,
Evernote and Instagram. Chances
are you use at least one of these
bread-and-butter apps on a daily
basis, but maybe you also use a few
more. Wouldnt it be great if you
could somehow connect these
apps together and make them
even more useful?
Thats the kind of premise behind
IFTTT (If This Then That), a free app
that combines other apps to create
useful functions or a recipe, as its
known. For example, you can set
IFTTT so that when you post a
picture to Facebook, it automatically
files that image to a designated
place on your Dropbox account.
The If This part denotes the trigger,
which in this case would be adding

the photo to Facebook, and the

Then That part denotes the action,
which is filing it to Dropbox.
These triggers and actions can
be anything you like, so instead of
adding photos to Facebook, it could
be anything you photograph using
Instagram. Likewise, Dropbox could
be changed so that instead you
email them to somebody. You
can create your own customised
recipes, or you can choose from
the many pre-sets. Nick Odantzis

Wouldnt it
be great if you
could somehow
connect your apps
to each other?

HOW TO | CREATE A POWERFUL IFTTT RECIPE IN MINUTES

1 Easy option

When you first open the IFTTT app, youll

see a variety of recipes that have already been
created for you. There are featured recipes at the
top, such as those specific to gardening, or there
are more generic ones underneath. Just tap on
one to open it and tap Use Recipe to activate it.
Some apps require that you enter specific
information before activating.

46 |

2 Tailor made

To create your own customised recipe

from the available actions and triggers in IFTTT,
tap the Browse switch in the top right corner.
This takes you to your saved recipes list, if you
have any, which displays the recipes on the
right-hand side and what each one does on the
left-hand side. Tap the + button in the top right
corner to start crafting your new recipe.

3 Crafting apps

To add a trigger, tap the + button and

tap the app that you would like to trigger, such
as eBay. Choose the trigger from the window
that appears beneath (in this case, searching)
and tap + next to it. Tap Continue, enter any info
necessary for the app to work. Then tap the red
+ button to choose the action, once again
choosing an app and an action to go with it.

RoomScan, enter a name for the room,
then hold your device against the first wall
until it beeps. Now just move steadily
around the room and touch the device
against each wall in turn, pausing for the
beep each time to confirm its recorded.
To finish, come full circle to the wall you
started with, plus the next one this
overlap is needed to close the loop.

RoomScan will then generate a floorplan.

It works like magic, although in our tests
it struggled with odd-shaped rooms (ones
with angled or curved walls and lots of
alcoves). The free version is limited to four
rooms; the Pro version (2.99 / $4.99) has
no such limit, and can even tell where
each new room should join onto rooms
youve previously mapped, building up a
plan of the whole property. You can finetune plans after theyre generated, mark
the positions of doors and windows, and
use custom colours. Alex Summersby

iPad, perhaps simply because the
position of a smaller device can
be plotted more precisely), but
you can correct any: just tap on a

accordingly. Measurements youve

one before. Repeatedly.
Maddeningly, HarmonyWiz

achievement in itself; music may
well be applied maths, but the
maths involved isnt easy.
Ditch the hit-and-miss painting
aspect and it becomes more than
just a clever music toy for novices.
Engage Expert mode and you get a
really useful compositional tool that
enables you to record your melody
using an on-screen or MIDI
keyboard and edit notes onto the
musical stave before adding the
automatic harmonies. You can then

change the attributes of every

chord, or just go in and edit the
individual notes if you prefer; heres
where some musical knowledge
helps. Finally you can feed your
masterpiece into another app
through AudioBus, or export it as
audio, MIDI or even as sheet music
using LilyPond.
With limited instrumentation but
good quality instrument packs for
69p / 99 a shot and no mixing or

