PRESS RELEASE

2014 Accountability Forum for CARMMA

Accra, 8 December, 2014: Regional Ministers and MMDCEs to account for
their leadership in reducing maternal mortality in their respective
constituencies.
An Accountability Forum on the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of
Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) will be held on Tuesday December 9,
2014 at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra. This forum is a platform at which
the President of Ghana HE John Dramani Mahama calls upon his Regional
Ministers and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to
account for their leadership in reducing maternal mortality in their respective
constituencies.
CARMMA is an initiative of the African Union that is aimed at curbing the high
numbers of pregnancy related deaths on the continent. The initiative is
designed to be nationally driven and owned. Launched in Ghana in 2009 by
former First Lady, Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills on the theme, No woman
should die giving life.
The CARMMA campaign strategy leverages on the strengths of the
Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in contributing to the
nations efforts in addressing the issues of maternal mortality. As part of the
campaign, 170 districts from the 10 regions in 2011 made specific
commitments which are expected to be achieved by 2015 to help reduce the
current numbers of maternal deaths in the districts, regions and the country
as a whole.
In this regard, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development with
support from the United Nations Population Fund are organizing the second
Accountability Forum, to assess the progress made in honouring pledges
made by Assemblies. These pledges range from training of midwives,
providing access to health infrastructure, procuring ambulances among
others.
The theme for this years forum is, No Woman Should Die Giving Life: Reaffirming the Commitment of Local Authorities.

The Ghana Government together with several stakeholders including the

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has put in several efforts to save the
lives of pregnant women in ensuring that a significant stride is made at
achieving the target set for Millennium Development Goal 5.
The UNFPA believes in delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted,
every child birth is safe and every young persons potential is fulfilled.
