Homelessness
More people should donate to homeless shelters. Homelessness has been a major
problem worldwide and its only getting worse. There are many homeless people on the streets
at night and have nowhere to go because the shelters are all full. I think people should donate
to homeless shelters for three reasons to keep homeless people off the streets at night, to help
homeless people build their life back up and to get more shelters built so they have more room.
If more people donated to a homeless shelter we could help out the homeless get their lives
back.
The first reason I think that people should donate to a homeless shelter is because it will
keep homeless people off the streets at night. Maria Foscarinis the executive director of
National Law Center on Homelessness says there has been a striking increase in city laws
prohibiting camping in parks, on sidewalks or in any public space. Donating to a homeless
shelter with help them with all the laws that are being passed against them. Brianna, a high
school student who was homeless did not know what to do so she slept under the bleachers at
her school until she found a shelter and she got help from the shelter. More than 124,000 or
one-fifth of the 610,000 homeless people across the USA suffer from a severe mental illness,
according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They cannot do anything
except for sleep on the streets or go to a shelter.

The second reason I think people should donate to a homeless shelter is so homeless
people can get their life back. It is tough for homeless people to get their life back on track but it
would be easier if they had help from their community. On a single night in January 2013
610,042 people were experiencing homelessness (NAEH, 1). There was a HEARTH act passed
in 2009 that helped the homeless. A shelter called Pinellas Hope in Clearwater, Florida has
been helping people get their life back on track for many years. They rely on donations to keep
their facility going and to be able to help people get their life back (Homeless not helpless, 2)

Kevin Lui, a homeless teen wrote about his time in a shelter and how they had an after school
program that helped Kevin with school so he could have a good education after high school.
The third reason more people should donate to a homeless shelter is so they can add on
to shelters to make more room. When you donate money to a shelter it goes to many things one
of those is expand the shelter and buy more beds so that people can stay there. Some shelters
have to turn people down because they are over filled (olsen,1). When shelters are overfilled it
can cause some people and families to take desperate measures like lying about their situation
or staying in abandon houses (Olsen, 1). According to the Pie chart the number of homeless
shelters has gone up but the number of people isnt as high as the doubled up and on the
streets because there isnt enough room for all of them.
More people should donate to homeless shelters. The three reasons people should
donate to homeless shelters so they can keep people off the streets, help people get back on
their feet, and so they can add to the shelters and get more beds. Donating to the homeless
could help out very much and more people need to start donating.