Password management apps arent

exactly thin on the ground, so
Passible would need to offer
something truly spectacular to
stand out from the crowd. Sadly, it doesnt. Fire it
up and set a passcode, and youre good to go,
manually inputting all your existing logins and
then allowing the app to suggest improvements.
Your passwords and other sensitive information
are secured using AES 256-bit encryption, but this
is no better than that offered by rival services such
as LastPass and Dashlane. The built-in web

browser can pull existing logins from your

account, but it cant then offer to save sites you
log into manually, and nor does it have a
password generator tool when creating new
passwords during registration. You can forget
about importing passwords from other services
too. The end result is a password manager that
offers only the very basics. Nick Peers

with one major gripe: unlike the website you dont
get to change your vantage point, meaning youre
stuck with a single point to look from. Luckily, you

effects can look naff if youre not prepared to take
the time to fine-tune. There are four categories of
object that you can place in your image, although
their descriptions are fairly useless.
Choose an object, pinch to zoom and use one

subtly, although the difference between Hard and

change based on your movements and you can

Together Mobile
Keep all your cuttings in one place
+++++
6.99 / $9.99 Developer Steve Harris Works with Universal Version 1.0.2 Age 17+

Storing all kinds of links, shortcuts

and other content in a single
location has been easy on your Mac
for years but on iOS, Apple only
really provides the Notes app. Together Mobile is a
repository for links, notes, bookmarks, pictures and
even movies and supports rich as well as plain
text. You can create multiple libraries of stuff; tag,
label, sort and manage lists with ease; and
everything can be synced via iCloud to your other
iOS devices or your Mac, with an extra app (which
you have to buy separately).

Its slick and elegant and works well, though

you have to enter all the information manually
inside the app. When iOS 8 introduces app
extensions, you should be able to save content
from other apps directly into Together, which will
make it massively more convenient. As it is, this is
a good way to store and sort content for power
users who take lots of cuttings. Hollin Jones

Hexiled
Have you got the lexicon to get hexagone?
+++++
Free (1.49 / $1.99 IAP) Developer Triplezero Works with Universal Version 1.0.1 Age 4+

In a minimal universe of hexagons,

you drag out words to move about
a grid. In the free mode, called
Escape, you tunnel from the centre
to an edge. Its clever: the games initially a cinch,
but each success cuts the time limit next time
round. Combined with tiles requiring minimumlength words, youll often find yourself in a frantic
race to the finish, especially when paths lead to
cul-de-sacs of useless letters. On game over, you
get to pore over stats and word definitions
a nice touch.

1.49 / $1.99 (or playing an awful lot of Escape)

The first Civ Rev game was basically

discover the world, build cities, become the
dominant people, by peaceful means or not but
with less micromanaging, making for more
approachable and faster games.
The same is true of this sequel. Its almost
identical, but with 3D graphics. There are leaders
to be (or oppose), new research and (some) new
units to command, but little has changed deep

down. In some ways, this is great it retains the

originals feeling of strategy without spending
hours poring over stats but its a shame not to
have a sequel develop the formula meaningfully. If
youve already played Civ Rev, the new stuff here

+++++
Free Developer Oz Machine Works with Universal Version 1.1.0 Age 4+

Unfortunately for Puzzix, first

impressions dont count for
everything. Initially, this seems like a
really nice take on block-falling
puzzlers. Complex shapes sit in the well, while a
stream of silhouettes scrolls behind them. When
you spot a shape that will successfully connect
with a block below, you tap to make it solid.
Connect three shapes and they disappear; four
or more provide bombs to explode especially
stubborn blocks. The problem is Puzzix never
builds on its interesting premise. Youll eventually

have five columns to deal with, but the games

sedate nature means its never a challenge, and
even if you do fail (through stacking blocks above
the line of doom), you can just replay the level
with your score intact. If youre after some kind of
chill-out block puzzler, we suppose Puzzix would
fit the bill; otherwise, youd best look elsewhere.

Symphony in A to Z
+++++
1.49 / $1.99 Developer Rad Dragon Works with Universal Version 1.0.1 Age 4+

Alphabeats mixes music and words

in a clever arcade package with a
touch of Tetris. Letters drop from
the top of the screen to the beat of
different electronic music tracks, and you move a
slider around at the bottom to catch the ones you
need to spell out a word.
Longer words mean more points, but as you
collect the letters, they build up at the bottom of
the screen, making it harder to avoid the letters
you dont want. If the wrong one hits, you lose
your word. Its a nice risk/reward feeling, and
makes for great high-score runs.

The problem is the game is imprecise to

control. Its easy to miss the letters you want, and
we were constantly accidentally triggering the
upward swipe gesture to complete words before
we were ready.
The other gestures for using power-ups work
better. Ultimately, though, it all makes for a game
thats good fun, but frustrates when you go
beyond the most casual settings. Matt Bolton

A fun high-score spell-fest to the

beat, but loose controls mean its
not quite a number one hit.

