Toddlers Observed:

Carter (2)
Annaysha (2)
Aniyah (2)
Sam (3)

Gross & Fine Motor Skills:

Scribbles vigorously:
o Today the kids didnt color.
Jumps in place:
o For some reason today all of the children were crazy and hyped up so
they all were bouncing around and off the walls.
Walks on tiptoes:
o *Never noticed any of the kids walking on their tiptoes
Place one 2 block on another 2 block
o The class didnt do block play today.
Scribbles with large crayon on a large piece of paper:
o The class didnt do anything with coloring today.
Turns 2-3 pages in a large book while sitting in adults lap:
o The children arent allowed to read the large books by themselves and
none of this kids read books with teachers during the hour.
Holds pencil and makes marks on sheet of paper
o Didnt do any coloring today.
Builds a 4 block tower with 2 cube blocks
o Didnt play with blocks.
Additional Comments:
o For the hour I was at the center the toddlers played outside and for a little
bit and when they came inside they did hospital dramatic play. The
children had baby dolls and stethoscopes, blood pressure gauge,
thermometer and other doctor/nurse tools. When the children were
outside they rode their trikes around on the back pavement.

Draws an arc on a piece of unlined paper with a pencil being shown how:
o Didnt color or draw today.
Turns a doorknob that is within reach using both hands:
o When the children were coming in from playing outside the teacher let
Aniyah open the doorknob. She had a problem and it took her a few to get
it but eventually got the door open.
Additional Comments:
Cognitive Skills:
Ability to search for a hidden object:
o *No one did this during this hour.
Deferred imitation of an adults novel actions on objects after a long delay:
o When the children were outside riding their trikes, the wind blew one of
the trikes into the greenhouse and made a loud bang. The walls are plastic
so it didnt break anything however Annaysha got onto her trike and ran
it into the greenhouse to recreate the sound made before.
Engages in make-belief play:
o The children engaged in hospital play like I said above. Every one of the
children was engaged in this play and this seems to be really popular.
Says first recognizable word:
o All ten of the children were here today and I heard all of them talk and
speak sentences however I noticed that Annaysha is a little behind in her
vocabulary than the other kids. After asking the teachers helper about the
childrens vocabulary she openly stated that everyone was at the level
they were supposed to be except for Annaysha. She said that Annaysha
doesnt know many English words and that it might account for her
parents (the family is Indian) not speaking much English at home.
Combine 2 words:
o Like I said before all of the kids can speak and talk in sentences except for
Annaysha.
Sorts objects into categories:
o Didnt notice anyone sorting things.
Takes turn in games:
o There were only three stethoscopes for dramatic play and I saw children
taking turns listening to each others hearts with the stethoscopes.

Social and Emotional Skills:

Displays self-conscious emotions of shame, embarrassment, guilt and/or pride:
o Sam is completely shy and keeps away from me. Its probably just
stranger anxiety and I think that he will warm up to me sooner or later
since I will be here for a few weeks.
Can verbally name some feelings:
o I didnt really notice any kids telling others how they felt. When the kids
begin to yell and scream at one another the teachers tell them to use their
words and let the others know how theyre feeling. I quickly found out
that Aniyah in particular doesnt explain her feelings, instead she cries
about them until she gets what she wants. She had to be told multiple
times to use her words because instead of telling someone how she felt she
just screamed at them.
Displays empathy:
o *Didnt notice any of the kids showing empathy.
Joins in play with familiar others:
o Sam and Carter play together most of the time while Annaysha plays by
herself.
Complies with simple directions:
o Most of the children do what theyre told and with this age group you
normally see some resistance. Aniyah doesnt like being told what to do
and tends to start crying or screaming at the teacher when she is told to do
something.
Shows gender-stereotyped toy choices:
o The activities that went on when I got there didnt really have stereotype
choices.
Displays self-control:
o no. one. has. self. control. It might be because I am new here and they
arent used to having new people in their classrooms for long periods of
times.
