Five Key
Considerations
from Apple

Overview
-Numberkiz is a learning, teaching, recording, and sharing tool for math.

-Support a full range of tools for teaching math concepts such as: algebra,
numeration, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions,
operations, decimals, area, perimeter, shapes, measurement, ratios,
proportions, etc.

Engagement
-This app is very engaging because it is user friendly across various audiences
-Students can listen to a previous recording, create a problem on their own,
record and replay their own voice recordings, or solve class problems
-From experience, we know how much the kids love iPads and computers, so
the technology aspect makes math a little bit more fun for the students
-Since the app has tools to use with a variety of math concepts, it is
something the kids can return to and become familiar with

Developmental Appropriateness
-Both students and teachers can use Numberkiz effectively:
-Teachers can help students with homework by working through an example
problem, upload their own lessons on the app so students can watch them
before or after class, tutor a student from afar, showcase their lessons by
sharing their knowledge with the world
-Students can use the app if they need to see a problem re-worked, if they
miss class, when they need some extra help, if they need to talk through a
problem with their teacher when they are not at school, or they can create
their drawings and solve problems

Instructional Design
-This app effectively communicates its subject matter; it has a whiteboard
with tools both students and teachers can use to create a lesson or solve a
problem
-It has adaptive features that allow you to provide modifications and
accommodations for target students; you can personalize lessons
-You can make problems more challenging or simple depending on the needs
of your students
-Students can record themselves and share their solutions with teachers,
which allows them to provide feedback, assessment, and reflection
-This app was clearly designed to enhance math learning and guide students
to a better understanding of math concepts

Motivation
-Students will want to keep using the app when learning different math
concepts because it is interactive and keeps students engaged in the material

-Students will be motivated to work outside of the classroom since they will
have access to the lessons and problems as long as they are provided
appropriate technology to do so
-Builds on skill by allowing the teacher to make more challenging problems to
keep students motivated and engaged

Accessibility
-Numberkiz lessons can be created or changed to meet the needs of users
with differing skill levels-teachers can change problems or students can listen
to the lesson over again away from school
-Students can draw, write, record themselves, or listen to previous lessons to
communicate their learning

-Students can personalize their learning by choosing the best way for them to
show what they have learned and what is just out of reach for them as a
math learner

SAMR Model

Substitution
This app allows you to recreate math on the iPad.
Math becomes more appealing to children. No longer have to do math on paper with a pencil.
Students can draw shapes and numbers and make them come alive.
Fractions and Decimals
Angles
Addition and Subtraction
Area and Perimeter
The $9.99 full version includes tools that enhance the learning of math.
3D
Geoboard
Number rods, protractor, tangram, and ruler
This app can serve as a mobile notepad
There are videos for both the teacher and students to use as a resource to assist them in lessons and homework.

Augmentation
The technology is a substitute for a task, and offers some improvement.
Web Videos
Can record lectures and upload your own.
Can access the information outside of the classroom.
Students can respond by recording and uploading their answers.

These videos allow students to open Numberkiz and review sections of math they may need to review outside of school
(addition, subtraction, angles, decimals, fractions, multiplication, division, percent, polygons).
Rather than students needing to contact their teacher outside of school, they are able to look at the work that the
teacher showed in class, or refer to other videos that are available.
Students are able to measure lengths of different shapes as well as measure angles using the protractor function.
Students are also able to create their own grid sizes by increasing/decreasing the columns and rows in order to
show fractions (video)
There is a privacy setting and password for all videos that can be shared with classmates etc.

Modification and Redefinition

We believe that this app did not meet these
expectations because it only redefines how we
do math. It takes the place of paper and
pencils.

Do we recommend this App?!

YES!
Even though this app doesnt fit all of the requirements in the SAMR model, we feel that it is something everyone
should at least try. There are so many functions that this app allows you (as a teacher) to use!