Startup, stability, performance

How do I restart my iPad?
First, tap and hold the sleep/wake button for around five
seconds until a slider appears inviting you to power it off. Flick
this to do so. Once your iPad has powered down, press and
hold the sleep/wake button again until the familiar Apple logo
appears on screen.
If your iPad has frozen, or refuses to respond to the reset
mechanism, hold the sleep/wake button together with the
Home button on the front of your iPad and wait around 10
seconds this should force a complete reset.

Why is my iPad running much more

sluggishly than it does normally?
This can usually be traced to a single app behaving badly. Try
closing it by first double-tapping the home button quickly to
bring up a list of running apps. If you have an idea about
which app is responsible, locate and close it; if not, try closing
the first four apps in the list, then see if performance improves.
If it doesnt, keep closing apps in batches. Should things
improve, youve narrowed the problem down to one of those
apps check online to see if theyre already known for
slowing performance.
If closing all your apps has no effect, try restarting your iPad,
which should clear its memory and allow you to start from
scratch. Keep an eye out for performance problems in the
future to help target the app or apps responsible.
Also keep an eye on how much free space you have if
youre running low, this can affect performance too. See the
section on freeing up space for more tips.

What kind of apps can potentially slow

down my iPads performance?
Essentially, its the apps that work in the background even
when theyre not in focus email, GPS trackers, music players,

Sluggish performance could

be down to a rogue app
close apps individually to find
out which one is responsible.

Skype calls and other VoIP apps, for instance. Other types of
app unless theyre buggy should have no effect on
performance when not being used. Also consider disabling
parts of the Spotlight search tool. This consumes resources in
the background while its indexing all of your content, so visit
Settings > General > Spotlight Search to deselect services.

How do I stop an app from crashing?

If the crashing is random behaviour, its likely a bug that will
need fixing visit the developers website. If the app simply
crashes whenever you try to open it, first try rebooting your
iPad. If that doesnt fix the problem, delete and reinstall the
app from the App Store.

Power and battery issues

Why does my battery drain even when
the iPad is in standby?
The simplest way to prevent excessive battery drain is to flick
Airplane mode on this takes your iPad offline, so its using
the minimum amount of battery possible. If you prefer to
leave your iPad connected to the internet, another way to
save on battery is to tweak your email account settings.
Mail can be checked one of three ways: manually, whenever
you open your mail app; using push, where the server notifies
your iPad as soon as new mail arrives; and via fetch, where
your iPad checks the mail server at set intervals (15, 30 or 60
minutes) for new mail.
Push is technically a more efficient way of receiving mail as
your mail server does most of the hard work, but your iPads
battery drains quicker because it has to permanently maintain
an internet connection to listen out for notifications. If you
dont need real-time notification of new mail arriving in your
account, open Settings and choose Mail, Contacts, Calendars
> Fetch New Data.
First flick the Push switch off, then tap any accounts that are
currently set to Push and change them to Fetch or Manual.
Finally, change the Fetch schedule to 30 minutes or an hour if
you can wait that long you can always manually check by
launching your mail app. If you dont need any kind of
notification, choose Manual for the maximum power saving.

How can I make my battery last longer

between charges?
Other ways to preserve battery life include dimming your
screen. Tap Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness. Leave AutoBrightness enabled, but try reducing the slider to a level thats
dimmer, but still comfortable the auto-brightness tool will
adapt accordingly. Next, check your wireless settings and
switch off any technologies youre not using specifically
Bluetooth, but also 3G/4G if you dont need it. Dont use

Reduce the brightness level to dim your iPads screen and reduce its power demands.

Choose Fetch for email

instead of Push to help
improve battery life.

Location Services? Switch those off too. Dont worry about

iTunes Wi-Fi Sync as that only occurs automatically when your
iPad is plugged into the mains.
If you listen to music on your iPad, switch off the Music
apps graphics equaliser, which makes great demands on the
battery. If youre using another music app, it too might make
similar demands. Finally, check your Auto-Lock settings under
Settings > General. Reducing this to the minimum two
minutes will also help preserve battery.

How can I extend the lifespan of my

iPads battery?
No matter how you treat it, your iPads battery wont last
forever, and has a finite number of charge/discharge cycles
before its original capacity falls below 80 per cent. Obviously
following the tips above to extend your batterys life between
charges will help enormously, but there are other things you
can do too.
First, to allow your iPad to accurately measure your batterys
charge, try to charge it fully and then run it completely down
once a month. Dont be tempted to do this all the time,
though, as youll reduce the total number of times it can be
recharged, because of the way the battery is made. In a similar
vein, dont leave your iPad on permanent charge (when at
home, say), as this is also not ideal for the batterys life.
Avoid leaving your iPad in a hot place when its not
required, such as in the sun or in the boot of your car. Doing
so will degrade the battery further. Heat also affects its
charging capacity, so try to charge it somewhere thats below
30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).
If you plan to leave your iPad unused for a period of time,
Apple recommends its stored in a similarly cool, moisture-free
environment. Charge the battery to a maximum of 50 per
cent, then power it down completely. Be prepared to have to
recharge it for up to 20 minutes if you leave it in storage for a
long time.

Connection issues
I cant connect to my Wi-Fi network
First check youre in range of your Wi-Fi router, then try
toggling AirPlane mode off and on again in settings to see if it
picks up the connection. If this fails, check other devices on
your network you may find the issue is with your router or
internet connection, in which case try switching off the router
for 10 seconds, then switch it back on again. If youre still
stuck, open Safari and type in your routers IP address (typically
192.168.x.1, where x is generally 0 or 1 although it can go
up to 255) to access its status and configuration utility.
If, after all these checks, youre still unable to connect to
your home network which is otherwise functioning okay, go
to Settings > Wi-Fi. Tap the i button next to your Wi-Fi
connection and select Forget this Network, then create a
brand new connection.

I cant access my 3G/4G connection

As with Wi-Fi issues, the first thing to do is make sure youre in
range of your data network. If indoors, you may have to move
to a window or even go outside to connect successfully if
you can, check your providers coverage (over Wi-Fi) to see if
your current location is covered, plus check to see if there are
any known issues.
If network coverage isnt an issue, first go to Settings >
Cellular Data and flick the switch off and on again. If this
doesnt work, try rebooting your iPad. Still no luck? Go to
Settings > General > About and verify your network is
correctly identified you might even be prompted to install
an update at this point, in which case do so.
If this doesnt work, try switching off the SIM PIN function
under Settings > Cellular Data if its currently enabled. If youve
just been on Wi-Fi, open Settings > Location Services >
System Settings and check Cell Network Search is enabled it
shouldnt make any difference in theory, but some people
have reported that switching it back on and then rebooting

their iPad fixes the problem. Its certainly worth a try anyway
and is a quick thing to do.
If none of these steps work, one last thing to try is Settings
> General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Youll lose all your
network settings, but clearing them may be the solution you
need short of restoring your iPad entirely to its default
factory state. This final measure should be just the thing to
sort it out, unless theres something really wrong with your
broadband or Wi-Fi router.

Im having trouble connecting a device

to my iPad via Bluetooth
First bring your iPad and Bluetooth device within about 10
metres of each other closer if possible. Tap Settings >
Bluetooth and check the device is in the list; if its listed as Not
Connected, tap it to manually attempt the connection. If this
fails, flick the Bluetooth switch off and on again.
Next, turn your attention to your Bluetooth accessory. Is it
fully charged or connected to power and switched on? If so,
consult its instructions to find out how to set it to pairing
mode. If youre still having problems, restart the device. If this
doesnt work, try restarting your iPad.
Still no luck? Return to Settings > Bluetooth, tap i next to
the device and choose Forget this Device. Start the pairing
process from scratch. If youre stumped for the Bluetooth PIN,
check your device or try common passcodes like 0000, 1111
and 1234. If you still have problems, visit the Bluetooth
devices website for more troubleshooting advice, including a
possible firmware upgrade.

To fix a Wi-Fi problem first go to

the switch off and on again. Then
reboot your iPad if you need to.

iCloud wont sync properly with my iPad

Why doesnt my Windows PC

recognise my iPad in iTunes?
If your iPad doesnt appear at all in iTunes, appears with an
exclamation mark, or cant be restored, start by making sure
iTunes is up to date. Next, check the USB cable isnt damaged
or has stopped working try another cable or check the
plugs, as well as your iPads Lightning or 30-pin socket.
Remember some third-party cables may only work as
charging devices. Next, verify Apple Mobile Device Support is
installed under Programs and Features. If its missing, youll
need to uninstall iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update
and Apple Application Support in that order, then download
and install the latest version of iTunes.
If you see an error about the Apple Mobile Device Service
not running, press [Win] + [R], type services.msc and hit
[Enter]. Local the Apple Mobile Device service and click Stop
the service, then click Start the service. Once done, verify its
Startup type is set to Automatic (if its not, double-click its
entry to make it so before clicking OK), then try connecting
your iPad again. If this fails, remove Apple Mobile Device
Support followed by all other Apple software and then
reinstall iTunes again.
Other possible causes of this problem can be third-party
phone software try removing any such programs, then try
connecting again. Be prepared to uninstall and reinstall iTunes
and all Apple software after doing so if problems persist,
because inevitably this software isnt as reliable in its Windows
version as it is on a Mac.

First try to delete old/

unwanted iPad backups
through iTunes itself.

Check your iCloud settings to

make sure everything you
want to be synchronised is
actually selected.

Patience is key here things dont happen instantaneously

because of the speed of your network connections. However,
if nothing ever appears to sync, first go to Settings > iCloud
and verify whats currently set to sync. Also check that your
Apple ID is the same across all your devices, this can be a
problem if your iPad is on another account such as a kids
account youvr set up for them.
If these all check out, verify sharing is enabled on your iPad
(Settings > iCloud), Mac (System Preferences > iCloud, and
Accounts > Account Information in Calendar) and PC (iCloud
Control Panel). If necessary, delete your account information
on these and try entering them anew.
If you come across duplicated data which is mainly an
issue with Calendars and Contacts in OS X 10.8.5 or earlier
make sure you disable sharing in iTunes. To do this, connect
your iPad, select its name and click Info, then untick
everything in the list.
iCloud is far from perfect, but remember you can backup
manually to your computer if you dont trust its working.

How do I delete old, corrupt backups

from my computer?
First, try deleting backups from within iTunes itself open the

Password/passcode issues
Can I reset my iPads passcode if Ive
forgotten what it is?
You may be able to using iTunes and this may also work if
your iPad has been disabled after you (or someone else) has
entered the wrong passcode too many times. Youll need to
connect your iPad to iTunes, then hope it doesnt ask you to
enter the passcode on your computer. If it doesnt, sync your
device with iTunes, then back it up. Once finished, restore your
device. When prompted by the iOS Setup Assistant, choose
the Restore from iTunes backup option, then select the most
recent backup.
If this doesnt work, try recovery mode: disconnect your
iPad from its USB cable, then switch it off. When you power it
back up, reconnect the USB cable as you press and hold the
Home button. Keep the button held until you see the Connect
to iTunes screen appear from here iTunes should alert you to
the fact its detected your iPad in recovery mode. Click OK,
then restore it by following the prompts.

Try restoring your iPad should it be disabled due to passcode issues.

Problems with apps

Why wont my app appear on my iPad
after Ive downloaded it via iTunes?

Search for the App Store if

you cant find its icon
anywhere on your iPad.

First verify youre running the latest version of iOS and if its
iOS 7, that its supported by the app in question. If you see any
errors appear, or blank icons after syncing, it may indicate a
lack of available space on your iPad (see the next section)
this is particularly a problem for compressed apps that expand
to more than twice their size after being downloaded.

If all else fails, ditch iTunes and attempt to install the app
directly onto your iPad via its own Wi-Fi connection.

Wheres the App Store gone?

Usually this problem occurs when youve accidentally
bumped the App Store icon to the void, a mysterious place
beyond the final page of apps. To check its still on your iPad
(which it has to be), swipe down from the centre of your
home screen to use the Spotlight search type app store and
it should appear. You can then make a note of where it is and
move it somewhere more accessible.
If this yields no results, open Settings > Restrictions and
check Installing Apps hasnt been switched off. Other
problems may be linked to a broken sync: try resetting your
iPad by holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until it
restarts, then sync again from iTunes. If this fails, restore from
your last good backup.

Remove ghost apps from your iPad

Ghost apps appear greyed out, but tapping them does
nothing. Theyre linked to sync problems, particularly those
instigated over a Wi-Fi connection. Try tapping and holding to
see if youre able to delete the app when they all start jiggling,
but if this fails, youll need to connect your iPad to your
computer via iTunes, then go to its Apps tab, select the home
screen containing the ghost app, delete it and then click
Apply. You might also need to reset your iPad at this point.
if youre syncing over iCloud or Wi-Fi and you see lots of
dimmed apps with progress wheels whirring, this indicates
the apps are being synced or updated, so it pays to be patient.

Free up space
Check your iPads usage stats
to see which apps are
gobbling up the most space.

My iPads running out of space. How can

I free some more space up?
Start by tapping Settings > General > Usage. Wait while your
iPad scans your installed apps and then go through the list,
removing those you no longer need. Also pay close attention
to apps you want to keep, but which appear to be taking up
large amounts of space tap one and make a note of the
Documents & Data size. If this is large, explore the apps
settings for ways of clearing its cache, or simply delete it and
reinstall it from the App Store.
Where will you find app settings? Either within the app
itself, or via Settings simply scroll down and look for your
app in the list. In the case of Safari, tap Settings > Safari, then
choose Clear Cookies and Data to empty the cache
periodically and recover lost space. Also consider opening
Messages and removing redundant conversations, which can
take up large chunks of space.
If space is still at a premium, connect your iPad to iTunes
and take a look at the bar chart at the bottom of the window
you may find that Other is still taking up an unacceptably
large amount of space. One thing to try is backing up and
then restoring your iPad this sometimes removes redundant
files to free up more space.

Any tips for keeping media at a

manageable level?
One of the biggest space hogs on your iPad will be photos,
music and video. You can, of course, periodically clear these
out, but a better option particularly with music and video
is to think of alternative ways of accessing them on your iPad. ,
Consider using iTunes on your PC or Mac as a server, letting
you stream music and video direct to your iPad.

Calendar and Reminders

How do I fix problems with the
Calendar and Reminders apps?
Assuming your iPad is online and able to
connect, first open a secure website
(https://appleid.apple.com) to check the
required ports (80 and 443) are accessible.
Now open the Calendar app and try
manually refreshing your calendars and
reminders tap Calendars at the bottom of
the screen to open the Calendars list
window and pull down to force a refresh.
If this fails, try closing the troublesome
app by tapping the Home button twice,
locating the preview screen for the app in
question and then closing it. Wait at least a
minute before reopening the app.

How do I remove unwanted

duplicate calendars?
First, verify the issue isnt with iCloud
calendars by logging on to iCloud Calendar
(icloud.com/calendar) if it is, youll need
to contact iCloud support (http://www.
apple.com/support/icloud/contact). If the
problem is limited to your iPad, first try
refreshing the Calendar list. Next, if youre
using both iTunes and iCloud to sync your
calendars, you may need to hide or delete
the duplicate calendars on your computers

you can sync directly with your Yahoo!
calendar, so delete the CalDAV account to
avoid possible duplication.

What steps can I take to

troubleshoot problems syncing
calendars and reminders from
iCloud to my iPad?
First check there isnt a known system issue
by visiting the Apple System Status page

Next, verify your time and date settings are
correct by tapping System > General > Date
& Time if necessary, turn on Set
Automatically. Finally, check Settings >
iCloud to verify both Calendars and
Reminders are switched on. Consider
switching off the Calendar choose Keep
Data unless your data is backed up
elsewhere and then switching it back on
again. Also check Settings > Reminders; try
tapping Sync to verify the current sync
settings; try a different setting, then wait a
few minutes before refreshing again (see
first question).
Note: when looking for updates to
birthdays, remember that if you update
these via the Contacts app, you may have
to wait up to an hour before the changes
are pushed to all your devices.

Why arent my events appearing

on iCloud.com?
If youve saved an event in your calendar,
open it and verify its been saved to your
iCloud calendar to push it to other devices
if necessary, make this the default
calendar under Settings > Mail, Contacts,
Calendars > Default Calendar.
